Hey Stitch your lessons are great - thanks so much for sharing the knowledge. I think looking at this in terms of E mixo is kind of confusing things more than necessary. It's rock n roll (blues) with a key center of E to me - basic I -> IV cadence. Everything you are doing is spot on using E minor pent and E dorian - identifying tension notes vs. resolving chord tones. I just think we have to acknowledge the blues/rock thing with Dom7 chord as I chord as it's own thing - doesn't really fit in the diatonic modes world. Anyway thanks again for lots of thoughtful lessons.

That was a great lesson. The compaison to mixo was very obvious, too county-ish bluegrass. I actually learned dorian as my first scale because I was heavy into Blue Oyster Cult and Buck Dharma was a big user of dorian. I had to un-learn the dorian to play the blues, kept wanting to add in the other 2 notes..... As a side note I think you should have got the second guitar slot in Dead & Company instead of John Mayer!

I love Phish! I get the feeling that Trey didn't know the theory behind what he was doing. He just loves to jam and has an ear and style all his own. He feels it. It's something you can't just learn I don't think. You can learn to copy him yes but you can't learn to understand music in the ways he does. I dunno though. Like I said, I just get that feeling. I haven't actually seen anything to suggest that's what happens.

Stich -- this was an awesome lesson. And I'm not very familiar with Phish, and don't know this song at all. But I'll say it again: this was an awesome lesson. I'm stuck on one thing, though. I understand why E Mixolydian would be an obvious choice to solo over an E7 - A progression; the Parent Major Scale of E Mixolydian is A Major. And while I can certainly HEAR that E Dorian works over this progression, I'm not able to connect the dots as to why one would choose E Dorian for this progression. The Parent Major Scale of E Dorian is D Major. The E7 - A progression is certainly NOT in D. So I guess thinking about the Parent Major Scale is not the only way to choose an appropriate mode for soloing. I do know that the Mixolydian mode lowers the 7th (compared to Ionian), and the Dorian mode lowers the 7th and the 3rd, so the Dorian and Mixolydian are closely related. And I also know that Dorian is very close to Aeolian (it just raises the 6th), so I understand why Dorian is a common mode for a minor sound. I'm just not sure how one would arrive at the idea to use E Dorian for this progression. If I could understand that, I could apply it in other situations, with other progressions.
@StichMethodGuitar
@StichMethodGuitar 6 жыл бұрын
Kevin Ilsen did you watch my mixo Dorian video? Simply, where mixo can work, Dorian will give a “meaner” vibe because of the minor 3rd. It’s actually related to a blues type of mentality
@KevinIlsen
@KevinIlsen 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I watched that video. And I understand that it imparts a certain feeling, and I can HEAR that it works. I'm just trying to understand WHY -- by tying it back to the math.
@StichMethodGuitar
@StichMethodGuitar 6 жыл бұрын
Kevin Ilsen gotcha, remember, the blues influence of putting a minor scale on top of a major progression is the wrong thing to do, and this you can’t use the math with. It’s the concept itself that is “broken” in the rules of music
@KevinIlsen
@KevinIlsen 6 жыл бұрын
So . . . given that E Mixolydian would have been the "obvious" ("safe" ?) choice in this context, is the thought process: "Let's make it 'meaner' (ala the blues); let's take E Mixolydian as the starting point, and also flat the 3rd, which makes it E Dorian" ?
