In The Shadow of GREAT GABLE - A Wild Camping Adventure in the Mountains

I was joined on this trip by my friend Simon in his Duomid. My route allowed us to explore the north and western slopes of the magnificent Great Gable checking out Napes Needle, Sphinx Rock and Gable Crag before enjoying a well deserved wild swim in Sourmilk Gill.
Big thanks to Simon for getting some great video and drone footage, some of which I used in this video.
A 12 mile walk with 3500ft of ascent.

Gable climbers traverse is a great route, makes me more nervous every time (an age thing 😀). Really liked this format, a decent walk, great views, and an earned camp at the end.👍

Brilliant video. Great stuff Dave. Last summer I ventured along that traverse from the mountain rescue box, on my own. That sensible voice in my head told me to turn back as I quickly got out of my comfort zone. I would just like to get to Napes Needle once in my life, before I get too old to get up there! 😂

Brilliant video, one of the best you've done I think! The route was fantastic (way above my level) and I liked the way you filmed yourself and your friend on the side of the mountain from the drone. It's good to see you in places I am quite familiar with but doing a route I would never attempt.

Amazing footage as usual. Was the gully you found called Central Gully going up to Great Gable. Last time I walked Kirk Fell, I walked up the nose in extremely windy conditions, luckily I wasn’t camping. Keep up the good work Dave 👍

Great video, Dave. Drawback with new pump is that it does not currently have a USB connection for recharging from a powerbank for longer trips and can only get 3 pad inflations/deflation from it.

My Son and I have just come from there we camped in borrowdale, we have already done scafell pike broad crag and Ill crag, saturday 17 of september we did scafell pike again, we also did lords rake westwall traverse and endeding up in symmonds knott and scafell, taking the route down via foxes tarn and up mickledore back to seathwaite

@@TheSoloSummiteer Yeah we did, we walked up to styhead tarn and instead of going left we went down the valley across and up joining onto the corridor route, it took us 12.5 hrs to do everything, scafel pike was packed as per usual about 50-60 of them, 5 people up scafel really enjoyed it. I watched you go up lords rake and west wall traverse on your video and followed what you said about going up the right side more hand holds.

We were up Kirk Fell earlier this year, thought then that I'd have to go back and camp. Not sure about your route though - looked great - but too sketchy for me. Should have done when I was younger! I'm beginning to wonder if I'm the only one that Flextail hasn't sent that pump too! Great video again. ATB Roger

Smugglers path is the route you took around great gable to windy gap. I planned to do that route but the clag was bad so we opted for the path up windy gap which was tough scree and steep, you have to drop right down to get to the path before ascending back up loose scree. Tough.

The only time I did Kirk Fell was during a loop of Wasdale starting at Yewbarrow and ending on Scafell doing all the peaks in between. It must be the most epic circular day walk you can do in the Lakes

@@TheSoloSummiteer it’s epic I was very fit at the time but my legs totally went twice, first on the ascent of great end after great gable and again on the grassy slopes coming down off Sca Fell to the car park. Had to have an hour rest each time so the whole walk took 10 hours, just shy of 30km and 2,500m ascent. I dare you 😂

What a brilliant film Dave. That route looked so so difficult...spectacular but scary in places. You certainly don't do easy😂 Going across the scree and on to some of those ledges was heart in mouth stuff. You captured the atmosphere of this camp perfectly...tough but rewarding. Great welcome back film to our beloved Lakes. I will never be seeing that route 1st hand so can only thank you for showing a part of the Lakes we wouldn't ordinarily see. Thanks for sharing with us..brilliant stuff👍

Think I'll give that route a miss I really don't like crossing scree like that but the views are stunning.i camped on Kirk fell last year but went from Buttermere via black sail the weather got bad so tucked in behind the big rock near the tarn. then the clagg came and on my way back I went down to those tarns then back to Buttermere.

Brilliantly done Dave. The Duomid is a quality tent but it doesn’t seem to handle high winds any better tan my £160 Alpkit Tarpstar 1 which has no tie out guys. I’ve had that in 30 mph winds and it held up ok albeit flappy. Still mate you brought us a great adventure. Atb.

Cheers UP. The Duomid is great but struggles in 30mph+ winds on uneven ground if you can’t get the tension equal on all 4 corners. ATB pal 👍😎

Nice one, Kirk Fell is not the most spectacular mountain in itself but a really great high spot amongst the fells with great views in all directions, very peaceful too, I have climbed it a few times and never seen anyone else there
