Do you often wonder how to get from studies and work on location, to studio paintings? In this video I share some thoughts on that , sharing aspects of a new body of work about the wonderfully sensory summer garden.
Although the process isn't a linear one and therefore there is no clever formula, I think that is one major advantage. There is so much fun, learning and unpredictability, this is what makes it exciting! We first of all have to get used to not knowing the end result!
The prework on location as well as several of the early paintings I share were created as part of an Emily Ball online course. You can find out more about Emily's teaching here: emilyballatseawhite.co.uk

Enjoyed that very much Liz, thank you. It's always interesting to see how you move through the various stages, from inspiration to early studies to beginning your paintings. Love the colour palette too!

Thank you so much Jillayne, I am so glad it was helpful. I always find the colours in the summer garden rather gorgeous so I am trying to reflect them here. I usually use a more limited colour palette so will see whether I end up with different and more minimal palettes in some. Time will tell. It's early days!

Interesting. I have been drawing my own garden and intend to draw at the allotments. Drawing foliage is quite challenging, but worth the effort. Also, adding watercolour is interesting. I like the paintings you've done.

Hello thank you for your comments . Great that you’ve been drawing your own garden and allotments. It’s a brilliant way of connecting with those spaces and what’s important to you. I think for me I’m just trying to reflect the essence feel of the foliage rather than it literally - that can make it easier or at least more manageable.

So exciting to see this process Liz, by coincidence I've been working on a similar idea of extending a small stuck on sketch into a larger piece, although my pieces are representational studies of a local harbour and beach

Hello Lois I’m glad you enjoyed the video. It’s good to shake things up a bit isn’t it? Interesting that you’ve been doing something similar - I really enjoy it as a technique. And I think there’s a lot more to be got from them back in the studio. Happy painting and drawing!
