The point of drilling more holes is that the prefilter sponges are used more evenly, so the flowrate stands more stable over a longer period of time even when it’s starts clogging

Yes drill more holes in it. No, don’t make them bigger to increase flow, cus it wont increase flow. Instead what this does is allows water in through the pre filter at the same rate out the outlet. This resolves the constant choking of the Oase filter. No more burps or bubbles :)

As it happens, I set up a BioMaster 350 on a 40 gallon breeder just last night. For my purposes, the flow is excellent. Even with the spray bar set one inch below the water line, it agitates the surface well. And the filter itself is silent as a stone. But I think you were right in your first video: if you want higher flow, you have to go with the 600 or 850 model (or with a different make). I don't think there's any pimping the piping or tubing to raise flow. And I personally cut the manufacturer's reported flow rate by half.

Thanks for sharing these results. I still prefer oase filters for the built in heater and easier maintenance on account of the prefilter sponge. Considering the heater is included in the price they are a great value in my opinion. I'm using a 250 on a 20g long and the flow seems fine to me. For future tanks I'll just use an oversized oase canister or double up on them. I am tempted to try a super jet one day but sucks to lose the heater in the filter and I prefer to avoid submersibles.

Oase is def my top go to for filters. I use the off brand superjet from Fzone lol. Maintenance is a bit annoying without trays but pump adjustment and other things makes up for it. It all comes down to personal preference.

I used to promote the idea of drilling more/bigger holes until I spoke to an Oase rep, the pipe as it comes is suitably drilled for the pump head. Adding more holes will make no difference as the pump and media is the restriction. If you want more flow upgrade the head.

@slinkyscapes8530
@slinkyscapes8530 3 жыл бұрын
@@chrisrabatin625 the heads are interchangeable as the diameters are the same between the 250,350 and 600. You can put the 600 head on a 250 canister or if you wanted less flow you can reverse. One of the only things you would have to keep is the prefilter from the smaller sized canister as it’s the depth that changes in an extra tray as you go up/down in size. The only one I’m not sure is the new 850 as I’ve not seen one to measure it but I’d assume the footprint is the same as the rest in the series. Obviously you may be hindered by heater depth too so you’d have to look up lengths on Oase’s website www.Oase.com

I think if you get off completly the pipe you take the maximum possibilities to upgrade the flow. If test this and didn't increased the flow this means that the flow reduction comes from and other spot of filter and no needs to experiment with the pipe. Good job keep like this 👍👍👍

Guess I could be way wrong about this but my opinion on canister filters or any type of aquarium filter is the amount of media it will hold is the key to good water quality. I don't want a whole lot of turbulence in my tank no matter what's in there . I do want a lot of media for the water to pass through . what I believe is the longer the water is interacting with whatever media you are using the better filtering you are going to get. Like I said I could be way wrong but I have had fish since I was twelve years old and I still have fish at 74 . Remember blowing water through whatever you use in your filter does not mean quality water coming out.

I purchased the Biomaster 350 last December for my 90 gallon. Love the design and construction, but disappointed with the dismal flow rate. I have a Marineland 360 on my 55 gallon and it has a more powerful flow rate and cost 1/2 the price of the Oase. I have taken down the Oase and replaced it with a SunSun 304b, which costed me 1/3 the price of the Oase. I do not known the long-term durability of the SunSun, but I can honestly say it’s powerful, easy to setup & prime. I purchased a 2nd SunSun 304b as a backup since it was so inexpensive.

Basic fluid dynamics, only so much water can flow through a given diameter. Unless you change the size of every orifice in the water path you are not going to increase the volume of water that can pass through the smallest opening it the water path. you could remove the pre filter tube and it will not increase the gph. Most videos on this topic are wrong. You can reduce the flow with a restriction, like when you hold your finger over the end of a hose, the water will shoot farther but the flow rate will be reduced. You might be able to increase gph if you could install a different impeller (probably can't) and I am assuming the openings throughout the filter are matched to the max flow capabilities of the motor.

I went the 250 route for my 40 gallon breeder and the agitation is okay but flow is horrible. I hear you can just swap the head unit from a bigger model to get the rate you want, but not recomended. Idk I may just upgrade and use the 250 on my daughters 10gallon tank or something. I would like to add the frustrating part is when I see particles go near the inlet and pass by it. definitely go 600 or better.

I also ordered the pipe again in case something goes wrong and drilled more holes...also what made a little difference was going for the more course filter sponge you put onto the prefilter unit, the orange ones. I didnt measure it but the outflow was better in my opinion...though it didnt have a big impact overall but that little helped. I run it on a custom made tank with nearly 200L and its enough...but i didnt want a strong flow so thats fine. What irritates me the most is the big rain pipe...with one pipe the flow is fine if i add the second water barely comes out of it which just feels weird if Oase tested it and thought thats enough. Its not! Dont include the second rainpipe cause its useless lol an it still feels weird that you have to make some changes to a Filter you buy to make it...better. A company should have enough experience to correct minor issues like this before they release it, or at least sell new Filters with this in mind and make those changes that just help the filter in general. somehow it feels like companies never look at feedback of their products as they have thjeir own youtubers they send it too and most of them just praise a product no matter what...or ofc they go for 2 Filters for a setup which is pretty pricy and not everyone does that.

Interesting - thanks for the tests. Just bear in mind that "head height" significantly changes the efficiency of a pump. The manufacturer's rating will be with no media and the pump at the same level as the inlet/outlet to the tank. For future testing, you should stick to the zero head height for standardization purposes. People are always cynical about manufacturers, but to be fair they have to practice standardization in their testing conditions, and given that everyone's setup is going to be different, what better level to use than zero as the standard? On a related point, head height and flow rate are never a fixed relationship when comparing different pumps. You can get pumps that can create humungous amounts of flow but have a terrible head height rating - and vice-versa. Cheers from South Africa.

The Pond Guru/Pimp My Filter video that people referred you to doesn't actually mention any flow rates, nor perform any tests or cite any research or even personal experience to suggest one will achieve A higher flow rate with his modifications. He just said the standard pipe was too restrictive & he could improve that so he changed it. That does make sense as you mentioned. He actually never tests or claims to have tested the flow rate prior to or after his modification. Nor does he provide us with any data to suggest any improvement in flow or suction was achieved he states it as fact. For all we know, based on his video, there may not have been any change in the GPH at all after his modification but only the assumption of improved flow rate based on said modification. It would appear your own testing bears this out. I have nothing against the Pond Guru & his videos have helped me personally improve my filtration systems over the years. I understand his logic, but I'm not convinced his modification of the prefilter pipe in this filter is as valuable as people think it. Once again, your actual test bears this out.

If so of course the flow will go way down.. the filter was designed like it was for a reason .. your not going get more flow by running a large pipe restricted into a smaller one .. anyways water turnover into a filter is way overrated .. you should be buying a filter rated 2 times the size the company suggest imo just for.the filter capacity I use bottom tray sponge 3 trays of matrix and then carbon and use 2 nano Nero's in the tank .. this is coming from someone that runs a med to heavy stocked 29 gallon reef tank with a biomaster 600 and 10% water changes every week basically what I get out from cleaning my sand .if I was running something like 100 gallon I be using something like a biomaster 850 maybe even 2.. for saltwater tank owners if you can't do weeky maintenance you shouldn't be in the hobby .. when I go on vacation for more then a week I pay a maintenance service to come over ..to many people just want something with no effort .. it be like owning a dog and not taking it for walks daily it's plain abuse simple as that .

I run 2 Biomaster 250’s on my 50 gal freashwater. One is strictly filtering and the second is set up with bcb bags

If you put a larger pipe in the pre-filter, or drill holes in the factory one, It’s like changing a 2 lane highway to 2.2 lanes for 1 mile on a 10 mile highway. The majority of the road is the same.
