Physical Therapist Margaret Martin demonstrates chair squats for seniors. When I say "seniors" I mean anyone over the age of 55 (I don't mean to offend anyone). I find that I have clients who have lost considerable strength by the age of 50 and 55 because they have not been strength training on a regular basis. I also encourage everyone to practice this exercise early in life because as time passes, you will lose the strength you need to function in life.
Chair squats is a functional exercise, meaning that it is an exercise you use on a routine and daily basis. You squat when you get in and out of the chair, when you visit the toilet, when you squat down to reach into your cupboard, and many other instance.
In this video, I show how to gradually build up your chair squat using a real chair!

In today's video I demonstrate how to do the chair squat. This exercise is very appropriate for seniors and those of us over 50 years of age. Give it a try.

Hello Ms. Martin. I like your video. I got into fitness at a very early age. I keep my body from breaking down by exercising. If I didn't exercise through out the years I wouldn't be able to move at all. I am 56 years old. I believe in doing all of those moves that you're showing. They do help a lot. Thank you for your service. I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos. Enjoy your day.

this is so useful to me since my injury's. I quit physical therapy because they wanted me to skip all the steps and just get up and down. It caused me too much pain. You have the answer in your sequence.

Thank you, Margaret, for the great video ! Such progressions are key for many of us & I appreciate you advising. Any suggestions for a 94 yo with a debilitating left arthritic knee ? When trying to use good form in sit to stands, it seems to aggravate the knee even more. Told only solution is knee replacement which obviously not a candidate for ? Thank you !

Thank you. I would suggest that one would need to ensure a solid heavy chair with armrests, some dining captain chairs and even those light sling wheelchairs are tippy. Great ideas , and I certainly need to work on this starting today.

Thank you Margaret! Very good discussion and instruction regarding real life functional movement and chair squats to improve strength and confidence. One question, do you also agree that there is value for the knees not to extend past the toes when standing/performing a chair squat?

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on the chair squat. Your question brings up a good point. With any squat your knees will certainly have less strain (wear and tear internally) if you do not extend past the toes. Having said that, I find that many people forget we are talking about the knee joint and not the kneecap. This gives most people a grace of about 3/4 of an inch or 2 cm of the external part of the knee (tip of the knee cap) going over the second toe. All the best, Margaret

Hi Margaret, I have just started to watch your video on osteoporosis and i subscribed to your channel, but i cant find the notification button. Also, what is the title of your book? Thank you so much. I have quite advanced osteoporosis and cant take the medicines and therefore I want to try to help myself through exercises to avoid a fracture as much as I can.

How many times do you recommend standing and sitting in a row and how frequently during the day should I do them to notice an improvement in my leg strength? I just did 10 in a row and felt the burn. Am I supposed to push through the burn or stop? Thank you!
