Ihis video we are going over how to create bat lag and how to release it through the zone. We are going to go over the key checkpoint positions that all of the best hitters get into. You'll learn that the tip of the bat is supposed to stay inside the hands just before the release of the bat.
We will also learn the sequence of that leg which consist of: creation of bat la,g release and full release. And we will discuss how contact comes into play with ideal contacted being just before the full release of the bat.
The full release starts when the hands begin to roll over and contact is made just before. We will then go over the pole drill which will teach you how to keep the tip of the bat inside the hands and allow you to undoubtedly feel the creation of bat lag and snap through the zone.
I look forward to helping you improve your baseball in the future!

Michael Derr

One of my favorites! Once my lil 7 year old understood the concept of Bat Lag (which I hate that term because it implies slow/left behind) he went from hard grounders to Crushing line drives in the gap! Thanks again Michael.

Hands to the ball creates ground ball, bat lag is created from bat behind shoulder and as the shoulder turn the bat comes whupping through. The kinetic sequence is hips, torso, shoulders, then the bat comes through.

I know that if I am hitting it to the right that means that i am hitting the inside of the ball or I am super early where it is hitting off the top of the bat. Once again great video! What drill would you recommend for my son who tips his bat head upon his load? I video him all the time and noticed him tipping his bat head,I noticed his back elbow lifting slightly causing it. Just my opinion here but sometimes I think there’s to much information out there. It can become confusing,which is why I enjoy watching your videos,they way you simplify things makes it much easier to follow. I’m not gonna name names but there’s videos on KZfaq claiming T-Drills,soft toss,pitching machine drills only create bad habits! I’d love to hear what you have to say about this, Thanks again PSB!!

Great video, and I agree that bat lag is an enormous source of power for good hitters, but there was one thing in the video that I am not sure is correct. When you were demonstrating that drill, you say the bat should be PRESSED up against that column. I agree that that drill will help hitters mimic the correct swing, but I am not sure I agree that hitters should be pressing the bat HARD up against that column. In my opinion, if the bat head stays back, just as you demonstrated, the bat head will eventually snap forward, not because of some aggressive push by the hands, but rather because of the centrifugal force created by the hips. Maybe I am wrong, and if anyone wants to disagree with me, I would be happy to listen.
@ProSpeedBaseball
@ProSpeedBaseball 7 жыл бұрын
Hey William, thanks for the comment! The "pressing" mentioned during the drill portion of the video is simply for the drill. You are correct in that a hitter shouldn't do this during a normal swing. (Which I probably could've done a little better job explaining in the video...) This drill is designed for hitters to drastically feel the difference of where the bat head should be in the transition of the swing. And yes, you are spot on that the bat head will snap forward if lagged behind the hands correctly due to the force applied by the hands. (The hips relate to this, just not directly. The separation between the hips and torso will allow the hands to move with more force, therefore affecting the speed of hands and eventually the "snap" of the bat) Nice eye! ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball

Michael! I need your help sir! I understand you should have loose hands, when one is at the Contact position (Power L) should your hands still be loose and "whip" the ball? Or Again at point of contact (Power L) should one grip the bat TIGHT? Flexion in your forearms? Just to be clear, I'm taking about the stage in the swing where you just came out of bat lag,the ball just met the bat. Thank you in advance, I am a subscriber and Love your videos!

Hey George, thanks for the question! A good rule of thumb is to always feel relaxed hands... Your hands will naturally tighten up at impact enough to hang on to the bat... if they don't tighten up then the bat will be thrown. I would most likely never recommend to tighten the hands at any point in the swing. Just keep the hands relaxed and let your natural tendency to hold on to the bat work for you!l The idea is to be relaxed, not so loose you can't control the bat. Hope this help out! ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball

Hey Michael, I'm having a problem with my feet because I don't move them when batting, any excercises that I can use to make me Move my feet when hitting
@ProSpeedBaseball
@ProSpeedBaseball 9 жыл бұрын
techwiz02 Hey techwiz02, thanks for the question! I've seen it a lot when hitters have inactive feet, I would highly suggest taking dry swings, where you don't hit any balls, and really focus on letting your feet work during your swing. One of the best things you can do for your lower half is to hold your finish at the end of the follow through. While holding look down at your feet and make the corrections. If your front let is bent, straighten it, and if your back foot hasn't rotated, rotate it! Then on every swing try to get it to where you don't have to make any corrections. Once you've done that without hitting balls, the next step would be to get on a tee and repeat the same drill while hitting balls. Hope this helps, if you have any other questions don't hesitate to let me know! Good Luck! ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball

When I attempt this drill...my wrist on my upper hand around the thumb area starts to hurt . Any reason to why this is happening?
@ProSpeedBaseball
@ProSpeedBaseball 9 жыл бұрын
Could be the setup or trying to hold the bat lag position too long. If you refer to the very last demonstration in the video, the hold on the pole is only for a brief moment. So when you begin to put pressure on the barrel (sweet spot on the pole) your hands are moving forward and the bat shouldn't stay on the pole for too long. Also check your setup, and make sure the pole is behind your hands and not behind your shoulders. Let me know if this helped, and if there's anything else I can do for you!! ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball

I find when i throw my hands at at the ball, the barrel of the bat is touching my back arm before whipping through. Is this ok?
@ProSpeedBaseball
@ProSpeedBaseball 8 жыл бұрын
+pakzi Sounds like way too much bat lag. Sounds like you're on the right track, just might be holding the bat too loosely with your grip. This would be the only way the bat could touch your back arm in the through swing. Without physically seeing your swing, it would be tough to tell, but that what it sounds like. If you have any more questions on this or anything else, just let us know! ~Michael Pro Speed Basebll

Hey Michael. I have a question about getting your back elbow into the slot position. I've been having trouble with it, and it seems like I have anti-bat drag (if you will). My elbow doesn't want to tuck into the slot until I'm almost making contact. I'm having trouble starting my swing with my back elbow. Any exercises you recommend?
@ProSpeedBaseball
@ProSpeedBaseball 9 жыл бұрын
iSirAmGreen Hey, thanks for the comment! The best way to work on something you're struggling with is to work into it starting in slow motion and slowly working to full speed. Work on the pole drill in this video and make sure your setup is correct. Also, I would take the focus off of the back elbow and concentrate on swinging with your hands. Do the drill starting out really slow making sure you are in the correct positions and slowly work up to full speed of the drill. (*full speed in this drill is demonstrated in the video, won't be as fast as your normal swing)This will help you get the correct muscle memory. When you switch to thinking of your hands swinging properly your elbow will naturally be in the right place.Let me know how this works for you and if you have any other questions!! ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball
@bruhwhat12345
@bruhwhat12345 9 жыл бұрын
Pro Speed Baseball Hey Michael! Thanks for the tip. It's really helped me get my elbow in that slot in a timely matter. But I have a couple other issues. Do you have any drills for making sure you hit the ball on the sweet spot? I've been looking at film and I've been hitting the ball off the end of the bat. Another is bat path. My bat path isn't good. I'm making contact while my bat is still in a downward motion. Any tips on that too? Thanks, Michael!
@ProSpeedBaseball
@ProSpeedBaseball 9 жыл бұрын
iSirAmGreen You're very welcome!! The best possible thing you can do if you're struggling with finding the sweet spot is to hit as much as you can off of a tee. This gives you the best repetition in gaining what I like to call "Sweet Spot Awareness." However, it is crucial that your setup is correct when practicing off of a tee. (You can check out this video to help you get into the Perfect Tee Setup: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gL6DqcKZp7TSoKc.html ) Once you start nailing the "sweet spot" every time, then mix it up on yourself on the tee. Hit inside, outside, low, high etc. until you have really good sweet-spot awareness. Without actually seeing your swing, it's tough to give you something exact to work on for bat path and making contact on the downswing. I would suggest doing the drills in the "Stay Inside the Ball" video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qqejiLSZ3aibdpc.html These type of drills done off of the tee with the right setup will help immensely with creating the perfect swing path to the baseball. By executing the drills properly (without cheating of course!) you will have to naturally swing correctly to hit the ball in the right places. Let me know if you have any other questions or if there's anything else I can help with. Good Luck!! ~ Michael Pro Speed Baseball

+JCFILMS Hey JCFILMS, I think there might be some sort of miscommunication with the word "doll." Not quite sure what you're referring to. However, I will say if you are experiencing pain, the drill is either being performed incorrectly or something is wrong. I would suggest to see a specialist. If you are doing the drill, I would suggest to be a little more relaxed and do the drill slower to just get the overall motion! Hope this helps! ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball

JCFILMS I would suggest making sure you're gripping the bat correctly in a door knocker over door knocker position, very similar to how you would hold a hammer or axe. If the bat is laying in your palm and in-between your thumb and fore finger, this could cause some issue. The bat should be in your fingers. What an *_outstanding_* video, Michael ... thank you so much!! 😎 Quick question. Do you consciously control the "lag," or does it simply happen due to the stride (_i_._e_., weight shift from back foot to front foot)? I grip the bat quite loosely, but it doesn't seem to be an "automatic" occurrence (unlike a tennis serve, where the racquet drop arises from the lower body's kinetic chain and torquing). If this is more of a conscious movement, and referencing your whip analogy, do you consciously "bob" the bat head in the opposite direction to the lag, before going into the lag (if that makes _any_ sense ... *LOL*)?? Can you please shed some insight about this aspect? Many thanks, and love your pittie (we recently had to put ours down 😢)!
@rslwannabe9475

It just happens. It's like the chain on a bike moving since you push the pedals, you dont control the chain but it still works. As long as you do everything else right with your body it'll just happen. Getting the barrel to work correctly is something you may or may not have to train. After it works correctly lag will just happen though.

KG L Hi KG L! Thanks for the comment!! This video is simply about what bat lag is and how it works. We can effectively use our hands properly, or on the "inside path" of the batt by creating bat lag properly. I would highly recommend checking out the "How to Stay Inside the Baseball Video" for a specific explanation, followed up by the "Derek Jeter Drill" video which will give an awesome drill to help with casting! Good Luck! ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball
