I was on a Zoom chat with Tony and Layne and the subject of this video came up. Tony let us know things about the mask that we hadn’t known. Although there are some commercially available masks, ones used for performances are always custom made. They have straps holding them in place, but the mask itself doesn’t touch any part of the actor’s face. That way the actor can be fully expressive. They are designed for a one-time use, although with care they can be used a couple times. The mask for this was custom made for Tony.

I chuckle every time I watch the outro when Tony says indulging the theatrics is a "departure" for them, lol! Now it is what they are know for :D

I don't care how many times I've seen this, I get chills ever. Single. Time! Just the passion Tony has when he yells "Sing for me!" melts me to the core. Then they all disappear... I'm glad you reacted to this!

This was one of the first few voiceplay videos I ever watched and it was the one that made me realise just how insanely good Layne is at percussion. He was so good in this!

This is such a hidden gem from VoicePlay! It falls under the radar of so many reactors, even those who know VoicePlay pretty well. And the outro from Tony speaks volumes about "the theater kids of a cappella", as this was apparently one of the first (if not THE first) time where they went for a more theatrical version of the video.

As the first really theatrical endeavor by Voiceplay, this is very impressive.

Thanks for your reaction! Yes, Rachel and Tony are wonderful in this one. Yes, Tony is still very much a part of the Voice Play family since he stepped down as their baritone singer to focus more on their production and day to day operation of PattyCake Productions. I really do miss him and Rachel and would like to see more new guest appearances from both of them. By the way, Tony made the dress that Rachel is wearing here. I think you would enjoy seeing more of Tony in "Road Trip" and "A Crimpella".

Yes Tony is involved in Pattycake now. Layne arranged this if I recall... he said in an interview with Peter Barber that it's always a risk to try something different with such a well known/loved song... and this one specifically divided people, but he said it's path of the course. Rachel very much phenomenal here yes! 🌹🕊

Phantom was the first Broadway musical soundtrack I ever heard, sang from, and saw (at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta). And it remains my favorite.

That is the most amazing theater! I took a tour of it several years ago.

Also, Tony was incognito in the Hellfire video as the Walk-in. So Hellfire technically had 4 of Vp’s past & present Baritones in it. 😊 He also filmed last year’s Christmas video with his iphone and helped choreograph their dance.

Oh, this one is so good! Have you read the original POTO book? I was lucky enough to see Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman onstage in Phantom. So I'm bit of a snob about it. Full disclosure, this was the first video by Voiceplay I ever saw, and I didn't watch much. Because I'm a Phan snob, and didn't understand it was A cappella. But when I saw more of their stuff and went backed and watched it, I loved it. Still do! Lots of Tony in it, which is great. And it was their first "theatrical" video, and look where it took them!

Oh, to any Phantom Phans out there, especially (but not limited to) people who have read the original book, I would like to recommend a book to you. It is my second favorite book. It's called "Phantom" by Susan Kay. See, I have ADD, so generally cannot reread a book unless it's been about ten years. But I reread "Phantom" and my favorite book ("Watchers," by Dean Koontz) every couple years. "Phantom" is the story of the life of the Phantom, from different viewpoints, starting with his mother. It's fascinating, and is SO good, and such an homage!

Yes it's Tony Wakim. He can be seen in older videos, you can tell him by the twinkly eyes. :) And yes he left VP to join Layne doing Pattycake Productions.

This kind of missed the mark for me. Rachel's vocals were great, but it felt like the rest of the group was stepping on her aria at the end, and that knocked the whole thing down a peg. The version by Floor Jansen and Henk Poort from the 2019 season of Beste Zangers had a lot more impact for me.
