My village of Fagasa, in Tutuila, does the same thing during our “Atule” season. Basically when the “Atule” are in the reef we do exactly what these folks here are doing and we round the fish up in palm leaf woven baskets, where they’re taken to the beach to be distributed amongst the village. And if we’re lucky we’ll see dolphins just before the season. As legend goes, the dolphins bring fish to feed “Sina”. The dolphins were once human - a royal fishing party had made its way from Upolu to our village to rest. However, Sina got left behind as royal fishing party and her father set back out to sea having forgotten her. Upon the discovery that his daughter was left behind, he ordered the ship to return to the village. But a nasty storm was right in the way and sunk the vessel, and everyone on board would’ve drowned if a sea goddess did not take pity on them all. And so, sometimes in the early mornings of the days just before the “Atule” season, the dolphins (the ancient fishing party and Sina’s father) bring fish to feed and nourish Sina and her descendants. That’s why our village’s official mascot is a dolphin, and that’s why the honorary title for “Maiden of Fagasa” or taupou is “Sina” (meaning any virgin girl of chiefly lineage bestowed the title would be called Sina).

@@uniuser1797 it's a known fact that people who live hunter gatherer lifestyles have way less depression cases, due to the fact that all they do is hunt and gather, which directly affects them in a way that means life or death. On the other hand, in America, people work nine to five jobs stacking boxes, sitting in a cubicle doing nothing they are remotely interested in. Therefore they are more likely to be depressed

The way they do with is incredibly smart. making a small, pen like structure out of rock, then using massive vines to herd fish in, then they easily take what they need.

In remote village & districts in Fiji 🇫🇯 e.g. Ravitaki, this traditional method of fishing together is still practiced, a dying art. It's called YAVI RAU, which translates Reeling Vine. Usually involves the fishermen tribe i.e. Gonedau. When enclosing the fishes in we use a special type of root called Duva to knock the fishes out so they float to the surface asleep
