as someone who studied metallurgy, your right about the kin-pin. the nut is mild steel so more soft and the kingpin is high carbon steel so more hard. so yes the kingpin will slip faster when against other metals but will be like an anchor against Concrete. where the nut will be softer and feel more like wax against Concrete but could be more sticky when sliding against other metals.

@PHeMoX
@PHeMoX 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah so true. I keep switching different board sizes, wheels and trucks a bunch lately. And it's pretty much hurting my learning to skate. It's crazy how much it matters to go from 8.0" board to 8.25" and switch from Venture or Tensor to Thunder 148. At the same time, I kind of like to experiment and try what works best anyway. But I do think I should stick with a 8.25" for a bit, to really learn to skate better.

@@PHeMoX I only started skating again back in the spring after years of not skating. I've been working my way up the board sizes on Mini Logo decks with Independent trucks. Started out with an 8" deck, then, 8.25", and now I got a 8.5" but, haven't yet tried it. I used to skate back in the 80s when decks were more like 10". I like the 8.25" better than the 8". I'll see how I like the 8.5". That's probably where I will stop. I like the Mini Logo decks. Once I find the sweet spot, I want to standardize on that. I'm thinking maybe 8.5" will be it. Before I got the 8" deck, I had an Element deck from years ago that was a 7.75". I don't see what the point of small decks like that are. I'm glad there is a trend of board sizes getting bigger again. I'm old though and hence am not that into or worried about doing a lot of flip tricks. As long as the bigger deck doesn't suck at staight up ollies, I'd rather have the bigger one. I used to be able to clear 5 boards interlocked on a 10" board back in the day. So, I guess it should work. If my ollies suck now, it won't be because of the board. It will be because my borderline obese ass is out of shape.

When I started skating in the late 80s I guess, we used to always invert the kingpins ourselves. Back in those days the kingpins were just like a normal bolt with a hex-shaped head which was the bit that locked into the baseplate. Seemed to work great, but the bottom of the bolt did extend past the bottom of the baseplate and would gouge into the board somewhat, and probably caused my boards to crack because they used to crack a lot.
@raymondzzzzz

I usually cruise for a hour or so to get the bushings broke in and then I tighten to my liking. I feel if you crank down the tightness, the bushings crack prematurely (for those who want trucks to last).

Thanks for review Ben !was expecting good clearance from kingpin is'nt this why everyone is so hyped about them? Going to give em a miss stick with 144 hollows .I have fitted old grind king kingpins which work well and give proper clearance only snag is you have to jam nut in baseplate with metal and superglue . Can't understand why indy haven't thought this through with the kingpin clearance maybe could have got rid of washer and incorporated it in kingpin.

Independent said in their review video that they use the same amount of material in the mid's hangers and the highs. The extra weight actually comes from a steel kingpin mount in the base plate. That being said, you shouldn't notice too much extra weight because it is being kept close to your feet.

I have a question for you, have you ever had the chance to ride Fury Trucks? I used to skate them back in late 90s, as an alternative to my Venture, I also had Arto Saari Fury Pro model in 2005. I prefer riding Independent these days, but I have recently found on an old box some of my old Fury Trucks, I used to like them, but these days I find them very Weird and too super light. Leave it to indy to come up with a inverted kingpin that has less clearance than a regular one XD dont know why they didnt use the KRUX one..
@bendegros
@bendegros 3 жыл бұрын
It's not that the kingpin has less clearance. It's just the lower hanger.

I'm probably going to get the 159 mids and put the Kreeper kingpin on them. It's the lowest kingpin I've ever used and I have two brand new sets just chillin in my random parts. It looks like there's almost an inch of grind clearance on my 169s with those on them.

Did you have the chance to try the inverted kingpin on the standatd height indys? Did they perform better in smith grinds like you supposed or the regular nut is still the way to go for smiths on indys?

Hahahah Ben, I had been watching this episode in the evening and had the weirdest dream last night . You came here overseas to promote some fragrance for skateboarders that smells like maple wood hahaha. I was touring skateparks with you in my home town and filming with a Sony vx800 (a model that doesn't exist hahah) and you were skating and giving away that perfume hahaha That's weird seriously but maybe that perfume might be a good business idea . Maple fragrance...hmmm hahahah. All the best!
