These are excerpts from National Geographic's "The Great Indian Railway"(1995), probably the best documentary ever on the Indian Railways.
As a young boy, I used to travel to Grandma's place by the Howrah Mail from Madras. In 1989, on one such trip, My dad pointed out to a gigantic engine puffing smoke in the shed at Madras central as our train was leaving and said: "Manu, look, that's a steam engine". I forgot about steam engines later.
In 1999(10 years later), I watched the National Geographic's special screening of this documentary on TV. I remembered my encounter with the puffing beasts in 1989. I couldn't stop crying by the end of this documentary.
Starting in the early 80's the Steam engines of the Indian Railways have been slowly phased out of all the main lines in favor of Electric and Diesel locomotives due to economic pressures. By the turn of the 90's, it had become a rare sight to see a Steam-driven train.
You can buy the DVD or VHS of this 115 minute documentary on nationalgeographic.com. It costs $15 including US local postage.

Anyone in 2020? Binoy are you still around? Watched this documentary in 1996 in national geographic, at the age of 10 in the morning at 7:30 am just before leaving for school. How much India has changed and so has life. God willing.

Makes me sad to see steam dying down. I'm 23, and feel very lucky to have grown up with steam in America. Even though I rarely see steam on the main line, there are always tourist railroads that operate steam, and many are working hard to bring steam back to life. Both America and England are trying to keep history alive for the future by restoring steam to make sure we never ever officially run out of steam.

@Chris9017 Thanks for your reply. The steam preservation movement in India is already gaining much required impetus. Long defunct steam shed was restored several years back and now, it is the only operating steam shed for steam locomotives in India at present. It houses several steam engines from broad gauge (5' 6") and meter gauge (3 ft 3 3⁄8 inch). Also, a broad gauge Bayer Garrett was restored some four years back. It is good to know that you work on a steam locomotive on weekends.

@resist4resist There are many steam engines in America, and England that still operate on tourist railroads. You just need to do your homework and find look for locations that have them. I work on a steam train on weekends in California, and it's a wonderful experience.

@resist4resist No problem. I'm glad that preservation is happening in India too. America has lots of steam. The engine I am restoring with the Pacific Locomotive Association in California is a 2-6-6-2 Baldwin logging Mallet, kinda like a small Big Boy. I do restoration work on Saturday, and Sundays I'm a hostler or what you would call assistant fireman on a little tank engine, and I grease the moving parts, sand out the boiler, give the engine her oil and fill her up with water.

Binoy, I completely agree with the opening phrase of the video. I belong to that group of "boys", who never thought of steam engines as they were being gradually phased out. It took several years, before the remorse set in. All we can see now are plinthed steam locomotives at various stations, branch and head offices of IR put on for public display like the mummified bodies of Egyptian pharaohs of antiquity. Take your diesels and electrics away...and give me back my steaming beauties!!!

How many of the steam locomotive shown in the film were preserved later, same with some of the loco sheds, are there any left
@cyruslovesindia
@cyruslovesindia 4 жыл бұрын
Most are scrapped. Hardly any operational steam locomotives left in India. Probably less than 10. Compare that with UK which has over 700 plus working steam locomotives. Never sat in a steam locomotive train in India but sat twice in a steam engine train in the UK. It's a Beautiful feeling.

@@AusLegoBoy funding is an issue and rich business houses will not come forward for these old locos. Railways in India is fully government owned Steam locomotives are definitely not a priority in India. Railways in India is modernizing very fast. Most metre and narrow gauge railway have been converted to broad gauge. The Darjeeling line is still steam chugging the length of its route on narrow gauge and because it's a UN heritage listed rail it's preservation is important. Other than that fairy Queen one of the oldest steam locomotives in the world in working order does some weekly excursions. Overall I don't think more than 10 operational steam locomotives would be there in India. Even diesel locomotives are slowly being changed to hybrid locos and newer models will only be electric locomotives.
