I really feel sad about TUMBAAD........A movie which took more than 5 years for shooting , A movie that really kept you hooked till the end was a disaster at the box office....Then it was rejected for Oscar Nominations.....Still many haven't watched this masterpiece... Those who are ready to list 100 reasons why RRR can't go to Oscars, first learn properly about how Oscars works, then spread your dumb knowledge. The thing you are saying why RRR can't win Oscar because of its over-the-top action, this rule just applies for one category of Oscars that is 'best foreign film' (for which Chello Show is sent). But you might not know there are plenty of other categories too in Oscars which RRR has great chance to win such as 'Best OST album','Best Original Dance(Natu Natu),'Best Costume design' etc... So stop being inferior about your own cinema thinking that RRR is Indian movie so that will never be Oscar-level. Hollywood's A-list Screenwriters and filmmakers inviting SS Rajamouli to America to interview him how he imagines such grandeur of the film he makes; Meanwhile some Pseudo-intellectual Inferior Indians : Kya tha be RRR me? Woh toh tatti typical Masala movie hai, India ka maal itna famous thodi na ho sakta hai foreign me... kuch toh gadbad hai, chalo isko Tatti Overrated Cringe movie bolke COOL ban jata hu😎 Hollywood ke directors toh Ch*tiye hai with 0% Movie experience thats why they are praising RRR, asli Movie-critic toh me hu. Indians when they try to justify Marvel characters doing impossible stuff : Oh Bro they are superheroes so they can do all this action just look at the Cinematography in this scene, look at the detailing. This scenes seems so real. Indians while watching RRR's impossible stuff : Are yeh kya hai be, ye toh illogical hai! isme physics kaha hai? Kam se physics daalo movie me tab hi hum dekhenge.. The main problem with you inferior Indians is you never watched RRR from a perspective different than just watching a 'regular masala movie'! If you ever heard of '24 Crafts of a Movie' concept by Hollywood, you would know that RRR excels in all that 24 aspects equally, not I am saying this, this is the statement by A-list Hollywood Critics. The problems with us Indians is that Foreigners accepted the over-the-top genre of RRR and looked at other aspects of RRR whereas we Indians are still busy in finding Physics in RRR and ingonring all other aspects.,

Selection of Gully Boy as an Oscar submission to me felt so absurd, there was Tumbaad, Kumbalangi Nights, and I think even Hellaro and Sonchiriya were there. So many great films and Gully Boy was what they chose. The Lunchbox, Sardar Udham and The Great Indian Kitchen not being selected by the jury was also a surprise to me. I do know that an American award isn't necessary for a film to prove it's brilliance, but if we are taking part in a competition, why not give our best shot. I am not taking anything away from the film that has been sent for the Oscars, but the jury must also look at the current situation, and RRR was the perfect choice for this year seeing the traction it is getting in the West. Needless to say, the jury is making constant blunders to say the least. Edit: I forgot that even Super Deluxe was a choice in 2019, but Gully Boy was what they sent lol..

Fun fact - 90% the supporting cast inside the court scenes, which takes up the majority of the film, aren't even real actors. They were randomly picked up from the particular town that the movie is set in, and auditioned. I loved all of their performances, especially the judge's, whom like Jaby, even is my favourite. You will never think even for a second that these people are untrained actors, while watching the film. It's miraculous that the director was able to get such amazing performances out of these people to be honest. It's truly a must watch film. It should be watched especially for the message that it gives.

Super deluxe would've been the movie to be nominated for oscar not tumbad or gullyboy.(Basing on my opinion) Super deluxe is so underrated that when you watch this movie, you really feel that the quality of characters in the movie and the story with all the philosophy behind each scene that elevates the viewers experience with multiple thinking patterns of the world that you're looking into. Also the amount of focus that you need in this movie is absolutely 0 because the world that super deluxe created is out of the world(heavily gripping). Hits you with social, political, emotional points of the movie that makes you question why the board didn't certify this masterpiece to send it for oscars. PURE POLITICS in this world we live in.

all of these are distractions, the main problem of indian cinema and art community in general is, that artists (writers, directors etc) are not being able to be or just dont be in there own individual creative journey and self learn the craft and create there own approach and style of art and make whatever they want, rather than molding themselves to fit in categories. And also there is generally this culture in author and film community that they dont give there 100 percent and try to achieve little more and being in uncharted territories

Yes, agreed, those criticisms are off base. Americans really don't care about showing the British in a bad light. I can't think of anybody who would be offended by it or even care. Even many Americans now are jaded about the Oscars because it is no longer about awarding quality movies-- it's all political and just about the personal interests of some people in Hollywood. The Oscars doesn't even award American movies and actors who truly deserve to be recognized, and it gives the same treatment to foreign movies! Irrfan's disappointment when he learned about Lunchbox not being selected says everything about the state of the Oscars... Unfortunately there are many brilliant Indian movies which will never be recognized, but I also don't think the strength of Indian cinema needs American award shows for validation and praise. The high quality of a movie will be obvious to anyone who sees it, and if the West wants to ignore Indian movies because of stereotypes and a lack of understanding, then it is their loss for ignoring such quality pictures.

Your pronunciation of the film Nna thaan case kodu just cracked me up 🤣😂. Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu got mixed reviews in TN as well. For me, VTK was good mostly bcoz of it's technical qualities as you mentioned and the acting of STR which was surprising as he's never explored this side of him. For GVM too, this is not his Territory. I agree with the indulgence of many things into the screenplay but it did not bore me anywhere while watching. Maybe I'm used to watch slowburn films even in theaters, that the lag didn't affect me anywhere. The climax was a bit rushed but I'm in for the sequel as it can explore many themes moving forward. Btw, the story is by Jayamohan who is a very popular author in TN. Jayamohan along with GVM has taken care of screenplay and dialogues.Flaws aside, Overall I liked VTK-Part1 The kindling. Oke oka jeevitham(Telugu)/ Kanam(Tamil). I watched the tamil version in theaters. What an overwhelming and wholesome experience it was. The acting, the screenplay and direction, the music all fell into place very well. Time travel element and emotional core blended really well into the narrative ❤👏. Overall, this was a beautiful experience. As a half malayali, I'm sorry that I still haven't watched Nna thaan case kodu and Attention please 😔. Will watch asap.🙂 RRR for Oscars had the potential bcoz the west was raving about the film. The Lunchbox was a miss followed by RRR. Maybe this thought has to be changed that only art films should get Oscars. RRR is not an easy film to make. Tons and tons of hardwork and sweat are behind the film. Some are criticizing that RRR is over the top but the emotional core of the story is beautifully blended within the action packed narrative. West validation is also important for the market of Indian films to expand. I'm hoping that RRR gets nominated in general categories so that Indian films can get a still wider audience there also.

The magic of discovering cinema in an unknown language and following up with actor names.. a skill which Anmol has gained with his interest and profession over times and we the viewers, sometimes also do. I remember the time in college when I was "in love with" Anushka Shetty having now seen nearly every movie of hers upto Baahubali. I love Vijay Sethupathi's acting and have even watched the horrible Annabelle Sethupathi and the pointless but still entertaining Kathuvakula Rendu Kaadhal. Last week I saw Anjaam Pathira since it was released on Goldmines KZfaq channel in Hindi as Police Story, so I immediately recognised the actor in a thumbnail as Kunchako Boban. With Jammy, the audience also grows in choice through the eyes of his intellect and understanding. Kudos, bro

Have you seen the KZfaq channel of the Oscars? Especially the scene at the Oscars? Where jaibhim was aired! A few people(here) dismiss RRR as just a commercial cinema failing to observe the nuances put forward by the movie. However the rest of the world sees RRR presented as a Shakespearean tragedy, from the songs (like dosti and even nacho nacho) fitting the movie and describing the scenes as they happen(none of which feels out of place) to characters acting consistent, despite being physically strong they are fragile in some places(Bheem cries when he sees Malli for the first time, Ram when he sees the locket of Sita). RRR can also be compared to Hollywood's commericial cinema like Django Unchained which also was about a badass character overcoming his oppressors or perhaps even Braveheart. RRR isn't a copy of anything at Hollywood, it's an original material(though has familiar beats) but it is our own thing, we made a 3hr period drama be interesting enough that audiences root for protagonist all throughout, and have dance offs which still feels the part of the world and makes you wanna dance those steps yourself. RRR is unique(although not completely to us, it still is fresh in lot of places) piece of cinema which just gives cinephiles hope that mainstream films can be artsy and awe-inspiring and also not boring like most oscar nominees. It's justified for you, Anmol to be pissed at a sure shot winner not getting sent for nominations.

Nnan Than Case Kodu is definitely a brilliant experience with its simplicity and storytelling. However, I hated the awfully translated English subtitles on Hotstar, at times it showed the complete opposite of what was being said. (And they have never had such bad subtitles before) Unfortunately with theatres too, it's difficult to find shows with english subtitles. I wish I could learn the language easily.

According to our jury, a Oscar nomination worth movie should be about some social issue. It can be poverty, lack of infrastructure, lack of education and opportunities, naxalism etc. Basically our movies should reflect the western idea of third world nations.

Exactly correct. These topics are called "Oscar bait" because the people who make these decisions in the award show are obsessed with them. I understand wanting to win a contest but I don't think India needs validation from an American award show that does not even properly recognize talent of its own movies and people. (I stopped caring about the Oscars years ago because they clearly lost interest in awarding quality movies, directors, actors, etc.) There must be another way to promote Indian cinema and showcase quality movies without begging the West for validation. :/

Theme for an Indian movie to be shortlisted in oscars- 1. Characters revolve around dirt and poverty. 2. Show unrealistic real situations. 3. Shouldn’t contain any melody songs. 4. No hyping up scenes. 5. Should be dull and gloomy. 6. Protagonist dies miserly etc.

That is how slumdog millionaire won oscars, and also that is how many Indians won oscars. Isn't it? Do you expect FFI should send mass masala cringes like heropanti, Rrr and sallu bhai movies for unrealistic scenes. Just see difference between freedom struggle movies Gandhi and RRR.

For those who think we don't need oscar validation to prove the film's worth. It's not about validation, it's about commerce. An Indian commercial film winning an oscar will open up a whole new market for Indian films, it will make whole western world more receptive to Indian cinema.

Aayirathil oruvan is a film based on a fictional Chola empire similar to PS 1, which is directly comparable to Bahubali if not better. To those who haven't seen the film it is a must watch film which shifts it's tone between various elements such as action/adventure to fantasy. It is certainly an Underrated gem Fun fact : Anurag Kashyap chose G.V.Prakash's score for Gangs of Wasseypur after this film

RRR is earning praises from foreigners, proving different style of story elements (dance numbers, over the top action, dramatic scenes) with unique executions can be viewed by anyone as long as the story is good and make audience feel connected with characters.

We actually don't know but south movie industry especially Malayalam and Tamil film industry are making gems one by one. Hridayam What a movie man! And the recent one of Dhanush and Nitya menon is amazing as well. There is not a single Bollywood movie which is better. Bollywood have had history of remakes whether it is a song, movie or even background music. Bhool bulaiya 2 is actually mixture of few south indian horror films too. Nobody noticed but it actually is.

I kind of disagree here. Surely FFI is flawed however Pan Nalin is an exceptional director. I saw the film trailer and I somehow got why the film made it and that though unanimously. 1. It was celebrating the concept of cinema. Usually Indian art cinema is filled with shades of Hollywood, Italian neorealism, New French Wave, Japanese noir, Korean Wave etc. We are not really creating out own wave. We are merely taking shades from other cinema waves. 2. Is South, Hindi and Bengali the only pioneers of Indian cinema? So what if a Gujrati movie which did not get as much PR hype as the others is getting nomination? Directors like Rajamouli have a huge money to buy the national and international press and PR. And we Indians are so naive that whatever is being advertised to us on the internet, we automatically lap it up. People in Bollywood are clearly doing chamchagiri of the South so that they can expand their business to non-hindi speaking states. How many times Pan Nalin's films have got the mainstream cinema hype that other received for their mediocre content? Just because small directors need a big production banner, being in the coterie of well known directors, cozying up with big stars, large scale PR machinery, marketing etc to succeed. Then we are indirectly supporting nepotism, cliques, camps and cartel system which we have been fighting against! What is the whole point of ranting about Karan Johar and star kids when we ourselves cannot support independent cinema. 3. Do we really need to show an 'us vs them' narrative in films in order to generate unity? Do we really need to show villains in order to make our films successful? TBH I have not watched Chello Show but even in the trailer itself, there was nobody really bad or the oppressor. Just a kid getting inspired to make movies. Isn’t that positive? Why do we need to be so negative all the time? 4. I agree with the poverty porn argument to some extent but firstly- a vast majority of Indians still live in villages and there is nothing wrong in living in villages. Villagers are also intelligent in their own way. Secondly, when we watch films based in Italian, English, American, countryside; We call that exotic but when it is our own village, we somehow view it as filthy. Even films like The Kite Runner, The Salesman and even a Hollywood film like Joker showed poverty and they have been sent to international film festivals. Were they thinking that the world will view them in a certain way? No! 5. Lastly, regarding remakes. Even Hollywood takes inspiration from several movies around the world including China. The Departed (which itself was a remake of a Hong Kong movie) and La La Land have ‘taken inspiration’ from several movies. Instead of feeling great that an independent film from our country is getting global recognition. We are sitting and cribbing. Also we are the same audience that complains about how bad ‘masala movies’ are as compared to international standards but we still root for RRR to get an Oscar nomination.

Ah, what a sensible comment finally! Good one, thank you. Also, is RRR really so good that we want it to be sent for whatever awards?? Bcz it's honestly a very very mediocre film, do we really want to celebrate mediocrity?
