Continuing with our Indian Peaks Wilderness thru hike, now in sections, we went back out to where we left off last time at the 4th of July Trailhead and up to Arapaho Pass and then down into Caribou Lake.
On this segment, we cover nearly 12 miles of some of the most scenic and exhilarating trails within the IPW. Gaining 3,214' and losing 3,204' from start to finish. The weather was darn near perfect, despite the wind and cold temperatures above tree line. There was still remnants of a recent snow and several wildlife sightings including a bull moose, cow elk, a deer and the occasional marmot and pika.
The trail is well marked, though the campsites at Caribou Lake are somewhat elusive, sites 5 and 6 were obvious, as well what appeared to be several illegal campsites. We have been at the Hessie and 4th of July Trailheads several times in the past month and the National Forest Service is (thankfully) patrolling the area and checking permits.
All in all, we can definitely propose that we have indeed mapped out a grand south to north thru hike of the Indian Peaks Wilderness. Though only hiking this in sections, currently, we have been on all the trails and would highly recommend this as an epic 4 to 5 day thru hike in the Indian Peaks Wilderness.

What an amazing trail, we've been wanting to piece together a hike that would take us from the Hessie TH up to Camp Dick. Granted, things didn't go as planned, it was a great outing. We're solid with the route and can't wait to get back out there!

Beautiful video. Nice music. I have never been to that part of Indian Peaks. Looks like I have some new exploring to do.

Thank you, Bill. The IPW has been a long favorite of ours. This is an area we've only seen from a distance, till now, and have wanted to explore for some time. It has been part of an ongoing project to come up with a 4 to 5 day end to end thru hike of the IPW. Access to Caribou Lake can be made via Arapaho Pass (4th of July TH), Caribou Pass ((Junco Lake TH), and Arapaho Creek TH (Monarch Lake). Hands down, it is one of the best destinations in the IPW. Let us know if you get there and how your experience was! 😎

Caribou has easily made its way into the top tier category for a day hike or overnight trip. That said, we're confident we've come up with a mapped out 4 to 5 day thru hike in the IPW.

I see you’re still using the trusty Duplex. I’m currently trying to make up my mind on whether to take my Plex Solo or the Duplex on the CT. While the solo did great on my Weminuche trip and the weight savings is a good thing, I feel it might become a bit claustrophobic feeling for 5 weeks on trail. Decisions, decisions.

Duplex worked great for both of us on the CT and is just as good for one! All of our gear and the pups fit inside, which is super important to us, we don't like leaving anything outside for critters to get at. An added plus, if you get caught in a storm, you have room, and it has one of the fastest pitches around. That said, we really enjoy the Triplex for all the same reasons, just a little more room.

Your Videography is just spectacular. Just watched your other two films where your pup got sick. Glad everything worked out for all four of you. May I ask what camera you film with? Your editing is very smooth too.

Thank you for the kind words, it really means a lot to us! We're pretty simple with our gear, just using GoPro cameras, a Hero 7 Black and a Hero 9 Black. They're lightweight, can handle the elements, and are simple to use. We started using GoPro back in late 2018 in preparation for documenting our Colorado Trail thru hike in 2019 and have been happy with them ever since.
