I'm glad to hear it's working out for you. Here in Idaho, the DMV recommends that if the vehicle does not have a title, don't buy it, as it's nearly impossible to get an Idaho title from a Bill of Sale. It makes no sense when you're dealing with 50+ year old motorcycles.

I'm in Illinois we have to do a bonded title, expensive and long. I have always said they should make it easy, simple and fast and they, the man, could generate a lot of revenue with the extra fees and plates they would sell.

In Texas, I built my Trail 70 from the ground up…no bill of sale. When I went to title the bike, they said I had to get an inspection from a ASE Mechanic to verify it road worthiness. No Mechanic would sign off on my bike. I was so disappointed. I waited a year and just forgot about the whole process. Then it hit me. I asked my best friend to just say he sold me the bike “as is” without a title. Took the bill of sale to my DMV and after the police inspection, they issued me a bonded title for the bike. The bond will expire in 3 years and my title will be a permanent title. Don’t ever say you built a bike from the ground up…always do a Bill of sale when titling your bike.

Great info Mike, I am in California and it's almost impossible unless you know of someone that understands the loop holes, I obtained 2 vehicles last year as a gift with no pink slip's or bill of sales, A friend of mine told me to try this one outfit and a hour later I had both vehicle's in my name ad 3 weeks later had the pink slips. There is always a way, I just got lucky that a friend knew this person that made it happen.

The Indiana process seems to be similar to what we go through in Texas but ours is in fact more complicated. Depending on the county you reside in, not just any police officer can do a VIN inspection. We have to go to the local DMV office (Bexar county… San Antonio) where once a month a group of local cops from the auto theft squad do VIN inspections to make sure the bike is not stolen or titled in someone else’s name. It is hard to get an appointment for that inspection, they only do it once a month and the slots fill up fast. If the bike is not stolen or titled with someone else, you get a form that you send off to DMV in Austin along with a signed sellers bill of sale and a completed application for a bonded title. If DMV approves that, you go to an insurance company and get a bond. Once you get a bond, they will approve you to go to a local county tax office and apply for a blue bonded title in your name, which you should get. If there are no claims on the title in the next 3 years, you can apply for a clear blue title in your name. Between the application fee, the cost of the bond, etc, you might spend $150 (as I understand), and this only gives you a title, it does not include registering the vehicle and getting a plate to drive on public streets. You can register a vehicle and get plates on a bonded title. I’ve not gone through the whole process but am about to give it a go, so it is possible I’ve left out a step. I’ve tried the Vermont registration work around (registration-no title) on a 1968 CT90 with no success (I got the bike registered by Vermont and got a Vermont plate but could not get a Texas title at our local tax office title based on a Vermont registration), but like Mike found in Indiana, you can go to different local tax offices on different days and may get different outcomes. It seems really complicated but I’m guessing after you go through it once or twice, it is not terrible. Will never be easy though.

Great information Mike. I got my frame titled and registered in the state of TN with a bill of sale, application, and a form stating how much the was worth. I think it cost me around $58.

I’m currently bonding for title in Colorado. It’s a lot of steps, and I definitely learned a lot of if I do this again. Most important thing is to get a bill of sale notarized with the seller. That would have saved me time and money going through the DoR paperwork process.

In California you go to DMV showing the bill of sale get paperwork on the bike. They tell you to take it to California highway patrol to have the vin verified. They will verify that the bike is not stolen and sign it off paperwork back to DMV they give you a plate And tags. Be sure to show them proof of insurance and when you take the bike to CHP TO The VIN verified? It needs to be together if not even running.

I'm in SC. I have done 4 lost titles here. 2 of which have been Trail 70s. It's really easy but still a process and takes a few weeks.

Hiya bud, over here we have the dvla who do all the paperwork to licence a bike or car, they are so strict and a nightmare to get what we call the logbook. Glad you have got your title

Sadly I’m in Louisiana, without a previous signed title and notorized bill of sale they won’t do anything. I’ve come across a couple of old trail 70 and without a title it’s virtually worthless in our state

Did you have to have the bike physically with you or is the law enforcement inspection form enough? This is great news for the CT200 frame/wheels I just picked up for $70!!! Got that same BOS filled out by the seller too.

Too much of a hassle where I live. No title no go. People post bikes all the time with no titles and put it’s easy to obtain one. Well I figure if it’s so easy go get one then sell the bike.
