The song "White Queen" has got to be the greatest hidden gems in the Queen catalog in my opinion.

Probably one of the most beautiful songs ever written by Sir Brian May!! He was inspired by a crush he had on a girl in his college Biology class! So romantic! This live version is a treasure chest of jewels 💎 and the studio version is a “Tolkien” work of art! Please check that out, too! 🩵

Freddie was technically British, being from Tanzania when it was a British Protectorate. He went to a British boarding school in India. Queen has many awesome concerts to draw from, anything from Montreal 1981, Wembley 1986, Milton Keynes 1982, Rock in Rio and some of their music videos are fantastic...While Adam Lambert is good, I wouldn't switch to him until you've exhausted Freddie's catalog....most of us tolerate Adam because he keeps Queen touring.

Metallica are fans of Queen, they did a cover of Queens 'stone cold crazy' and won a grammy.

If you notice, Freddie is wearing the same "winged Mercury" suit that he wears in the official video of "Bohemian Rhapsody".

They were NOT rich at this stage. This is embryonic Queen. This is where they show the musical power, before they honed into the pop hit machine later. Queen between 71-1980 is so inspirational. Then again here and there until Innuendo was back to form. Freddie was of course over camping it as a performance being ad British as he could be. Racism was an issue, he wasn't out as gay either. Regardless, they grew into a perfect machine. Freddie came into his comfort zone. The tragedy struck. Now we can only enjoy their legacy.

They were young and raw and inexperienced. It was like lightning stuck the same spot 4 times and put these guys together. There was something special from the start. Mick Rock (photographer) said of their early days, "The stage was microscopic and Freddie was performing like he's in a stadium!" 😁 I saw them in the 70s and love all of these early performances. But I'm an old hippie. 😉 Also Brian was very into the rock and roll of it and you really see that in his early guitar. Just flawless. Be a Queen reaction channel if you like. Freddies voice did change over the years. His range increased and he really worked on himself.

1975 was the year when BoRhap was released, and they started to race along the superstardom. This gig was the icing on the cake.

As some have already commented Sir Dr Brian May made his own guitar when he was around 16 I believe with his father. Took them about a year and a half. The neck was made from a 100 year old fireplace mantle. The body of the guitar made from an oak table, the tremolo bar made from part of a bicycle seat and a knitting needle. It is called the Red Special. There are videos explaining how it was made. Brian had very specific ideas how he wanted it to sound. John Deacon graduated with high honors in electrical engineering. He made an amp for Brian using a speaker cabinet and things he found in the trash. Brian still uses it to this day. He had tried to have another one made but no one could duplicate the sound. It is referred to as the Deacy Amp. Brian went back to college in the early 2000s to finish his PHD in astrophysics and does some work for NASA. You need to react to Now I’m here at Wembley. There is also a Now I’m Here multicam video Roger Taylor that all cameras are focused on Roger. He said this is his toughest song to perform. There is a multicam video of this song for John Deacon as well.

I highly recommend "The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke." It's one of my favorite early Queen songs because of all of it's fantasy imagery and faerie references.

This is such an incredible performance from the first note to the very last. Every member of the band was spot on, truly bringing thier "A Game" to this show...and every show. Brian wrote this song about a girl in one of his classes that he fancied but couldn't muster the courage to ask her out. When he finally did she was already with someone else. It is also influenced by a book he had recently read. Brian built his guitar with his dad when he was a teen. He still uses that guitar today and it is still the original. Queen formed in 1970 and I believe they released their first album in 1974 and their second one later that year. They had some really poor management early on so it was a bit of a slow start even though they were touring and producing albums. Queen fans are divided on Adam. While he is not Freddie, nobody ever will be, Adam is an exceptional singer and can sing all of the Queen songs in the key they were written.

You can really hear the bass on this particular cut. So good.

Here’s my opinion. This Christmas Eve live performance was only a couple months after they became instant global successes with the release of Bohemian Rhapsody. Two reasons Freddie sounds a little different is his vocal nodules haven’t caused him issues yet from overusing his voice, second is, Brian said in a documentary that Freddie didn’t like his voice after hearing it on a replay. Brian said Freddie worked very hard to tweak his sound around this time. In the 70’s he didn’t have that famous gravel sound! They were in the top 3, if not number one world wide. They have sold over 300,000 albums. They had an audience of 420,000 people in Rio. They were massively huge in South America and Japan. When they first started they were a support band for Mott the Hoople once. After just that one time they began to headline which is rare. They were all college educated guys who played multiple instruments. No Adam Lambert please. I can’t handle him trying to be a “replacement”. Freddie's singing is not the only thing that I can say is great, but his ability and talent on the piano♥ The Queen band does not focus on one type or style of music. 4 individuals with their own talents. their catalogue is so huge and diverse that it‘s really hard to tell where to start. i don‘t know if there is any other band that covered so many genres. next to classic rock there’s hard rock, progressive rock, pre-metal as they call it, folk and even funk, soul, kind of reggaeish, an arabic sounding song, dixieland, vaudeville and much more...it’s all in their catalogue. they‘ve got something for every situation and every mood....you will see. unbelievable. what do you prefer?

As Taylor Hawkins(RIP♥)said "you have to take that Ferrari out of the garage". I'm glad Adam came along because it enabled Roger and Brian to tour again and bring Queen music to a new generation. John hated the music business and Freddie passing was the last straw. Roger and Brian love touring. I saw them in 2019 and it was a spectacular show. Adam's voice can handle the tricky vocals especially the power ballad like Who Wants to Live Forever. Live at the Isle of Wight Festival is the best version. Adam trained in opera as well. He sings Nessun Dorma when Queen toured Italy. His voice is stunning. Freddie went to a public Church of England school in India where the boys were taught to be very British! In the 70s concerts he chatted a lot with the fans, probably because the venues were smaller. Brian did as well.I saw them in '77 and Freddie was totally charming and very funny. Roger said in an interview that they were never going to get Sacha Baron Cohen to play Freddie, they were wanting Ben Whishaw but he had scheduling conflicts. The Rainbow 1974 concert is one of my favourites. The whole thing is on KZfaq. Roger's backing vocals are killer on In the Lap of the Gods. Great reaction!

Queen formed in 1970. This was 1973 or 74. Killer Queen came out in 74, BoRhap in 75. They had no money til Night at tne Opera in 75. The first couple of yrs they mostly practiced & wrote, got used to working together . They played small venues for a while & toured the US supporting Mott the Hoople. I love The Struts too, you should see the video of them with the Foo Fighters. Luke & Taylor sing Under Pressure! Fantastic!

Brian May and Roger Taylor were in a band together pre Queen in the late 60’s called Smile, that struggled into 1970 when the bassist/ vocalist Tim Staffel left. This is covered in the Film Bohemian Rhapsody. The Freddie era band began around 1971 with the trio auditioning bass players finally settling on John Deacon who had relatively little band experience and was a student in electrical engineering. White Queen is a May composition that dates back to the Smile days.

Some folks prefer ‘70s Queen, some ‘80s Queen. That’s ok. A listen to just about anything from the Wembley concerts in ‘86 is good. Under Pressure, Now I’m Here, Another One Bites the Dust…Budapest ‘86 Who Wants to Live Forever,… then Montreal ‘81 Save Me, I’m in Love with My Car…just can’t go wrong with live Queen. Already such geniuses and yet the world was just beginning to listen. ❤Watch Days of Our Lives the Queen documentary to get an accurate history of the band. According to Brian May it was a slow slog. Their first record company reps took most of their money and overbooked the band so that Freddie eventually developed vocal nodes and so singing became painful but he muscled through it. According to Brian when Freddie first heard his voice played back to him he said he hated it and commenced to practice over and over until he learned how to sing to his satisfaction for the most part. Roger said all four were perfectionists which created magic but a lot of fights first. lol.

Love of My Life at Wembley is a must see but so is them performing it at Rock in Rio in front of 500,000 fans almost all of which didn’t speak English. This worried the band that they wouldn’t understand them. When Brian and Freddie start to perform this song (Brian plays acoustic guitar and it is just he and Freddie) the crowd sings the song to them. Brian stops playing the guitar and Freddie is momentarily caught up in the emotion of having the crowd sing in English. Also, react to Cool Cat. Freddie sings in falsetto the entire song. Freddie is playing the piano and John plays all other instruments.

About Adam Lambert there is a section of the fandom that is divided on him being the current lead singer but most people like him because he a) is not trying to be Freddie b) is actually a good performer and a human. Some people don't like his style and that's fair.

The album was divided into Side (white side) writing by Brian & side B (black side)by Freddie . Bri wrote White Queen. Side B has Freddie's Black Queen. Please listen to Black Queen! He's marvelous .

Speaking of Metallica, you should check out the version they did of Stone Cold Crazy and the original from Queen (1974) you could be surprised to hear how young Freddie was already the best… by the way Freddie was very “darling" and “my dear"…

7 seas of rye was their 1st hit and I thought this was a 1 hit wonder. How wrong I was! Freddie was not technically British. He was born in Zanzibar (Africa) of Iranian parents (Asian), Still proud to call him British!

you guys are going at this so backwards... comparing their sound to how they sound in their future. that struck me to be so unusual and while you might not like this but it tarnishes how you come across to me. Consider approaching Queen chronologically for an authentic appreciation. this performance specifically I think you missed noticing how much Freddie gave of himself. 2-3 times he completely empties his lungs (I consider it to be singing through his reserves) first time is right at the beginning with ...Ooohh🎶 and as far has your raw comments and how different... consider the 70s sound of Queen to be harnessing Freddie's voice like that of a budding delicate flower gracefully opening and building getting larger while his sound in the 80s is forceful almost an edge of anger with power to it and then the 90s he's released any angst and returned to calm and peace. This is my FAVORITE performance of this song. I feel it's more a piano solo with Brian extending the keyboard sound through his guitar in complete synch and harmony while John's bass gives it depth and Roger's drum provides heart. .... still a transcendent piano solo Freddie channeling Mozart and Beethoven during a rock concert like ONLY Freddie can. and I think I read somewhere that Freddie had the flu this Christmas Eve concert (not sure amazing if true) you're unfamiliar with alot of 'sounds' of Queen. and thinking of how Queen sounds like Metallica is solidly backwards. Next you'll bring up Ice Ice Baby hahahahahaha SMH Dragon Attack at Montreal 1981 You Take My Breath Away live at Hyde Park 1974 (swoon) In the Lap of the Gods this same concert and to throw you for a loop - do I'm Going Slightly Mad for the enjoyment of Freddie's deep register well controlled masterful story telling (its much focused on the words and visuals than the instrumentation) and his 2nd last video ever. Personally I think its his 'goodbye' to the band... very cathartic if you study it.

Metallica took Sheer Heart Attack into the studio when they recorded The Black album.

Every time I see this video I think ‘why are you focusing on Freddie on the piano when Brian is playing a scorching solo?’ In fact you hardly see Brian at all. I was fortunate to see them on their Crazy Little Tour of London in 1979 at Tiffany’s in Purley. They were of course huge by then so seeing them in a small nightclub venue was amazing. I took my then 14 year old sister to her first ever gig and she still loves them now.

I think both Freddie and Roger had the flu at this gig. I have an old bootleg of the original BBC radio broadcast and it clearly shows there, his voice cracks at certain points. Obviously they’ve fixed this for the official release. Still easily one my favourite Queen performances of all time. I would die to see them do White Queen live again…

He’s performing suffering from the flu as well was either Roger or Brian

The band had been struck by the flu before this concert, Freddie and Brian were quite sick but they did their best. You can hear it on Freddie's voice at a few spots. But Freddie's voice did become more powerful and heavier over time. This often happens with male voices. Male voices only really settle at the age of 40. But often by that time within the world of rock, singers had already destroyed their voices. At Live Aid Freddie is around 40 ,and his voice is fully matured.

I'd be interested to know where you got this link. I have seen the Odeon 1975 performance likely a hundred times and this mix is different and definitely subpar. This performance is one my favorite all time Queen performances, definitely the best performance of this song, but not with this link. Thanks for the reaction, though.
