Love that you’re testing this! Even six cameras (~$21,000) is a lot for indies and vtubers. But the point is that this stuff is POSSIBLE and it’s amazing that you’re covering it!! Also, Vicon rent their equipment and maybe indies could access a rented space? That might be more cost effective than purchasing.
@CinematographyDatabase

Yeah I've heard of game developers renting Vicon cameras for a week and going to a gym and recording a bunch of fighting animations etc. Really only companies that are producing MOCAP several times a week probably need to own their own. ALSO, there are many Motion Capture studios with pre installed systems and operators and you hire actors and rent that studio.

This is amazing. Thanks Matt for this review. Really nice system and very natural and realistic motion, BUT not for any indie/solo creator. The price is not affordable at all for individuals. In many countries 21.000$/euros is the whole income of 1 year. However it is very interesting to watch the evolution in this exciting virtual world :)

Fantastic video, Matt! Loads of quality information and a really clear demo of how an optical systems works. You’ve got a really solid set up there - and hats off for operating it yourself:) Couple of things you might like to try as you get into the weeds and start trying to get those marginal gains for what is already a really nice setup… - Middle Chest/Sternum Marker - You might want to try moving your front middle chest marker up a little so it’s on the boney part where your ribs join. If you have it on your stomach where you place it in the video, you’ll be capturing the movement of your stomach breathing, which you don’t really want. - Mid spine (t10?) Marker - Placing it a little higher on your back - the spot where you reached for it in the video would be good, and might be where you normally have it based on where you reached, so apologies if this is the case :) Putting it higher might give you better results for the spine solve as most of the bend in your spine happens in the lower part while the upper part tends to be more rigid because of your rib cage. - Attach your bottoms to your top - When you have your suit on, fasten the jacket to the trousers. Not sure what you have in your kit, but there’s usually a couple of “tabs” of Velcro which you can use to do this. You’ll need about 4 to do it. This will stop your jacket sliding up, and more importantly, your trouser falling down :) - Mic placement - Have you tried attaching your mic above your forehead on the top/front of your helmet (this is where they often go)? Might make it easier/tidier to run your cable and stop any snagging or rustling with the mic cable. - HMC Camera Position - Have you tried moving your camera/phone closer? In theory you only need the camera to be able to see your top of your forehead and bottom of your chin with your mouth open as wide as possible. Moving the camera closer will help improve the image and tracking, and reduce any inertia/ torque/wobble and neck strain :) - Mocap Camera alignment - If you put some markers on the floor in the corners of the floor area you want to capture in, you can check the camera alignment gives you the best view of the whole floor. For example, you might find rotating a camera to cover from one side to the centre spot gives you better coverage in the corners, rather than having everything aimed at the centre. - And for extra credit, build a quick model of your room in your 3d app of choice. Create some cameras with the same settings as your Vicon cameras. Put your meta human in a few key places on the floor, and use that to plan the position and angle of the cameras in your space :) Whatever you do, these are minor tweaks that may help an already pretty solid set setup. Once again, amazing work!

I agree, I think that for a good number of small/medium companies that the up front cost of optical MOCAP for this ball park price is the correct call, considering how little if any post animation clean up is needed.

We're getting there. The bod motion is pretty much spot on, this is cool. Where things still need to improve is on face capture. Your character's face still does not look natural enough, too stiff. Not sure how Unreal Engine did their face animation when they published MetaHumans for the first time, but it looked near perfect. They might have done a lot of manual fine-tuning, or using some other system. Keep up the great work !

What kind of cost are you looking at with that?

@CinematographyDatabase
@CinematographyDatabase 2 жыл бұрын
Xsens is a good option for a lot of people who do not have the space and or budget that optical requires. I consider it a completely different type of tool and solution compared to a Vicon optical system. 1. Xsens AFTER it’s HD Post Processed is OK. However it’s positional accuracy is like 5/10, it is inertial IMU sensors. 2. Vicon also performs like you've seen live/raw. Xsens live is not good, it's not really designed to be used live, it's designed to be processed by their extremely good HD Processing software. So for people doing live avatar work, Vicon is the preferred solution. 3. If you want 2+ people interacting, inertial MOCAP is pretty much not usable. Vicon can have easily 2-10 people interacting with each other and props and have positional accuracy. 4. Vicon's prop is MUCH better. 5. Xsens and really ALL other MOCAP solutions DO NOT have native retargeting tools. So when you go to put their skeleton animation onto your say MetaHuman you will get pretty noticeable feet sliding and feet/arm clipping through the body. Most professional Xsens users will retarget in Motion Builder. Vicon has a full featured retarget workflow that works live or in Vicon Post.

So great. Couple of Q's for you. Have you tried anything yet with non-humanoid rigs? ex; could you motion capture a t-rex or some other rig well enough with this setup? Noticed a couple of times that the feet clipped through the floor with your MH. Is this something you would have to cleanup in post, or do you think some extra calibration with the setup would solve? Thanks again for sharing this with us!
@CinematographyDatabase
@CinematographyDatabase 2 жыл бұрын
You could retarget to any rig technically, but as it gets more complex you’d wake to use Motion Builder. For humanoid it works like this pretty easily. Foot clipping can be fixed with a post solve and or in MotionBuilder/Maya/Unreal. Mostly the contacts are fine, but occlusion happens and then it has to guess. Better calibration and ROM always help. I’m still very new to using this system. Still learning every day.
