The wheels on your mountain bike are very important when it comes to either a custom build or simply replacing an old faithful wheelset you’ve had for years. Just like anything else, to a certain degree wheels are a subjective topic. Although there are many MTB wheel choices these days, there aren’t many brands doing something to separate themselves by thinking outside the box. One brand that is doing something very unique is Industry Nine (Or as most call it, "I9"). With their “System Wheels” not only do you have the performance benefit of the 120 points of engagement in their hubs but also the lightweight but rigid aluminum spokes. If that wasn’t enough you can also customize the anodized spokes and hubs to any color combo you desire. In this video, Jeff goes in-depth about his personal favorite when it comes to custom built top-tier mountain bike wheels.

I prefer custom wheels, but I like a lot of i9's philosophy with regards to wheel components. I personally think their hubs are a little loud (Profile is even louder... like a flight of hornets on your tail) so I am a big fan of DT Swiss and SRAM's DT-built hubs for quietness. Their rims could be prettier, though...

I've got I9 hubs on my Pivot only because of the super boost plus rear hub spacing. They are good hubs, the 3 degree engagement is not really noticeable compared to the 5 degrees on my Chris Kings. A guy I used to ride with had the pawls disintegrate on him but is probably because his idea of maintenance is soap and wax. I won't swap out for Kings when they start making this size, the reliability can be made up with extra maintenance on the I9's.

I'm a huge I9 fanboy and have 2 sets of them atm...but....I was after a more affordable 3rd wheel set to switch out for the occasional XC race and am pretty impressed with HUNT wheels from the good ol' UK. 4 degree engagement, similar engagement system used with 6 pawls, fast shipping to the US (5 days), good warranty, great customer service, etc...at about half the cost of the base level I9 305's (they cost me $430). You can't go past the I9's due the incredible quality and versatility but the HUNTs are an exceptional value if you are after something similar to the I9's but can't spend the $....they are even load'n proud like the 9's. Love the channel - keep 'em coming!

I had no idea that i9 used proprietary spokes. I like straight pull spokes but, living in Australia, I'm glad I didn't get them now. It seems like it would be quite hard and expensive to get replacement spokes. I have J-bend i9 hubs with Stans Flow rims instead. I hate the feeling of play in the cranks so I would never use anything with more than 4 degrees of engagement. Preferably less!

I have the Backcountry 360's = Addicted... No issues whatsover, I ride n live in Phoenix, which is rock garden mecca, and I weigh 240...I have had zero issues with rock to spoke destruction either. I saw a random post on MTBR stating that rocks hitting the spokes will chip the them because of the Alum brittleness eventually causing fatigue or breakage. I havnt had any issues whatsoever, and inspect them after every ride if I hear a telltale PING (unique sound, cant miss it). I agree with your assessment on the stiffness and feel, I track like a bounty hunter now. Extra weight on the 360 compared to the 305 not a issue (for me), I have them on a enduro hardtail and I like that extra tail cush that the lowered pressure 2.8 provides... I LOVE my bike but as we all do, I find myself daydreaming n scheming at possible new frame options, and they are all using my I9 wheelset as the foundation...NOT going back. Kudos that you use them as your go to!

Same as RaceFace Vault hubs, sounds same too... RF better sealed and bearings, but they make the rear hubs as 2 bits bonded together, so there is a known fault with the join bond breaking, allowing micro movement and clicking/ snicking / creaking noise. They warranty them, but If they machined them as one piece the RF Vault would be the best hub out there.

Absolutely! And I still ride them. The alloy rims on these are incredibly strong and leaves me with zero worries of dinging or destroying a rim. I like that reassurance over carbon rims. And the big performance gains here are in the hub and spoke system and hub internals.

I don't see anyone in the MTB space talking about them, but if you're looking for something with ridiculous engagement I had a wheel built with Profile Racing's Elite hub. That's another company doing everything in-house, in St. Petersburg FL. Their hubs are indestructible and their lifetime warranty is no questions asked, but their wheels cost barely any more than the hub because they build them with Sun rims (my favorite rims, but they're really affordable!). I'd recommend doing some crossing over into the BMX/MTB space, because there's really durable, affordable, and light components trickling in or convertible to MTB. I exclusively use BMX cranks on my bikes these days so I can have the stiffest, cheapest ones possible.

At the end of the day I9 might loose money if they supplied OEM. Sure you have economy of scale but if I9 needs to make some large capital investments in tooling to keep up with demand....then its a wash. In addition they would have to sell the components to the OEM at a far less expensive cost than to a dealer..Which makes it even harder to turn some ROI.

Most capable mechanics should be able to service the I9 wheels. There is nothing about them that makes them more difficult to service than any other high-quality wheel. :)

Unfortunately, industry nine is not offering a sturd wheelset for people 220lb at a reasonable price, at least compared with DT swiss and Hope. I could find wheels DT swiss 1700HX and Hope Forte 30 at ~$800 or less, able to support my weight. Industry 9 goes up to $1500 to offer same capability. I would love to buy I9 because looks great quality, but at least for now... seems not an option compared with these other two wheels, which are also comparable quality.

This doesn't even qualify as click-bait, because the whole world knows I-Nine wheels, your taste or not, cannot be described as garbage. Have these hubs on my SC Reserves. Night and day over the Formula hubs the bike came with. Gotta grease that hub though. Annoying the piss outta me 20-30 min into a ride.

I had my first problem with my 305 wheels after about 6 months of riding... blew up the torch hub. All sorts of metal inside. THey're going to replace the hub, hopefully the next one lasts longer. The drive ring inside the hub fractured.
@WorldwideCyclery
@WorldwideCyclery 5 жыл бұрын
Ahh that's a bummer. We hear about that happening with an industry nine Hub about once every three years. It is extremely rare and when you compare it to that same problem against other Hub designs I think they have the most durable stuff. We've actually never had a wheel set that we sold or a customer come in with that issue on an industry nine wheelset, we've just heard the rumors. Don't give up on 'em! 😎

@@WorldwideCyclery One of my riding buddies just has his torch i9 fail too. Either a bad batch, or the extra torque from these larger wheels these days is just too much for the hubs to handle.

What are your thoughts on Halo wheels. Sam Pilgrim uses Halos. They are cheap compared to i9's or reserves. He is obviously bought and paid for, but at the same time he is crazy hard on bikes. If you ain't heard of them, check em put and post a video. :) www.halowheels.com/
