How to maintain relationships with Artists & music producers within the audio industry.
Is THIS why YOU are struggling to get mixing clients and network within the audio industry?
My name is Paul Third and I am a Scottish youtuber / audio engineer / mixing engineer / audio geek. I mostly cover audio engineering related content ranging from audio plugin shootouts / plugin comparisons (acustica audio plugins, universal audio etc etc) to actual analog vs digital / gear vs plugins plugin tests via access analog and mix analog. I even include ddmf plugindoctor tutorials in my plugin reviews so you can be your very own plugin tester and experiment and understand whats actually going on under the hood. I also discuss digital music distribution from time to time and like to give my viewpoint on online music distributors such as onerpm and distrokid.
All of my audio blind tests involving music production software are conducted in avid pro tools 2021 which is my main daw and I also use HOFA blind test 4U as my blind test software. In terms of my audio interface I record and monitor through a universal audio apollo x6 through topping dx7 pro+ dac/amp and use an se dynacaster for all of my voice overs.

Just listen! Actually listen! If you take a genuine interest in what people want and let them share it, there can be a true connection. The farther you're down the chain, the more you have to assume that what wanted to be expressed IS already expressed - BUT you can STILL take an honest interest. If you get the reputation of "he just gets me (and what I want to express)" you will always be the first pick.

Thanks for sharing Paul, your honesty is appreciated. I had a friend who had Asberger's, he was amazing. Your 'disadvantage' gives you a unique perspective over others. Remember, people you hear badmouthing others more than likely badmouth you. Keep on it!

Really important lesson in there! When you see a person doing bad stuff, they will probably do bad stuff to you too. Don't hang around them and find out. I can't emphasize enough how important this lesson is. If one understands it without having to learn it the hard way - that's gold. I'm a slow learner - don't be a slow learner!

Spot on about communication. Something to add which blankets communication to both clients and when networking is to listen. Often people in discussion will talk about things their passionate about, but also people like to talk about their pain-points or shit going on in their world. By listening, you can learn a lot about situations and people and ultimately provide value in the form of catering to their needs you learn about.

I watched this one again. I am not “on the spectrum ,” but have do have many friends and loved ones who are. Your honesty and genuine social confusion here is heartwarming to “the rest of us.” I know you have trouble seeing and understanding the little nuances that your videos convey-you know the main points, and you seem to understand where you may piss us off (lol), but you are an invaluable resource to even those of us who have been doing this on a high level for 40 years! That should make you feel good- spectrum or no spectrum. Your information is spot on, and the way you present it is hands above most of the others. Eyes open, head high, and please keep up the good work. God bless

Paul, I had an old boss from a different industry who always told me “first, always understand the customers requirement.” This goes along with what you said about communication on time frames, but also, what does the customer want? I have had people come to me to as for recording and mixing, but what they really wanted was full Production, and wanted my creative input with some songwriting. Others may not want this. As you pointed out, up front communication is key!

I've quite literally gotten business like this. People who were disappointed by previous interactions with other engineers who were pretentious or absolutely wanted their idea pushed through, or were dicks, or chaotic or even insecure and thus fumbling around. The people who come from those engineers and find you being pleasant, precise, on time, and accomodating all around, open to their idea and actively listening to them, they will be loyal clients. At least in my experience. Because they go from disappointment to a feeling of: wow this guy gets us. And its as you say. A bit more than just being a good hang or good engineer. I found it's important to be well prepared so you come over as knowledgeable and professional and earn trust. It's important to show genuine care about your client and their art, and it's important to seem stoked about their music. And honestly i find that when i do that. I also have an easier time showing them some improvements to their tracks and convincing them to fix a few things if needed. In any case. Good vid Paul. This job is much more than just plugins and technical stuff and i think people in KZfaq world forget that too often!

I have autism as well (previously also aspergers, but that word isn’t used anymore). It’s tough working with musicians. As so many are different. I find i work best with actual professionals vs people who think they are professionals or seeking fame. The more patient people are with me and straight up the better it goes. Also I’ve focused more on other kinds of work than musicians and that’s seemed to be better for me😂. As far as the rough mix thing, there’s also a lot of demoitis if you will. Especially when the rough is just awful. Also some artists are just never happy. “A good hang” is truly everything though. It’s a LARGE part of the job and why we get hired back. To the point that you don’t need to be a good mixer, just a good hang and market yourself well. I have seen awful engineers who are half way decent producers get tons of gigs based on good hangs and having the social skills i don’t.

My hope is that youtube can help me out as I'm pretty well liked on the whole. Have my haters but networking wise I'm pretty happy. I'm very lucky with the people that have reached out cause that's the thing im absolutely terrible at. Everybody has to come to me as I'm not very forthcoming which is something I'm working on as I know how important that is. When I say I'm lucky, I'm very lucky. I get surprised all the time with the people who reach out. It saddens me I don't have that natural networking brain but I think I'll get better over time

@@PaulThird I am awful with reaching out and asking for help. I’m so used to getting hyper focused on a project (and never finishing it unless it’s for a client). Yeah I’m working on it a lot. And I’m surprised how many people have helped me where I felt like they’d say no. I’ve helped a lot of people find success behind the scenes, but how about myself? 😂 na I’m not “good enough” for that. That changes soon though. Tying up a lot of personal projects and building an engineer for creation.

I admire your smiling honesty and courage drowned with kindness. I’m retired from the music industry but I was fortunate enough to work with some amazing people. The people who were most powerful and influential were then and most likely still are, just like you. And the best thing anyone ever told me about the music business? Well, I got my lucky break by making a demo for my singing neighbor, who sent it to Motown. And one day I got a knock on my door and here are 3 men from Motown. They asked me who did the arrangement, and that was me. And they offered me a job at Jobete, the publisher for Motown. I was scared that they didn’t know I had no idea what I was doing, and I had never been the only white guy, so it was hard to relax, never mind play music. I met my boss, Robert Gordy, and he was wonderful. I asked so who do I work for? And Mr. Gordy said “You work for the singer. We all do.” That was the best advice I ever got.

It's a good moto to live by as a producer or engineer. My worry would be when you get into the realms of A&R and label requirements. A lot of mixers told me to expect decisions made by guys who aren't really in the creative process. Could just be a "vocal up, drums down" and you are to deliver that regardless of whether you feel your balance is spot on. Im being told just do what they want and don't fight it. As long as the money reaches your account, just deliver what they are paying you for. Don't get ahead of yourself early in the game and start discussing points and making life difficult out if ego. Just turn up to the gig, deliver what they asked and move on to the next. So in my head im preparing myself to reign in my emotions and opinions and focus on what gets that record through the chain and noise for release. It'll be hard for me at first when or if that time comes as I'm a passionate guy and I'd hate to put my name to something that I feel isn't right but I understand that the industry is cut throat and it's a service industry and you have to stay within your pay grade

@@PaulThird I have never gone along to get along. And while that seldom fits someone’s idea of what they need, in real life it’s a valuable skill. How much of your career would you like to act like someone you’re not? I’m sorry, sir, you are who you are. Most people in the industry are following, and doing all the same things and acting like they know what’s going on. Having a point of view and a passion to get it right is everything. When you become the producer isn’t that exactly what you’ll be looking for? I mean, be kind to your artists and everyone else, but take the passion that is you, and stop considering hiding what is truly your most valuable asset.

@@PaulThird I believe the more you learn about something you're afraid about the less afraid you become. It's like making a song or mixing and then letting other people hear your work (the more you learn about what people want to hear the less scary it becomes). I take it you're not doing this full time yet and I don't know what your day job is but if I may suggest, applying for a sound engineer at a local church would be great. Not only do you exercise your skills and whatnot, work on equipment you've never tried before, but you also get to work with a lot of people (including difficult people lol). Plus it's a weekend thing.

Many big artists have autism. The one guy from "Autechre" said that he has it. "Moby" also has it. Many more have autism. In the early 90s "Moby" would have problems to be around the singing people crowd that loved his music. He said that he got into too much alcohol to get somehow through all kind of problems. So basically, the biggest weakness can become your ultimate potential tool, without knowing it.

Don't ever underestimate the role of the producer. He's probably way closer to the artist (and other artists) than the mixing engineer will ever be - and he has to be. Producers that offer recording and are not pure "beatmakers" have fewer "high profile" clients than a mixing engineer, but they have their clients more frequently. If you badmouth him, you are getting between him and his meal. But there is a thing you can do, if there are real problems with the production. Contact the producer directly! If you don't know how to contact him, ask the artist. This is a win win win for you and him. Let me elaborate: You contact him, you explain the issue you are running into and ASK him if he has any idea how to fix the issue. So you're not telling him he did a bad job, you're telling him you love the sound, but you are not able to do XYZ that you think would benefit the song even further! This opens a discussion where nobody is badmouthing the other in front of the client - he learns your world and you'll learn his world. He will have ideas and you'll know when you can ask him to fix something or send you something too. Worst case he's not open for discussion or lazy - in that case you just do your best with the mix and be done with it. First win: No bad blood. Second win: You connect to a person that wants to work with you and he does have clients he can and WILL refer to you. Third win: His skillset will improve and you'll run into fewer issues. It truly is a win win win. I think of this industry as one big circle-jerk. Pardon this imagery, but it works: Client-> Producer -> Mixer -> Mastering Engineer -> Target Audience -> Client ->Producer -> ... all it takes is one link in this chain not to be satisfied and thus stopping to satisfy the next one and the holy circle can collapse. So sometimes, even if we didn't get off, we need to do our best that the next part of the chain does. Enjoy your weekend, Paul!

When I was in LA everyone told me their honest opinions on certain guys but they told me out of pure trust. They all told me that there is tons of bitchyness in the audio world but one thing you never do is shit on somebodies door step, even if you dislike them or their work. Like you said, you never know the clients that you'll share in the future and if its a producer they'll be in first and establish that bond. Most of the advice I've been given is learn to take stuff on the chin cause if you whine and moan about everything you'll career will be over as soon as it started Be respectful and do your upmost to not burn bridges early

@@PaulThird Mostly true, but I'll play devils advocate: Don't take too much shit. You have to know where to draw the line. Both in terms what you put up with socially and what work you take on professionally. At the end of the day your name will be associated with whatever it becomes and while you can turn an angel into the devil, you can't turn the devil into an angel. In other words: If it's bad, it's bad. Also I'd be careful about people that tell you their honest opinion out of pure trust. You best realize that it's still highschool and Mamas just a little girl. Bishes and envyous dorks call others bishes all the time. I recommend staying clear of the talk about others and focus on talking about the music!
