Simon, Mike & Tim are invited to came take a look at the INEOS GRENADIER Prototype and are taken for a ride along.
Come enjoy a fun crazy day with the three of us as we ask a bunch of questions you might just want the answers to .... and make a host of assumptions about the final product.
Hats off to the INEOS marketing team for a great day out and excellent catering. Thanks also to Tim Abbott for answering our questions and to Ricky our awesome driver and host.

Through all the dialogue some informative facts emerged in the video. There are some excellent features on this new vehicle and some real thought gone into developing the Grenadier. I am a Land Rover person and have been since 1976, having owned a Series 3 soft top (like the Australian Army used), A Land Rover Station Wagon (Series III), a Land Rover County V8 and finally a brand new Defender (1996) which I still have. In the 26 years I have owned the Defender, I have travelled extensively in the Australian "Outback" - long abandoned overgrown tracks, through the deserts, in the centre of Australia and cross county in the Pilbara and Kimberly Regions of Western Australia. Harsh terrain, dust, mud, rock, and temperatures in summer up to 45" C. I have forded flowing rivers in most states and had to weave my way out all sorts of perilous situations. Over the 26 years, apart from annual services and tires, I have changed the original clutch (for an H/D new one) and only this year (2022), the fuel pump, water pump and timing belt kit. In total, Au$8,000 spent over 26 years. It may be old technology but it never broke down in the middle of nowhere because of computer chips and programing gone wrong. When they stopped making Defenders, I was heartbroken. The newest Land Rover should NEVER have been called a "Defender" and it is far too much of an on-road vehicle focused more on a luxury look than a true "Off Road Exploratory Vehicle". The air system to elevate the vehicle another 100mm is pointless and problematic. When I heard the Grenadier was being developed by a Land Rover Defender lover, I was truly excited as its time for a new vehicle with new features surpassing the Defender, but alas these are the shortcomings of the Grenadier as I see them: (1) The ground clearance is LESS than a traditional Defender with much more underbelly gear to get caught in rocks and tree stumps or make ground contact. It should have had higher clearance. (2) The front and rear Difflocks are a brand statistically with the highest FAILURE rate - you must have the highest reliability when truly exploring hundreds of km from anywhere. (3) The Side Steps (as shown in the video) are too low and REDUCE clearance. Land Rover had a step for the sides or the rear which folded down to get into vehicle but which could be folded up to maintain most of the clearance. Perhaps the Grenadier's side sliders are higher and maintain more clearance? (4) The raised Air-Breather is not a snorkel - how silly is that? If you’re going to attach this, have it designed to do both - high air breather and afford snorkel capability. The snorkel capability is essential to any true off-roaders and allows the expedition to continue. Can it be adapted to be a snorkel - the video doesn't say? (6) Fuel Tank - 90L is simply too small for any expedition into remote areas anywhere - Australia, Africa, South America, Central Asia, etc. It needs to be 120 litres. Gerry Cans of fuel will still be needed. (7) The central electronic display - if it fails you lose almost all instrumentation and readings, other than a few in front of the driver. (8) Those inside wheel arches were retrograde - glad to hear they are being squared off. (9) Winch machinery. This is essential for any true 4WD. Although not indicated in the video, the Grenadier design only permits one type of winch to be fitted - a specially modified winch which costs $5000. A solid ARB $1800-$2000 or similar winch can't be used. Nor can you take it off your current vehicle to fit onto the Grenadier. (10) BMW is surely a good motor - but wait until you see the annual service charge. The Grenadier is a very good looking and functional vehicle which greatly attracts me (because I do love the traditional Defender look and practicality) with many very positive features. In my opinion, it could definitely have been the Rolls Royce of off-road vehicles but for the observations listed. With so many options available at additional cost, it will go over the Au$100,000 point, probably up to $110,000. Would you take this into the wilderness?

Well... the big day arrived (for me) and I went to the Scenic Rim Adventure Park south west of Brisbane (Queensland) for the Grenadier demo. It was very professionally done. This vehicle (#PT 004) really is a "prototype". It's the one featured elsewhere on KZfaq just a few days ago being escorted through heavy flood waters in the Sth Australian outback after a torrential downpour (10 inches of rain in 3 hrs)... As I type this, the TV news is reporting an emergency declaration has been made in Sth Australia due to extensive flooding over thousands of square kilometres. Two weeks ago the vehicle was being tested there in typica ldry dusty conditions where "bull dust" as fine a talcium powder is an every day hazard. The window and door seals stood up very well...there was little evidence dust inside anywhere today. Having travelled extensively in these conditions it can take literally years to rid a vehicle of the typical red dust... so they didn't have time to valet the vehicle!!! From South Australia it was driven over 2,000km to the Sth East Queensland Adventure Park (a large property developed for camping/4wd tracks...) So were were very lucky it was not marooned in the outback floods! First up: For anyone experienced in automotive development, a prototype open for up-close public view is virtually unheard of!! The switches etc under the LED screen were all 3D printed for layout purposes. The test vehicle bumpers are some type of composite/heavy duty plastic...(I note the UK Patent Office has just published the provisional specs for the Ineos "Multi-part Metal bumper"...which will be incorporated into production...). The roof "gutter" was heavy duty plastic--it's a rain gutter... if you want to tie stuff down, there are heavy duty bars on each side. The vehicle was equipped with M/T (BFGs) on 17" steel wheels. There was NO "Ineos" duct tape! (LOL) One of the Ineos team said that the factory is gearing up to produce a run of "production" vehicles which prospective customers will be able to test drive. Impressions: No sound deadening appeared to have been installed as such. Even so, it's comparatively quiet. The front and rear seats are very comfortable: over rocky terrain and potholed track, the long travel suspension absorbs the jarring very well. What was surprising was the manner in which the rebound from the seats was in sync with the suspension to smooth out the ride... this is not always the case in other vehicles. The power delivery from the BMW B57 inline 6cyl diesel via the 8sp auto was "linear" and very smooth. There was some talk about the "ferry" trip to get the vehicle to Qld on time for the demo days given it had been held up in Sth Australia. I asked about fuel consumption... they were coy but said where the driver had filled the tank then "topped it up". Given the tank is supposedly 90 litres, I won't start a rumour :-), but unloaded and obeying the speed limits on the open highway... note for this trip ..."highway" is NOT "motorway" standard, let's say the range was comfortably in excess of 1000km (600miles) with a small reserve. I'm glad I made the trip... there has been extensive interest. Nothing I saw or heard has dented my initial enthusiasm ...I'm looking forward, like many, many others to actually driving it and hopefully parking one in my driveway!!

Great work lads, Thankyou for you’re efforts. Yes what did they say about that hose hanging out of the transmission? I was like WTF is that ? Hopefully that is re-routed somehow. The other thing that alarmed me is 90 litre fuel tank. That’s a big one here in Australia. I’m just in the process of organising my LC 78 Troopy build & Ive torn the 90 litre out of the rear of it & it’s being replaced with a 185, giving me 275 litres in total. My last build had 255 litres. In Australia (the land of shithouse diesel) I need fuel capacity & it’s always nice for underbody space for water tanks…..preferably more than 1. Big distances to cover & Id rather not buy fuel in some of the remote places where the quality is questionable. The other things that concern me, are BMW engine & Box 🤮 ….. I know it’s been around for years but BMW & reliability hardly go hand in hand AND again it might not be an issue for you guys when there’s a break down but if you break down in the Simpson Desert or halfway along the Canning Stock Route the recovery trucks won’t even leave their base until you wire them $10,000 …… so yeah. 🥴 My final concern is the made in France thing 😂 about the only reliable thing I’ve known to come out of France was a little French Sheila I was slotting about 30 years ago, let me tell you, her build quality was fine as…….but that’s a story for around a camp fire & a few ale’s 😂 Very interested about the Hydrogen engine option which is coming 👍👍👍👍 Overall, it’s going to be a cheaper tourer (overlander) than my 78 Troopy…….depending on how many mods need to be made to it.
@africaoverland
@africaoverland 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry we forgot to ask about the pipe at the bottom. As for fuel tank size, it is pretty much Industry standard. Nothing really can compare to a Land Cruiser 78 with its abundant space under the carriage. Tim (@troopyinafrica) as you could see from the video has a Landcruiser 78 and it’s 180 L fuel tank is more than sufficient for most of the places we travel in Africa. Canning Stock & Simpson as I understand it are extreme even for Oz. So just we would just carry extra fuel like we did for Koakland in the north of Namibia. BMW we’ll time will tell. France 🇫🇷 well again time will tell. Cheaper Hmmm 🤔 not so certain about cheaper than 78? The roof conversion I suspect will be more than the AluCab Hercules and then there is the suspension loading etc etc All those lovely things we worry about will be re-engineered for this one - it’s a 4x4 after all. After market is what they aiming it at.
@GR8Tmate
@GR8Tmate 2 жыл бұрын
@@africaoverland Re: Australian Diesel and fuel capacity. Simpson desert by its shortest route is only about 500km (measuring from Mt Dare Station to Birdsville). 180 litres is more than ample for that & fuel quality at both Birdsville & Mt Dare has always been good (as far as I’m aware). For me the desire to have a larger capacity than that allows me to bypass places where fuel quality concerns me. With the Toyota VDJ 4.5 litre V8, it’s somewhat reliant on good diesel & I can only imagine the German (BMW) gear would be just as fussy. I’m sure aftermarket companies will design something better than 90 litres but it would have been good to see Ineos to have provided options in that area for different markets. It would seem they’ve tried to provide a vehicle (stock) that needs less of it cut off & replaced with aftermarket accessories. It’s very easy to spend $180k AUD on a Troopy if you coil convert/Correct rear track/GVM plus do the Alucab Hercules. The 2 seat IG converted & set up is probably going to cost less than that $180k & it’s got comforts the Troopy might never achieve 😂. (An Auto conversion on the 78 is going to add almost another $30k to that $180k & that’s where I’m almost certain the IG will come in as a cheaper option.). The million dollar question, will be reliability, for sure 👍

We can get at special deallera lc70 v6 patrol but it uses so mutch patrol that is way to exspensive , g class is a sport car here and jeep has to low gvm. (New defender is stupid wo will buy that). hat happens when it breaks down - you can get toyota parts all over africa - but how about the parts for an Ineos Grenadier -- the Land Rover ran out because parts were tough to source -- every safari vehicle I saw was either a converted Hilux or Landcruiser.. That said it looks very rugged and has a higher ground clearance than the normal Land Cruiser. I would want it with the Steel side protectors/step - And I agree it needs underbody skid plates and protection for all things -- pipes, drains, hoses, and the drive shaft -- that can catch or be bashed. I did not see a winch - front or rear - both are essential. Needs Cooper tyres. nI would like to see a video/camera mounted on the exterior channels. AND understand how easy it is to remove a door. Sun roof need to open fully so we can shoot photos standing on the seats - glass roofs are a problem.

@@africaoverland I think he dodged a bullet there. The fact that they don't let anyone but their drivers drive the Grenadier and they always start any presentation with 'don't worry too much about the fit and finish etc, it's only a prototype' sticks up some red flags for me. I certainly wouldn't be an early adopter of this vehicle personally. I think getting spares for these in the areas they're expecting them to be used may be an issue. I do a fair bit of dirt road driving, I had two 4.2 non-turbo troopys (1HZ?) from new over 7 years doing hundreds of kilometers per day on dirt in the Oz outback. Neither let me down, I can't recall a single issue with either of them. These days I drive a Toyota Prado on dirt regularly and have never had an issue with it after 335k kms. Apparently Ineos are already into this project for something like 650 million UK pounds. So they're going to have sell quite a few aren't they.

@@spudboy1328 Fair enough, I’ve only ever heard people rave about parabolic suspension but I’ve never tried it. I’ve tried a few different things with my past Troopcarriers and have decided that I’m going to coil concert my new one as it will be the last one I set up. I had also thought about going all out & dropping a 200 series gearbox in it, just because I’m old and deserve to rest my weary old bones. I have no doubt the engine/gearbox combo is smooth, it’s been around a while & has been tried and tested, my only concern would be longevity. My last LC now has over 600,000km on it & it’s new owner is still roaming. If I’ve got 20 years left (which I probably don’t) then I just want to roam & service, not screw around with engine & gearbox rebuilds. What I think is attractive about the IG is it would seem you could buy one & have it set up in a few weeks as opposed to what I’m faced with doing with my new 78…..which is basically disassemble & reassemble it again before I can travel. My last build took me the best part of 6 months. It’s tiring, wasteful & expensive. The Coil converted Troopy is such a nice creature but I’m guessing the IG will be more comfortable again. I also like the sound of the new power plant but I’m running out of time, do I guess I will never get the chance to tour via hydrogen, it sounds interesting never the less. 👍

Land Rover had the perfect opportunity to modernise and improve the old Defender, but instead they gave us a mini Range Rover. All it will do is cannibalise sales from Discovery and Range Rover Sport. And if the INEOS is a good reliable workhorse, then I don't think anyone will care where it is made. It's not like the British automotive industry is the pinnacle of anything in particular.
