I had paid a reservation fee to reserve a Grenadier (as an early bird follower) but have decided to cancel. I'm just disappointed in the poor payload given the hype and INEOS not dissuading all the forums when discussing a possible 1000kg payload throughout the RD phase. If it had come with 1000kg payload or close to it, I would be signing a contract. Let’s take emotion out of it and just do the Math. Grenadier Trailmaster (90% fuel capacity, all liquids, no occupants) 689kg payload as per recent published spec sheet. I want to tow a 3500kg caravan, which is what the Grenadier is rated for. Standard rule for working out tow ball weight is 10% of ATM = 350kg Take 350kg from payload of 689kg leaves me with 339kg payload Be kind and put only two occupants in vehicle (too bad if you have kids) my case, wife and I = 170kg 339kg - 170kg = 169kg payload left Only a 90ltr fuel tank in Grenadier which doesn’t work in Australia overlanding so either jerry cans or long-range fuel tank (another 90ltr to carry plus extra ad blu) let’s say 120kg. 169kg - 120 kg = 49kg Now add on a winch - whoops! I can’t as that will overload me. But a winch is a must have in Australia’s outback. Then, if I want my bulbar (also a must in Australia) roof rack, recovery gear, tools/safety equip, Draw system to hold equip, canopy and any other basic accessories it’s not possible. I would have to go down the path of a costly GVM upgrade (which will require engineering, testing, and certification by some third-party company down the track). My hope is INEOS will make changes in future models, (maybe the dual cab utility) where you can have the Trailmaster features with a 1000kg payload with proper size fuel tank (180ltr) so you can tow a 3500kg caravan, with necessary accessories, across Australia’s unforgiving outback. Wasn’t that what it was supposed to be - A Utilitarian 4 x 4 that you can ‘Load up’ - ‘Tow with’ for go anywhere off roading? I believe if Grenadier were to meet the above payload and fuel capacity, sales would skyrocket as they would become a class leader and not just another option. I’ll wait and hope.

Excellent write-up, Kevin, and good point too! I would wait a couple of years for Ineos to iron out any issues in the first place, and secondly to give them the time to hear what people like you have to say. Hopefully we will indeed see something able to live up to your expectations, which I fully agree with.

This is very Australian specific critique. In America, we have gas stations everywhere so range isn’t an issue. Payload is also very acceptable in my opinion. I do wish both the tank size and payload were bigger, but unless you’re planning to do canning stock route, it’s fine. What matters the most is reliability.

Indeed. It seems over-engineered, which is nice. Factory options include lockable diffs, among other interesting things. They are even thinking ahead of the aftermarket parts manufacturers, which is unusual (and a great thing to be doing, I think).

@@gmcevoy now that is strange the company taking care of aftermarket parts. Maybe the RC companies could learn something. Locking diffs nice TRX4 action right there haha. Great vehicle something away from the norm

The Grenadier looks great on paper but this is very tame off roading. I would like to see it drive bog holes and steep ascents in rough terrain.

Agreed. I have had a chat with some of the tech nerds on-site, and apparently there will be the possibility to get front and rear lockers as an optional extra. A winch bumper and snorkel will also be available from the options catalogue. Add an aftermarket 3 inch lift to that with a set of bead-lock wheels, and you should be ready to go through the 1000 dollar track in a breeze. At any rate, I would wait for a test-drive myself (these are still prototypes which are not allowed to be driven by the public yet), and probably a couple of years so they can iron out any issues that arise, before signing an order form. I was also told that they have a top-notch aftermarket service to cater for the recalls (which will definitely happen), but still, I would wait a couple more years to avoid the hassle.

These are very basic valuable prototypes wouldn’t do to damage one !

@@AJ-qn6gd Agreed, still lots of finishing touches to be made. Actually, breaking prototypes is valuable information for research and development. I believe they are past this stage however, given that they are confident enough to show it to the public.

Agreed! So do I! This vehicle is in the late prototyping stage, so the public is not yet allowed to take the wheel. I can't wait until receiving the invitation for an actual test drive!
