Back in the driver's seat for some off roading, rather tame mind you. I am totally uncomfortable and inexperienced, but I try my best. Hop in with me for a bit of a drive and look at how others tackle hardcore driving lines in the forest, at the wheel of some truly mean machines!

Great vehicle. Don't be scared or worried. When you are out of your comfort zone, the Pinzgauer starts to warm up. Once you found out, what this car is capable of, you will surely never ever sell it. And some branches? You don't need to cut these twiggs to make a path for a Pinzgauer, unless it's a "shopping-mall-show-car". When driving this Pinzgauer "species-appropriate ", the car will make it's way trough twiggs and bushes. This Pinzgauer is one of the Top 5 vehicles you can get for going offroad.

Absolutely agree. And I already don't want to ever sell it. There is a bit of metal work to be done, and I would ultimately like to get the body off to get it blasted and epoxy coated. But that is in theory. In practice it is another story. My wallet is too thin for that now. But I will surely keep it and patch it up as I go. It needs new tyres too, I think that will be the next upgrade it gets. Any recommendations? I am considering BF Goodrich KM3 for mud terrain, but I am open to options.

Totally agree. It took me a while to realise that the Pinz greatest attribute is it’s ability to go where other off-roaders can, but at 3 times the speed. At slow speeds, the independent suspension can be a little tottery. Hit the same obstacle at 20mph and all of a sudden the suspension comes alive.

Hey Geoffrey, thanks for the offroad excitement with your Pinzgaurer!!! Really great your enjoying a bit of trail time after all the hard work put into it. You & the Pinz handled the trails well! As I'm finding out with mine it's so different in awesome ways compared to other 4x4s I've driven. Nothing compares actually. So much fun offroad but can still get into trouble if not careful. As you probably know should get a good winch sometime. Excellent footage as always!!! Also enjoyed watching some of the other amazing vehicles out with you. Thanks for the outstanding content & that tip with your water container! Will be doing that!!! Cool RC wheeler!!!! Till next time....keep the levers down & the roof side up!!! Best.....Bob V

Alright Bob! Many thanks! I am still experiencing brake issues, which I think has something to do with the static pressure valves not working properly. They are the only thing that I have not renewed in the system (save for the front shoes, of which the right are caked in gear oil which doesn't help, for sure). I am definitely on the lookout for a 24V winch. I have managed to find a support bracket for it, which I need to weld together. Sourcing a capable winch is more complicated than I thought. I really need something that I can rely on. If you have any recommendations, I am all ears. This being said, this is very tame off-roading (nothing like those nutjobs ripping with their racing rigs! Wasn't that something? Haha). I need to buy some decent tyres first, then I will dare to tackle more challenging paths. I walked a good deal that weekend, and there are areas which look really interesting to try. Better tyres will help, and being self-sufficient with a winch would be fantastic. One last thing to give me all the confidence in the world would be to build an exo-cage. Then I would be ready for pretty much anything. One thing at a time though, I first have to sort out some rust that I have found on the rear wheel arches. Panels are available and will be purchased in due course. More to come, at any rate! Always a pleasure to hear from you, Bob, and I am glad you enjoyed the show.

@@gmcevoy Walking trails first is a very good habit to get into. I was out in mine a couple of weeks ago and ended up in must go uncomfortable situations. The vehicle & I made it through but learned my lesson to be more careful. Especially being several hours from help. Like you, my list of must fix & wants for this vehicle just keeps growing. As I drive more I discover more. Dealing with a rear differential leak now. Doing what I can when I can but still really enjoying this incredible vehicle! @@bobv7753 Great to hear that you came out unscathed. Lesson learned! I also do what I can when I can, and I am currently trying to find a place where I can put it indoors for the Winter. Right now, the added rear windows are leaking like mad. It literally rains inside it, which makes matters worse. I found one of the last new flank panels for the left hand side. I would probably convert the right one into a useful hatch to put recovery gear inside. Not sure yet, but something has to be done. I would like to take the roof off to be able to do that. And it needs a respray... And the list goes on and on, as you so rightfully say. What are we to do, with so little free time? :-) Ah, we'll see. My priorities for now are 1, sort out rust. 2, new tyres. 3 enjoy for a bit. Then next Winter maybe rebuild front portals? All depends on how much I can put into it until then. Hehe

@@gmcevoy Getting inside is really needed with this vehicle. I'm in a small garage limiting what I can do but helps preserve it. Like yours mine leaks big time. Was told by many that most original vintage Pinzgaurers do. I've been slowly sealing it. Even considering Raptor lining the entire exterior to help protect & seal it. Still researching this but seriously considering it. Have to pace yourself. It's great having your repair content. This as you know is hard to find. Hi! Night runs are awesome. I don't have good enough camera gear to make it look good in a video. But it is good fun. The LED headlight conversion makes a world of difference, and the light bar sets the world alight. Sadly, I have to part with it, so let me know if it might be of interest to you. Regarding the auxiliary heater, I took it out as it was occupying otherwise useful space behind the driver seat. I still have it though.

Thank you! No I haven't! Where can I find one? I have been trying to identify this one, but the last two digits have rubbed off, and I know for sure the diaphragm is punctured. I searched for hours to no avail. Found similarities with an Opel fitment, but not sure at all whether compatible or not, so I just left it at that. If I can lay my hands on one, I would be so happy. That and the static pressure valves still need changing. Get some Lev-o-gauges, (cheap inclinometer) I believe the Pinzy can do 35 deg side slope and straight inclines to the limit of traction. Double check, it's in the brochure. You really only need lockers when a wheel is lifting or in very soft surfaces like sand or mud also comforting when climbing a very steep obstacle. Usually rear alone will suffice. 4x4 I would use constantly on dirt as is protects the track as quick as much as it provides stability. If you've not got the split rims you can go down to 1bar no problems.
@gmcevoy
@gmcevoy Жыл бұрын
As low as 1 bar, really!? Wow! I think I will dare to try next time. Must definitely get the lev-o-gauge, it should help grow my confidence. I really need to get used to that strange feeling, it genuinely makes me uncomfortable. What I do need as well sooner than later is a set of new tyres. Any recommendations? I was very happy with the BF Goodrich KM3's that I had bought for my Land Rover Discovery, but I am not sure they will do in this application, even though mud terrain will be the most often encountered. Road noise is not an issue, as I wear ear muffs while on the black top anyway. I would also consider bead locks, but they are crazy expensive from what I gather.
@DriftaholiC
@DriftaholiC Жыл бұрын
I've only had BFG myself and never suffered a puncture. I believe only the mud terrain come in 255/85/16 which I think is the size on the Pinzgauer. I've heard good things about Toyo, Falken, Federal and Nitto but haven't personally tried them.

People should not use a tow hook to winch or tow out other vehicles, it is dangerous, and each year people get killed by failing tow hooks. They are rated for towing trailers at a flat surface without any substantial rolling resistance, they are not rated for shock loads that exceed their towing capacity. So what happens is that they fail during a shock load, and they will catapult towards the vehicle that is being towed, often flying through the front window injuring or even killing the driver inside the towed vehicle. It is truly dangerous. It is much safer to use dedicated towing points that are rated for shock loads.
@gmcevoy
@gmcevoy Жыл бұрын
For sure. These people are cowboys. Still, this was tame. If you hang around for long enough, you get to see the most ridiculous things, like the "spotter" standing in between the car and a tree right next to the winch rope, people pulling and shock loading in reverse, and so on to name just a couple of stupid things. It is always a good laugh. Actually, I should do a show about how not to drive off road. Tons of examples there. lol
