i'm curious if this inflation forming technique could make use of a mold to shape metal into more dynamic, detailed shapes. sortof a reverse vacuum forming.

Definitely, Hydroforming is an industrial process used for shaping car panels, bike frames and tubes

Can't believe how well that works! Very cool :) What sheet thickness is that? Also, did you see how much pressure was needed?
@ConnorHolland
@ConnorHolland Жыл бұрын
Thank you, it is 0.9mm thick stainless steel which took around 30psi maximum to inflate

It looks super cool and i appreciate the custom work out into it.... But if it expeanded that easy the first bump with a knee or sliding a chair into it would really dent it easy ... Id be afraid of how delicate this is..... Again its beautiful 😍 nive work

No need to worry, inflated steel is very strong and I would need to hit it hard with a hammer to dent it

What's your polishing process? Would be interested in what disc you use and how many steps you do for getting a mirror finish on stainless steel, beautiful stuff
@ConnorHolland
@ConnorHolland Жыл бұрын
I dislike sanding so I do it the fast way, that looks ok but its not a perfect mirror. I smooth the welds with a 40g flap disc on the angle grinder, 100g sandpaper, then the sisal wheel on the polishing machine and the cloth wheel to finish up. When I can I go straight to the polishing machine to avoid any sanding, its not really the 'correct way'.

So you have an air compressor to run the plasma but you use a bike pump to inflate the sheet metal ?

Nice. I just subed after watching a video you made love the idea of using air and a pressure washer to shape this. What welder are you using can you share a direct link to it if possible I'm looking to get a tig myself. Maybe if you haven't already you can make a video of all the shop tools you use to make these and what you like best to use and maybe add links to where to get them. I always wanted to get some of these tool myself to make some cool art pieces. Keep the videos coming.

Wow, that's an interesting KZfaq channel I just stumbled upon, very coll stuff! Is there specific software to predict the final hydroformed shape? Seems you could make good use of a metal laser cutter. I just completed my first metal-laser cutting project at my local makerspace and am amazed at how easy the machine and software was to use.
@ConnorHolland
@ConnorHolland Жыл бұрын
Some CAD programs let you 'inflate' a model, I've used Blender to do this reasonably well. It's mostly physical experiments with different shapes that help me predict what will happen. I would definitely like a laser cutter, perhaps in the future

@@ConnorHolland Yes do that. I have used hollow steel balls in a few of my projects. They are somewhat coarse with a wide seam that is even more coarse. Its a slow labor process to get a decent reflective finish so I'm interested on how you solve the problem. Thanks.

Looks good. Sorry I'm going to say it... Colinfurze done this aswell but he used water. Compressing air is dangerous as air can be compressed. Water won't exposed like air... But nice project.
