Nice how you notice glimpses of horror in many Bergman films besides these two, he seems to be interested in aspects of the horror genre

A director so interested in bleak topics will naturally lean into those horrific tones. When making this video, it became clear that you could argue several of his films are horror-adjacent

What a fantastic essay on two fantastic movies! I should really get back to Bergman, what a master of the artform!

Ingmar Bergman was a lover of horror fiction and movies. There are explicit references to the 19th century German horror author ETA Hoffmann in The Hour of the Wolf and Fanny and Alexander -- he even talked about it in interviews. The Serpent's Egg, The Magician, The Seventh Seal -- there are horror movie references galore. And Through Glass Darkly, it is not only a horrific depiction of schizophrenia in itself, but the obvious source of inspiration for Polanski's Repulsion four years later.

I remember reading in his memoir The Magic Lantern how much he loved art that's specifically scary and anxiety-inducing

@@creativedestructionvideo Yes, his inspiration from horror fiction (literature and movies) is so obvious for movie lovers in general, but in Sweden it is almost never mentioned. The cultural life in Sweden is very snobbish, and it is regarded as embarrassing for such a "highbrow" artist to be inspired by the horror genre. The natural result of this is that they can never fully understand such a movie as The Hour of the Wolf, which is pure neo-gothic filmmaking.

Loved the hour of the Wolf, it can be seen as a a24 evevated horror type from the 60s. If you like the witch or The lighthouse, give it a watch

Totally. Rob Eggers & Ari Aster did a long discussion centered on Bergman on the a24 podcast. His influence can be seen all over their films.

Hmm good advice. I always like Bergman but have never heard of that film. I have homework for the week!
