This is a heart wrenching story of baby elephant calf searching milk from dying elephant mother.
The villagers noticed an emaciated elephant mother and a baby elephant staying near a small river located near the border of the forest from few days. The elephant mother was very thin and unhealthy looking. She may have come out of the forest looking for some help from people. But she has fallen in to the ground with no energy remaining in the body. So the villagers informed the wildlife officers about the distressed elephant.
The wildlife officers found that the mouth of the elephant mother has severely damaged from a jaw exploding trap. That should be the reason for her severe weakness in the body. The wildlife officers didn’t give up, they tried their best to save the treasured elephant. They start treating her. They gave saline to the elephant to aid her to regain the lost energy. They gave antibiotic too. But all were in vain! They were too late to find her. They could treat her only for two days.
The elephant might have starving in the forest from long period. As she was unable to eat food as her mouth has been shattered by jaw exploder. Day by day this deadly hazard of explosive bait is increasingly maiming the innocent elephant. During the last two months we found 8 cases of mouth injured elephants who have become victims from explosive bait. The explosives are hidden inside a food cover for the purpose of hunting wild boars. But unfortunately the vulnerable elephants also crippled with this barbaric traps increasingly.
The elephant mother is laying to death. Her innocent tender baby couldn’t figure out what is going to happen. He don’t know his mother is at her last stage of life. He is seeking the warmth of mother. Poor baby suckles milk from the dying mother. Destitute elephant mother who was in pain and weakened with starvation still caring about her baby. It brought tears to everybody’s eyes who the destitute elephant mother lift her leg for letting her baby to suckle milk. It was really a heartbreaking scene. She was caring her baby until her final breath, proving that mothers love never dies. A mother’s love for her baby is like nothing else in the world. This is true to elephants as well for the humans. How miserable this poor mother is? She may have worried a lot about her baby even at her final breath. Finally the poor animal passed away losing all the hopes of wildlife officers and leaving alone her little baby in the world.
The poor little thing still don’t know his mother has passed away. He may think that mother is in a deep sleep. The baby kept nudging its mother with trunk and still trying to suckle the milk searching the warmth from his beloved mother.
The crowd gathered were deeply moved with the sight of innocent baby elephant. One compassionate officer tried to feed the baby with bottled milk. Finally amidst the mournful sighs of the gathering the villagers and wildlife officers buried the death body of poor elephant mother. Poor baby deprived his mother due to a barbaric act of human. The wildlife officers carried the lone baby elephant to an elephant orphanage home. The staff in the orphanage home is dedicated to look after the orphaned baby elephant. The poor baby will be nurtured and looked after there until the maturity. When the baby elephant reach to a stage that he can survive alone they’ll release him back to the forest.
