Suminagashi is a traditional Japanese marbling technique that is used to create unique and beautiful patterns on paper or fabric. The word "suminagashi" translates to "floating ink" in English, which aptly describes the process involved.
Here's a brief overview of how suminagashi works:
Ink Preparation: Suminagashi typically involves the use of very diluted ink or paint. Traditionally, sumi ink, which is a black ink used in calligraphy, is used. The ink is carefully mixed with water to create a very thin, watery consistency.
Water Basin: A shallow tray or basin filled with water is prepared. The water should be still, clean, and at room temperature.
Ink Floating: A few drops of the diluted ink are carefully dropped onto the surface of the water. The ink spreads out and forms intricate patterns as it floats on the water's surface. These patterns are the essence of suminagashi art.
Manipulation: The artist can gently blow on the ink to create movement and guide the patterns. They can also use a variety of tools, such as brushes or combs, to manipulate the ink and create specific designs.
Paper or Fabric Printing: Once the desired pattern is achieved, a piece of paper or fabric is carefully placed onto the water's surface, allowing it to absorb the ink pattern. The paper or fabric is then lifted, revealing the marbled design.
Suminagashi is known for its serendipitous and unpredictable nature, as the patterns created are often a result of chance and the way the ink behaves on the water's surface. It's a meditative and artistic practice that has been used for centuries in Japan to create decorative papers for various purposes, including bookbinding, calligraphy, and artwork.
In recent years, suminagashi has gained popularity as a creative and therapeutic art form worldwide, and artists often experiment with different colors of ink and techniques to create their own unique variations of this traditional marbling method.

Hello! what kind of ink do you use? I used marbling ink and it doesn't flow well and makes thin lines, then I used calligraphy ink but it sinks right away.
