It doesn't feel right to call this just a "fucked up situation" because it's obviously much more than that - Ricky was clearly set-up to die by the corrections officers. They put him in a cell with a prisoner who might as well have "weapon" tattooed on his forehead for how predictable he is, then IGNORED the 28 people calling for help for him, then they covered it up by handling the "investigation" themselves. The thing about taking away the life-support without alerting the family is just inhuman, and the fact that the COs all got promotions instead of prison sentences speaks VOLUMES about the state of Florida's prisons. It would take a frightening amount of corruption to cover this up like they did; dozens of people must be involved, or at least knew about it but looked the other way. Absolutely despicable behavior from the Florida Department of Corrections.

The truly frightening thing is that this could happen in any state. The US has no ultimate semblance for justice. This could just as easily have been an innocent man

It's possible they sent Martin to die in that cell on purpose, but I don't think they did. Cops don't care enough to put a hit on a random white "troublemaker" inmate, when they're dealing with hundreds alike him. I believe it's all due to complete disregard and indifference towards human life on the cops part. It's really telling that they gassed and chained Martin before taking out of the cell when he was already laying brain dead in there. They don't care!!

My brother was in prison for 7 years. There were a few inmates that noticed he always had money on his books. So they started forcing him to call us and extort us for money or they would harm. We tried to call and let them know what was happening, but they didnt care. Nothing was ever done. Glad he made it out safely.

Was down Bayside in 2017 and dude, a cool good vibes kid who was in the cell next to mine got a new bunkie named "champ", who then quickly proceeded to disrespect him and steal his trays, his commissary, and his personal belongings. The victim was a very patient, very self-controlled dude. He managed to take the abuse for a whole week while he acquired the right tool, made sure it was ready to go, and then around 2am slashed the total shit out of champs face and poked him up in the sides. I dont know what happened to dude, but I saw champ at another prison a year later and he had crutches and a colostomy bag.

I dont agree with the idea that drug offenses (specifically trafficking) are non violent. The most horrid crimes are commited over drugs & lets be real, that stuff destroys lives and communities. That being said Im not opposed to users (simple possesion, petty theft etc) being given a second chance or incarcerated in less harsh conditions, but dealers & suppliers are another story. They can sling h or rock for years, introduce kids to that stuff, encourage addicts to break the law or do dirty work for them, so they can hang with the killers & gangbangers.

@@dosidicusgigas1376 That is a statement that is trifling with naivety. Someone will always sell drugs, because there is a huge demand. You also want to lock up all cigarette manifacteurers and trafficants? All bar keeps? Those are drugs too and especially alcohol leads to many horrific deaths eatch day. And no alcohol is not less hard that H or C. It is actually harder, just usually consumed in a way more tame way. Oral consumption is the least effective one, compared to smoking or injecting. If you did alcohol like that you would die so much quicker. Seriously can we stop thinking that pushing out harsh punishments solves anything? It is useless, that much has been proven time and time again in the war on drugs. Taking a hold of production and selling, yes the state should sell the drugs, that would protect us from stuff being cut with Fentanyl etc. and it would always give consumers an idea how much they are consuming. That together goes really really well with free monthly social workers, psychologists, psycho therapists and doctor visits. That is actually tackling the problem where it matters. In this modell the cartells and gangs suddenly make no money because they can't compete with legit sellers, we will have casual users who don't have a problem (same with alcohol) and anyone who is a problematic user has access to tons of help and safety nets. But no I guess hurr durr punishments will work. Because it has been effective as a deterrent and has eliminated our drug problems. Why trust scienttific data and research when we can just trust Bumper stickers!

Truly a crazy situation that could have and should have never happened. Unfortunately, as a former correction officer I know all too well how corrupt the guards can be. They absolutely hold grudges and will break any and all rules to " teach an inmate a lesson" especially if they know they can get away with it. It's a sad reality. It's always the inmates word vs the guards words and we know how that ends. The main thing people need to understand and take from this incident is DO NOT GET LOCKED UP!! Easier said than done but seriously, DONT GO TO PRISON! There are no rules! There is no boundaries that won't be crossed either by other inmates or the guards themselves. IT IS NOT WORTH IT! Trust me, you would rather live poor and be homeless for life rather than be in prison for however long. It is not cool, you don't get stripes, you don't get love and you damn sure don't get any prizes for being locked up. All you will get is the possibility to not come home and instead leave in a bag. Think before you do something dumb even if it's a small or minimal crime because you aret guaranteed to make it through your sentence

When I signed my 10 year plea deal with 5 to serve I experienced some similar stuff. I had a couple of real strange bunk mates while waiting sentencing at the intake center. One guy was in there for drug trafficking, but was under an investigation for the murder of a police officer. He told some snitch in the prison they’ll never find the officer because he’s buried under his house. Of course the snitch reaches out to his attorney who then talks to the AG. After a full search of the property a body was found in which turned out to be the police officer. The inmate was indicted for the murder and then hung himself from his top bunk after the last count that night. His roommate woke up to the body hanging in front of his bed by a sheet.

This is why I never pushed paperwork. On inmates or COs. I wasn’t about to be put on a hit list even if multiple other inmates were submitting grievances about a particular issue. At the end of the day if he just did his time from the start laying low and fighting only when and if necessary, then maybe he wouldn’t have been transferred to this more treacherous prison. But I agree that it should be a policy about lifers separated from people with a reasonable release date. Poor guy. Stay free!

This reminds me of a famous quote by Dostoevsky... Something similar happened here in my home country of Finland couple of years ago. Bearly adult 18-19yo guy who had some learning disabilities got sent to prison and in the first few weeks he was in a 6 man "travel cell" which is where you'll spend the first weeks. One guy started beating on him and the next day got his friend moved to the same cell, they tortured him brutally for 3 days streight, beating, burning, suffocating, making him drink boiling water etc and they even rap*d him in the bathroom a few times and at the end they suffocated him with a plastic bag and told the guards after eating breakfast next to the body, that he killed himself. The guards 100% knew about it and did nothing and didn't get punished. The other guys just had to watch them do that, because being a snitch is one of the worst sins here too and didn't want that to happen to them. Finland is more known for humane treatment of prisoners, but sick shit happens everywhere.

Absolutely horrible! I feel so bad for the young man who lost his life which could have been totally avoided and I feel bad for his daughters who lost their dad. I used to be a CO in a maximum security prison. I went through the boot camp which teaches you everything about guns, codes that we would use for writing up inmates and self defense training. I was trained on how to take a grown man down really fast. I only worked in the prison for around six weeks and I quit because I didn’t like being in a man’s maximum security prison located in Texas. Most of all, I didn’t like how the guards were towards inmates and I honestly was scared shitless. The CO’s were told when we were hired that we need to appreciate our jobs because the prisons belong to the inmates and they are just letting us work there.

I’m a native lifelong resident of Florida and I was a juvenile delinquent and in my early 20s was arrested a couple times and did 8 months classified as a violent offender and did my time with violent offenders. Now in my mid 40s I haven’t been arrested since my early 20s , not even a traffic ticket since 08 . But I grew up in the hood and so I was routinely dealing with career criminals, Dope , violence just going about my day and because of my surroundings a situations . I’ve had a lot of interactions with law enforcement. Unless you have lived in Florida for years and have had your boots on the ground. There’s no way for you to really understand that Florida law enforcement is a totally different animal. Florida Is a beautiful state and I love it . But I stay on my toes with my head on a swivel because Florida law enforcement has always had full unquestionable support of Government. But ! It’s getting much worse. And Ive been telling people in comments for a few years now, that is was going to get worse and the reasons why. And just a few weeks ago a saw a story in the news talking about the very thing I’ve been saying was going to happen. Florida is aggressively recruiting law enforcement from across the country and the bulk of them have criminal records or serious issues with their conduct as officers that lead to them being terminated in their respective states. Florida doesn’t have much concern for these officers records, because Florida Governments mindset on recruiting these cops with serious issues is that these are officers who were unfairly targeted by extreme liberal policies against law enforcement when they were just trying to do their job . And word has spread that Florida is a place where cops can operate like it’s still the Wild West . A place where they can operate like they all could in the good old days. Total unquestionable power and support of all Florida Government agencies. If your dream job is being a career criminal. Don’t come to Florida because they hand out felonies and serious indictments like they are traffic tickets and even on minor crimes they treat you like you’re El Chapo. If their focus was on true violent crimes or crimes where their is a actual victim that would be one thing I think most people would support because I don’t want my family to live in conditions like we see in Chicago etc . If you’re robbing people and sht then you need to pay the price and get your life right. But Florida will pull you into their system and treat you like a worthless human being undeserving of redemption or even basic human decency over the dumbest and most minor sht. Florida is a Police State and they like that reputation, they are proud of that reputation and they don’t try to hide it at all

Interesting thank you. I was a Corrections Officer, and you Re absolutely correct when you say the public doesn't really know what really goes on at times.

Aye bro I've been on the fifth floor watching the pod (23&1) for a while. And now I think it's time to speak. I've been in and out of lock up since 81 and graciously that path ended in 2005. I was a recidivist for many years starting as an adolescent. I've visited many jails like Texas, Florida, Maine, Georgia, California and more. I've done a few over nighters all over the states but nothing really worth the effort. My longest bid was 93-99 and I did a nickel in between rikers and sing-sing. Even did a shady 5 months in Fayetteville county out in PA. Spent a week in Rita out in Cali. And thankfully, luckily I haven't seen a jail since PA(05). Was wondering how long the interview waiting list is? What's the process for getting on that gig?

This is crazy, I was at Lake Butler RC with Ricky.. He was good kid, I’m blown away by this. Me and Ricky had some great times in prison drinking chain gang liquor. I got out 2020. I’m in tears he only had 6 months left. RIP Ricky. You were loyal brother.😢

Man I'm glad I changed my life around and stopped going to prison!!!! Took me 15 yrs to learn my lesson seen a hell of a lot of crazy things in Indiana dept of corrections. Murders, stabbings, rape, fights, riots, guards fighting, guards getting in bed with inmates!!! I mean I could go on and on. I see videos like this and thank God I was blessed enough to never join a gang or get myself in this kind of situation. But as many maximum security prisons and blocks I went to it could have happened to me just cause I get a shitty bunkie. But by God's grace I grew out of it and been sober and crime free for many years now and I ain't never goin back. Hell I go back at least once a week in my dreams. Still!!!

We really need to completely change our prison systems . Prisons in certain parts of Asia have zero stabbings or violence . All movement is controlled, and everyone is required to go to classes all day .

The people who need to watch this video full of horrible information of what happened will most likely will never see it. That's why men are lining up to get into prison. Sad, really sad; Thanks for sharing. To bad Ricky didn't stop his life of criminality and make some kind of assessment. Thanks for Posting.

Ive been in jail several times. As well as prison. This happens all the time with guards putting people together they know will be at each others throats. They watch it on TV like a movie. They admitted it apparently

I used to work a detention center. We had plenty of people that killed other people. And, it’s true… I never put one of those guys with a larceny charge guy. Why? To me… it’s not fair. To the judicial system, the guy with a petty case is literally shark bait at that point. There’s a lot of evil people though. Even in corrections.

I could see this. I did 5 years in NW Florida for trafficking. Minimum custody. Santa Rosa is wild. I did most my time in Washington county annex and main unit and it's another one that is wild. I had to go to Lake Butler for gull bladder surgery. When I came back they stuck me at the main unit and they were over populated so I got stuck in C dorm. The guards and inmates called it the violent, gay dorm... I was the only one in there with minimum custody. Half had life the rest had 15 or more years. It was the craziest prison experience I've ever had. I was stuck there for over a year and I seen so many messed up things... finally I heard they were starting a dog program and was able to get in it and that shit was sweet lol. It was definitely an eye opener. Prison is one thing but getting stuck with lifers you see all kinds of stuff. Guy got stabbed to death in the shower and we got locked down for a couple months. Stabbings were normal.

@@sammhyde7589 lol, I don't know about that but I've got some wild stories. There was a huge black guy that had been down for 15 years. You could tell he worked out all of those years. Since they took weights away he would walk across the yard on his hands, do a set of upsidedown pushups and walk back. All without putting his feet on the ground. This guy was massive. Really soft spoken lol you wouldn't believe how he sounded. Voice definitely didn't match him. No lie, they called him Thug Passion. Ive got a couple crazy stories about him... there was so much unbelievable stuff that happened. If I didn't experience it with people I know, no one would believe it. Lol, outlandishness 🤣

I would always tell youngsters that they should never take any amount of time lightly, not even county time. It doesn't matter what your current sentence is, because any time you walk through those first doors there's a real possibility that you may never leave.
