Today Simon Mills is back on the podcast, he’s a complementary health pioneer from the inception of the term in 1979, and later in the fields of integrated health, selfcare and social prescription.
Today we talk about specific spices to start getting into your diet and why. We talk about turmeric and the potential mechanism of action in the gut, cayenne pepper, rosemary, sage, ginger and many more! As well as if spices can be prebiotics and whether they have a role in preventing diabetes and dementia.
Simon graduated from University of Cambridge with a degree in medical sciences and has been a herbal practitioner in Exeter since 1977. He was Special Adviser to the House of Lords Select Committee 2000 report on Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
In 2016 he was appointed as Herbal Strategist at Pukka Herbs, leading new initiatives, clinical research, and most recently reducing antibiotic demand which is something we touch on today.
Within herbal medicine, he established the first Masters programme in the USA, writing seminal textbooks, and publishing research including randomised controlled clinical trials.

I live in Afghanistan and we use tumeric,and all other spices daily in our food , we drink green tea daily in summer and black tea in winter . We also use tumeric in our home made toothpaste. Honey is used in home made limonade (most of the time pommegranate) . We prepare and dry vegetables and fruits in summer in the sun , so we are well prepared for winter. Here we have a kind of clay to wash our hair, and use lots of Castor oil. We are in our sixties and don't need a doctor. In winter we make tea of ginger, thyme, lemon, honey and pine needles. We are happy people, having a simple life.

I’m amazed at how I took a small pinch of thyme one day . Didn’t notice anything. It’s supposed to clear the lungs. Next day I took a bigger pinch , half a teaspoon , chewed it into a wad and swallowed it with a mouthful of water. The next day I noticed my lungs! The fullness of breath was back and every breath seemed deeper . I am really impressed with all the spices and how powerful they are!

Thank you for this very informative presentation. As a retired registered nurse, I have spent the last 45 years being unhealthy, overweight, and sometimes low energy levels after spending two years on the Indian reservations in Arizona and learning from the people there I have changed my entire concept of medicine. I am now drinking teas, making selves and tonics and tinctures, etc. I just had a full panel of blood work drawn and everything was perfect. I eat a daily soup, made with turmeric, Cayenne, okra, and multiple vegetables. I am now going to start implementing some of the things that I have learned from you. Please keep it up. Thank you.

@tumbleweeddenise, thank you for sharing that. I hear you in regards to being in health care. I share the same background as you and most definitely have began to change my ways towards health with tinctures, teas, plant based food. What started me was the guilt I felt dispensing medication knowing some were causing more harm than good, while others were to off set side effects and the list only grew longer😢. I am so happy I came across these videos, I will keep learning and growing as health is important.

An easy and tasty way to up your spice consumption is to add them to your morning coffee. I like adding turmeric, black pepper, cinnamon, allspice, ginger, cloves, and nutmeg.

In India there’s no house without turmeric. We apply when kids fall and come home mom wash and put turmeric. Marriage starts with crushing turmeric roots to apply for bride and groom.

So interesting, how different cultures have always used healing herbs. Here in the United States, it’s not part of our daily routine. I think more and more of us are waking up to these powerful herbs, such as turmeric.. I’m watching different video’s, most of them are saying to mix turmeric with milk (a fat) since this is the best way for it to be absorbed in the digestive tract. Mixing it with warm water will not supply the benefits and absorption. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.

My grandson had these little warts all over his body. The doctor gave him a steroid cream and there was no improvement and $100 wasted . I mixed a paste of turmeric and neem oil I applied it for a week and every one of the little wart growths disappeared and never came back.

I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitus several years ago and prescribed an appropriated drug medication to treat it. My body responded to the prescribed medication so my Doctor, who did his medical training in South Africa, suggested I give Curcumin ( which is the active ingredient of Turmeric) a try as an anti inflammatory. It worked wonders within 48 hours and I've been on it ever since with the only "side effect" being it also cured my diagnosed Fibromyalgia at the same time. A wonderful natural and effective alternative to Big Pharma drugs with all their devastating side effects.

Thank you very much! Though I am living in Europe originally I am from Africa. Some years back was very difficult to get many of the spices over here , I used to carry most the spices back with me when ever I travel. Nowadays there are many health store they sell every spices from all over the wold which is wonderful. Simon makes a good point: just because the research on a compound/natural med is scant, it doesn't mean it's no good etc. Follow the money. You cant patent (+ charge the NHS top dollar for) turmeric, for example. And do the pharmaceutical companies have shareholders?

I've recently started to consciously improve my probiotics but with my demanding job, I got a bit overwhelmed by by how hard it is to avoid processed foods. I just, today, discovered your channel, and I have MUCH more looking through the info that I'd like to do, but how about sprouts? Get sprouting jars, or whatever works and some seeds (they're esasy to find and sprout) to add a great fighting punch in our nutrition. ThanK you for validating the hours of research I do daily to improve mine and my husbands health. We’re in our early 70’s, love to cook, exercise as our inflamed bodies allow, we stopped alcohol recently and don’ t smoke. To be more efficient would I use equal parts (powdered) spices mixed together then take a teaspoon daily as a tea? Or is it better to have them individually

The point is the real food is the good food and people have forgotten to eat and how to prepare the real food, because the busy life stile we have has turned us into Biological Robots extremely busy and we are not having time to cook from scratch and foods industry love it as we are making them richer every year buying ready meals and other unhealthy ingredients

Also! They play a pivotal role. Garlic is the most effective antibiotic that will prevent a lot of infections. I actually cook almost everything with garlic.

The turmeric is what I would go to for relief of cancer . The spices we have in our racks are absolutely amazing in their health benefits ! I’ve been taking 2 cloves every day in the morning before eating . Just chew them up and wash them down with water. I’ve noticed better sleep and less need for sleep , my thumbs have lost their arthritic pain and basic inflammation is less. If I’m working (taper) and I’m on my knees a lot they aren’t sore the next morning. I want to get into the turmeric habit . I’m sure you can’t buy the benefits turmeric provides.

Excellent talk. Garlic was not mentioned and I’m curious about the research since it’s used so much particularly in French cooking. I tend to start most of my dishes with garlic, usually always on top of onions not raw. What are the benefits of garlic?

When I visited a friend living in Costa Rica she dried to work in the sun grounded and made a number of spice options out of it including a drink it was mixed with tea a lot I love it with small potatoes and eggs but I've lived in Asia for a number of years so ginger green tea so many things have been a part of my diet for 50 years but I'm learning all the timenew new spices new options

Turn on CC. I also find it hard to hear or understand when they talk as I am hard of hearing lately. I use headphones and can increase the volume. Great Podcast with wonderful information.. I often use a pen and paper to write down some of the info...I may not hear it correctly bur CC means I can read it ...even if mis- spelled!! LOL!!

I love herbs and spuces. Ive always used them especually parsley. Goes into everything even my curries olongs with my spiced.. good someone promoting them. Thanks. For the extra info..

A week a doctor told me that you have Rheutomited Arthirities so how is turmeric prepsred the amount to be taken and the side effects behind it.Again I am a diabetic patient for a long time, i am taking metaformin and glamax how does it affect this.

On my nutrition course , turmeric is always mentioned as a good thing, etc. But i did hear a chap on YT called Markus Rothkranz (knows a LOT about food etc but isnt as far as i know a nutritionist - i could be wrong) who advises caution with turmeric as it can destroy our good as well as bad microflora in the gut. He says stick more with ginger. SO many opinions! Hmmm!

Where are you i have been giving my wife turmenic pure for 14 years. We where australian. She died 5 years ago and she lived longer for 24 years. We introduced black pepper about 5years later.

Helps you go to the toilet. I had been noticing recently that I have become prompt in the morning before even eating, and was wondering what I was doing right. It roughly coincides with beginning to add turmeric and back pepper to my chicory coffee in the mornings. I use fresh as much as possible.

Any advice, i dont have problem with medium spices, but i started noticing unwellness after taking hot drinks with turmeric.. does turmeric lower blood pressure? Maybe it lowers mine Way too much.. my thought though.. any advice Will be appreciated🙏

I wish the sound quality was better. He speaks softly and the mic isn't good enough. It's a bit hard to follow for that reason. And yes, my vol is at max!
