In 1938 Superman flew onto comic book pages and into our hearts. Let's go back to where it all began where two young artists living in The Great Depression dared to dream big.

Another interesting story is one that was rejected by DC called "The K-Metal from Krypton". Siegal and Shuster wanted Lois Lane to learn that Superman and Clark Kent were the same guy very early on in this story, and it also introduced the concept that would later be known as Kryptonite.

I am a creator, so I feel for J.S. and J.S. mostly because the bigger companies take advantage of the creator. Both companies have clauses in their contracts that gives them ownership of anything you create while working under them. Even if you come up with something completely outside of the normalcy of the established universe, it belongs to them, the company.

Superman used to beat up corrupt politicians and gangsters. Now he fights robots and aliens without any connection to current problems -which are the same: corruption, greed, stupidity. He even was used as a weapon of mass destruction by the US military in Frank Miller's Dark Knight series. I want my anti-establishment Superman back!

I’ve always liked The concept of Batman because of the human element , but anyone that can fly and do what he does wins hands down he he and the scenes where superman flys in and saves the kids in the bus or the one where the plane is crashing to earth in recent times and he’s flying down with it so fast and around it to save the people Batman cannot compare such powerful scenes and capabilities really set the imagination on fire. But the only person for me that takes the number one spot from superman is Jesus Christ but beyond that superman rules them all. That being said the only superhero that kind of comes close and seems quite similar is Thor as you see In the Hemsworth movies as to his strength and power and ability to fly very cool also before marvel disrespected the character they had built up. Superman for president.

Good video! .... "After Siegel's discharge from the Army, he and Shuster sued Detective Comics in 1947 for the rights to Superman and Superboy. The judge ruled that the March 1938 sale of Superman was binding, but that Superboy was a separate entity that rightfully belonged to Siegel. Siegel and Shuster settled out-of-court with Detective, which paid the pair $94,000 ($940,000 when adjusted for inflation) in exchange for the full rights to both Superman and Superboy.[100] Detective then fired Siegel and Shuster." Go to wikipedia to read the full story.

On June 2nd 1932 Jerry Siegal's father died during a robbery at the store he owned and was working at. There is an urban legend that his father was killed by a gunshot which is why Seigal created a fantasy character who could not be harmed by bullets. The reality is equally as sad; Mr. Seigal died of a heart attack during the robbery. This is likely why part of the Superman mythos is, despite all his powers, he was unable to save Pa Kent from a fatal heart attack.

Yeah I almost kind of miss that style of comic books, the one and done stand alone issue, nowadays everything has to be in almost graphic novel format, and take 8 issues to do one story, and all the heroes are written like everything that happens to them is the most important thing that ever happened to them, and we no longer get funny and goofy style one-off issues of supes beating up butlers, and saving the day in a small way

Yes if you agree to sell something it’s binding and just because somthing does well later doesn’t entitle you to anything just because you created it if you sign away those rights at the time of sale of your creation. Probably a good lesson of perhaps having a clause added that allows you to have a percentage stake in the intellectual property, I don’t know I’m not a lawyer but this example certainly is a cautionary tale.

I've never understood the appeal of this character? What do you find inspiring about him? I ask this question a lot but no one ever seem to be able to answer it. What I don't like about this character is that he did nothing to earn his gifts. Most of the other superheros contributed in gaining there powers in some way.g If Bruce Banner wasn't kick ass at science he would never got himself in the situation to be the Hulk, or if Matt Murdock wasn't a brave and selfless he would have never became Daredevil. Unlike Superman who... once again, did nothing. Regardless of who he was a person he was on Krypton, or his actions, he going to end up as Superman, which I just find extremely uninspiring. Then he's gifted the knowledge of the universe from his Dad in fortress of solitude and his first decision he makes about his life is to work at a tabloid newspaper. Really? At least all the other superheros have job that contribute to society in some positive way. I find Daredevil very inspiring. He's a hero during the day in the courts then at night on the street. He does it all with not-so-superpower. It's hard to supersonic hear someone to death. He needs to actually be good at martial arts. Unlike Superman who can snap necks and Superman punch... oh wait is that just Roman Reigns. Even without his powers he would still be a hero, unlike Superman.

As far as I'm concerned, the fact he used them for good and is able to control those powers is proof enough he's earned it as he would have to train hard since youth in order to master such power, which has proven to be a huge task for someone his age. Other's like say Lex Luthor might have gone mad with power if he gained it, or others might suffer from the strain such as the time in an issue of Superman/Batman, Superman's and Batman's powers switched, Batman began to lose control and was becoming mentally unstable that it was up to the depowered Superman to take him down. Also the Daily Planet is not a tabloid newspaper, in universe its one of the more trustworthy news establishment in the DC universe, the reason he works there in current canon is because journalism was a passion of his and wanted to use his skills to right wrongs as a newspaper reporter by exposing corruption or supporting the underdog when he's not using his powers plus the Planet represents his human connection as a way to keep him in check. Superman also trained his body in order to properly harness these powers and has shown to struggle against unbelievable odds. He's also trains in martial arts or other discipline to both keep his powers in check and in case he's depowered to still be capable in a fight. All of these are qualities that are but a small part of why Superman has remained inspiring, relevant and most of all iconic and is why he has earned the right to such powers.
