The F-35B does not have a vertical engine. The front Lift-Fan is driven off the one jet engine Pratt & Whitney F135-PW-600 via the Rolls-Royce Lift-System.

A Boeing 747's engine can cost from 700,000 to 1.5 million. Nowhere close to a billion. And one of these engine can suck in many small birds with no issues. Though larger birds like geese can cause a problem but that is very rare.
@nate4745
@nate4745 Жыл бұрын
A billion dollars ain't worth that much anymore. It's not only the engine costing more but also the dollars having less value. It's called 'Inflationary Spending'. If a thing costs a dollar and the government doubles the amount of dollars in circulation, that thing will cost two dollars.

My dad worked for Lockheed Martin over the course of 42 years. However, he was laid off three times, one of those long enough that he felt like an unwanted burden upon the family and contemplated suicide to help us. Fortunately a job at Siemens came available at just the right moment. Praise God! Dad finally retired with credit for 29 years. PS: He retired while the F-22 was wrapping up and I loved the rare opportunity to tour the factory. I was amazed how big the engines are on both the F-22 and F-35.

I worked on the assembly floor of P&WA a couple of years in the late 1970s. It was a cool job with good pay and benefits. I did well there Electronics was my thing and I quit. I was an avionics tech on P-3 Orions in the Navy. I was making over 3 times what I made at P&WA in a couple years doing electronics work in Alaskas oil field. I retired from AT&T doing communications along the pipeline and working a gateway satellite earth station. My oldest brother was the 3rd generation to retire from P&WA. My dad worked on a rocket engines in W Palm Beach in the early 1960s and then on the Apollo fuel cell in Connecticut. Heck, my best friend growing up ended up a manager in engineering. He had a degree in metallurgy.

You state that the F-35B VTOL model has an engine behind the cockpit that "points up" in addition to its propulsion engine. That is not correct. The F-35 has ONE engine that drives a ducted fan for vertical takeoff.

@@TheMrgoodmannersthey make more power than the engines in any of the aircraft you just mentioned, and in the case of the Hornet it makes more power than its 2 engines and ties with the Super Hornet's improved twin engines. It's not even a completely bespoke design, having sourced from the F119 and still manages to power both the aircraft and numerous systems onboard that would likely fry legacy fighters trying to run them.

@@shannonjurgens3667that seems a bit much, afaik the moving parts of a jet engine are usually just the turbines which total up to two or three spools; I guess the compressor/turbine blisks count up to 10-15 or so if you count them unless you're referring to all the fuel/oil valves. Technically speaking, engines like ramjets and scramjets have no moving parts at all

I was at Edwards Air Force Base during the testing of this aircraft. The reason the 35 was built, was to give the u.s. a plane they could sell. The technology on the 22, is still top secret and when it goes out of service, it will still be top secret. The closet plane today to the 22 is the B-21. If you still think these aircraft are advanced, you should have seen what was being developed in the early 90's.
