Nairobi (Kenya) is a very complex, diverse city. The rich are REALLY rich, and the poor are REALLY poor.
Today I took a trip to a district in Nairobi called Kibera, which is considered to be the biggest urban slum in Africa. More than 1 million people live within 2 square kilometers.
I don't know how many videos it will take me to spread this message, but I can tell you with absolute certainty that people in impoverished areas are significantly happier than the wealthy.
And overall, I've found Kenyan people to be the most heart warming, welcoming and friendly people in Africa (along with Malawians!) Have I mentioned that I love Nairobi?!

The moral of the story isn't that people living in extreme poverty can be happy even though they don't have easy access to clean water, medical care, and upward mobility. It's great that people can find joy in any circumstance, but the moral of the story is that the wealth of the extremely rich is predicated on the degradation of rights and resources for the poor. Something must be done to change that. This is not even to mention that the existence of these circumstances is in large part due to the legacy of colonialism and the active measures of the USA, World Bank, and IMF.

I tend to think some foreign people are obsessed with Kibera,it like a tourist attraction to them..Let me go there take a few pics so people can see how humble i am,"white saviour mentality".In real essence you got the wrong info,the number of people living there is far less,Lord,no one drinks sewage water,come on!,they buy water that are bought in drums..Kids there do go to school..and Surprise,its actually no longer the largest slum in Africa,the Kenyan government together with UN habitat built houses for the people a while back,the houses are right next to the slums,you cant miss them..But oh wait,that wont be interesting to show so instead lets show the same old cliche of poor,devasted Africans.

I cannot wait for the day Kibera will be non-existent but the fools will still say it is "the largest slum in Africa". Kibera is not even oin the top 10 largest slums in Africa if accurate information was used than the peddled ESTIMATES they throw around. I like your videos but allow me to correct you. The population in Kibera is around 200K and they don't drink water from the rivers full of trash & human faeces. They buy water piped through the slum illegally. If you walk through the streets you will be able to see the pipes.

How old is this video? Kibra has new good high schools. Public taps with new clean water points and ablutions blocks.I pray we get rid of this slum one day through upgrading but NMS has and is doing great.Those railway residents were moved out.

I love this clip! You report the challenges of the district but also show happy people -- and faces of beautiful children -- despite what many feel is abject poverty. I do agree that the population figure is inflated, however. I have read that it's about 170,000. Thanks for a fair and balanced report!

Like your videos but the population myth of kibara was debunked. They are less than a quarter of that. Apparently ngos get more money when they say that glaring "1 million" number. But it is a shame all the same how people in nairobi are on opposite ends o living standards. There's A slum next door to a golf course

Also lots of money goes into Kibera and nothing really changes. The people themselves have to change as opposed to merely throwing money at the problem. People generally just throw their rubbish anywhere as opposed to bagging it or putting it in a single place. I was quite stunned at that attitude when I witnessed it. Many people in Kenya have a "give me something" attitude which only perpetuates the problems. Education and instilling responsibility is more important than handouts. Handouts induce dependency and lack of self value.

In the same spirit that the govt of Kenya is procuring funds for infrastructure development projects, surely they should come up with a formidable plan to construct long storeyed flats with many units to house these unfortunate Kenyans and do away with these shacks that are an eye sore on the image of Kenya once and for all. The remaining land can be rehabilitated for other projects and the rivers that flow thru the slum cleaned. No one else should be allowed to put up such structures thereafter when all affected persons are housed and comfortably accomodated in the new house units.

acording to the kenya bureau of statistic 2019 censas report the population of kibra is estimated to be around 185,777 idont under stand were did you get that finger of 1.000.000

About an year or year and half ago, the numbers were revised after census. NGOs (both local and international) had been exaggerating the situation of Kibra for decades for funding. It's also not the largest, it's 2nd largest in Africa. Looking at the time this video was taken I wouldn't blame him for using the old wrongly reported numbers.

@@t0n0k0 It is not even the second largest on Africa, there are worse on the African continent. Do you know 35 African do not even have figures of their slum population? The Kibera figures were not even revised, those figures have been there but ignored, 2009 census showed 170,170. 2019 population is 185,777. Them idiots have to raise funds, so they stick to their 500,000- 1million. Besides, there have been slum upgrading programs. But they will chose the oldest and worst looking areas footage to maintain the narrative. It is just sick!!

Most activists overstate the population numbers inorder to get funding for communities living in poor slum areas like Kibera.The most recent cencus in 2019 only reflected barely 200K people living there.

The reality is that families who move to slums from the countryside mostly leave a good life behind where they had everything, in hopes of getting a job in an office which to them seems like getting paid big for nothing, and buying big cars and houses while at it, and they think anyone can do that and they only have to move to the city for that... When in fact they trade up decent work and decent living to live dirt poor from then.

I can tell you for a fact that this is untrue, in Kenya at least. Though most rural Kenyans have a place to live (in their rural homes), most rural areas are cash-strapped with no jobs or opportunities, they move to Nairobi to make a living. The majority of them do not have the education required to get office jobs, they mostly get by with odd jobs and casual labor. The slightly luckier ones might get stable employment as househelps, gardeners etc.

@@mysteriousDSF Most Kenyans (even the poor) have rural homes. It's not really a sign of wealth though, the land many own is family owned or inherited and is only big enough for their house and sometimes a small farm, it's not uncommon to still see mud walled houses over there. Poverty is still rife in many of these places. Starting a business requires capital which is obviously unavailable to many, and even if you started a business there's only so much money you can make in a place with a weak economy. As for education, many rural schools offer poor quality education meaning low performance and a lot of families can't even raise the money to send their kids to school thus keeping them in poverty. I assure you that anyone who was making really good money in their rural home would not throw it all away to start over in a place like Kibera.

Total white-washing. I went to Kibera as well, and while I agree that it's important to show that happiness exists in these places, you really don't do justice to the challenges that exist here. As a videographer you have a communication responsibility, and publishing short snipits of contexts such as these undermines both these communities and the real discussion that is taking place within and about these places. You're not fooling anyone. You went there to get exotic footage to get thumbs up.

Liar liar liar... Kibera does not have 1million people. Census in 2009 indicated less than 170K. Also Kindly refer to the 2019 census. Stop inflating figures to gain more donor support.
