Nice showing, thank you, I've just installed a BBSHD, with Lekkie sprocket 2 1/2 months ago and my controller totally failed. Under warranty luckily. To see yours is going so well for that long is encouraging.

My husband has pretty much the same setup as you. BBSHD with lekkie chain ring on a Surly. He has broken his clutch twice now in under 2,000 miles. He is a heavy rider though and really works his BBSHD hard. We use bafang ebikes instead of driving. Oh! he also snapped his motor rotor in two once. Even with all the replacements and repairs it still beats a car payment.

Excellent vid, and nice work on the field repair! About the motor coming loose, there are "stabilizer bars" you can get which replace or suppliment the stock mounting bracket. It rests along the chainstay, and you can either clamp it to the chainstay or drill & tap a bolt hole. This way, it transfers the motor's torque into the frame and keeps it from coming loose. I put one on when I first built my. Also used the stock mounting bracket under it with lock washers between the mounting bracket and motor housing, plenty of Loctite 242 on all the bolts down there, and so far it's stayed rock solid. I highly recommend the stabilizer bar. Right now you can get it from California E-Bike, Luna Cycle, and Johnny NerdOut.

Nicely done. I put 14,500 miles (23,300 km) on my old BBS02 in a little over 3 years and it was still going strong when I took it off. The only service it needed was a pinion gear replacement at the end of the first year.

Hi Jack! Watched your epic solartrip to china- what an awesome inspiring achievement! Also got the bbshd since 3 years now, completing my second build. Had problem with securing the motor at first, but opened up a rubber hose and glued it with steel epoxy to the frame above the motor, and used 2 rubber hoses to secure the motor - one around the motor, the other around the frame and the first house clamp. Before I put the hose between, the paint where the frame and motor meet, had worn away, and aluminum to aluminum made a annoying creaking sound when pedaling. Even now the motor would wobble a little, but it was later solved with a jaw turnbuckle, between the hole at the left top of the motor, and to a plate that was secured to the waterbottle mounting holes up the seatpost-tube. Problem solved! On my second build I only made 2 thin 68mm long metalplates instead to put in the bottombracket, (68mm long), which made the axle fit perfectly. Then only fastened the motor with the two house clamps. Rock solid! Mobile 28 sticks to the gears and does not fly off the gears easily, but I also filled the empty areas outside the big gear and under it, to make sure it won´t escape. Works a charm! BTW thanks for the tip about the crank bolts, 2:10, do you have a link for these?
@JackButlerVideos5 жыл бұрын
I understand the struggles 😅 have you seen the bracket made by lunacycle.com? It's quite a neat solution, i have one and took it on the suntrip just in case but never used it! The crank arms are by a company called lekkie (that make the chain ring too) i would recommend them, they are much more solid than the Bafang originals.
@cobainwindsurfer7625 жыл бұрын
@@JackButlerVideos yea, their bracket would probably work, don´t think it was invented back then so I had the fun struggle to cope with :) Very happy with my light blingring, no chainskipping whatsoever. Never thought my leekie T42 would ever break, but one day going full trottle up a steep hill it did. Interesting thing is that the new leekie 42T I ordered, looked a little different, the small "arms" combining the center to the outer part of the chainring is revolving clockwise, the one that broke had the "arms" counter clockwise. So it looks like it had been an quality upgrade - holding up nicely!
Quick tip when putting the cover back on ..grease both sides of the cover gasket, creates a better seal and makes the gasket last as long as the motor it won't tear.

@@JackButlerVideos what are the crank arms you used? smart thinking there. I bought two crank arm pullers. first one got stuck on the cranks of an old broken frame, second one is laying around cause i wouldn't dare too ... I thought with the different two-piece crank designs i would've been through with that, but i guess squaretype cranks aren't that easy to fight off ... :D Also: really glad to hear you are in for another round. I must admit that i am jealous. but me and my gf will be saving up and experimenting on different settings. So we are really thankful for your insights and reviews about all your gear ... Furthermore: What replacement parts did you take one the trip? and which did you really need? Which where good to have and which would you leave behind? And as you seem to simplify everything to allen keys ... what are other simplification on components setups etc. you would wish for from manufacturers? Again: thank you for all your answers, engagement, insights etc. Hope you will enjoy the alps a bit further, or wherever you are at right now. if you ever come near frankfurt or darmstadt in germany - let me know ! :D for example next year at the spezi?

The crank arms are lekkie "buzz bars", it's really handy not needing the annoying crank puller. Good luck with the tests, hope you find a good solution for travelling around with! I took a few spare clutches, the large gear you see in the video, a new controller and another display. I didn't use any of it. If i used the BBSHD again i would probably bring the same again but just one clutch. All of those components are the most likely to fail and are vital to the motors function. I only use Allen keys as that's what all bike parts have, i like torx but whatever the industry chooses worldwide is the best to stick to. Thanks for the kind offer and the ongoing support!!!

Though I have no BBSHD, this was a interesting video for me. I was looking for something to lubricate my Bafang BFSW X02 hub motor, and I don't want to use a standard grease, because it absorbs oil over the time. I tried silicon grease from Liqui Moly (it's for plastic lubrication at some parts of the car), but it seems not to be really good for this. I will try the Aeroshell 22, if it's certified for aircraft it can't be a bad stuff. Have a nice ride on Mallorca!

@Shaker4x44 жыл бұрын
Luna apparently have a bracket to stabilise the motor from rotating, and hence loosening of the nut you have the spanner for. The clutch is a good thing to carry as a spare, and something I would include as a spare part, incuding the gasket kit. If you cake the clutch in grease too much, or inside the gears it runs in, it won't engage properly. But wear is something you would expect, and carry a spare part in anticipation of a breakdown.
@JackButlerVideos4 жыл бұрын
I actually have that bracket but not used it! Good info!

@@JackButlerVideos WD-40 has a spray-on specialist White Lithium Grease. It is suitable for most metal on metal applications, but is ok on plastics too. It is non-drip when set, is heat, and moisture resistant, so inhibits rust. An invaluable product to have around the home, like WD-40 light oil itself. I believe this would be good for this application in moderation. I also use it on roller skate bearings for my Children. Get a straw nozzle for the sprayer. I wouldn't use it on bicycle chains though, as it will attract dirt, but bearings, yes indeed. If you live on the road, similar products can be purchased in a smaller tube. No more black grease mess!

Hi Jack.. (something you don't want to say at the airport..! HaHa) . The BBSHD is much easier to replace the clutch than the 750w BBS02. On the bbs02 you have to remove the left side axle locking nuts/rubber seal/ball bearing/washers. This must be done to remove the axle (pulling the reduction gear on the right side) remove the bearing, then unbolt the clutch cover and replace the clutch and or complete axle/reduction gear. a complex, 4 hour project. The HD has a better (more serviceable) design. a 1 hour project.

Hey man I'm a heavy guy 6'8 and 130kg do you think these motors would be right for me?
@JackButlerVideos4 жыл бұрын
It depends so much on what your expectations are. I usually ride at 20 - 25 km/h and use 100-200w whereas other "e-bikers" ride at 45km/h and 1500w. This is a very powerful motor and with the right gearing can do a lot so i think you will be fine. You get more power running on 52v instead of 48v if you're still concerned.
@TimpBizkit4 жыл бұрын
Use the correct cadence for the assist level. The no load rpm is about 70 on assist 1 and about 140 on assist 5 so keeping pedaling at 90+ on level 5 will avoid the motor labouring too much and make it run more efficiently than trying to mash the pedals on level 5 all the time. Get a smaller chainring and bigger back sprocket and the motor will be fine load wise even if the overall acceleration takes a bit longer with a heavier person. I put the 52 tooth chainring on but it just gives me headroom to pedal really hard and fast with the motor on maximum as well as to cruise at a low cadence on level road around 23 mph on level 1, pedaling along at 60 rpm (which isn't labouring the motor much on level 1)

Jack. I am thinking about getting one of these BBSHD for my commuter. I currently have a DD on a steel framed bike but my new bike is aluminium. How have you found the reliability and have you done a vid on setting up the CA3 to the bafang? cheers mate
@JackButlerVideos5 жыл бұрын
Reliability is extremely good. Unfortunately i have heard quality control is not perfect so sometimes it's possible to get a drive with an issue. Parts are very cheap, avaliable and easy to replace for the BBSHD though. The CA3 does not communicate with the Bafang. It measures the voltage and current flow from a shunt between the Bafang and the battery (and measures speed at the wheel)
@bootyholeman56593 жыл бұрын
Those are pawls, and one of the biggest problems is people put grease on them. YOU DO NOT PUT, OR LET GREASE GET ON THEM. They will stick, gum up, not work correctly, thus allowing it to slip. You need something lighter like phil tenacious oil, which is what I use in all my free hubs, same mechanics as this so called clutch.
@adeharris44574 ай бұрын
You don't need synthetic grease for that gear genera gear grease work find it doesn't come in contact with the nylon gear

No, it's a common freewheel pawl found on nearly every bicycle and is where the telltale clicking sound comes from when you're coasting along. A sprag clutch looks like a roller bearing, but consists of asymmetrical bearings(sprags) and is much quieter, usually silent.

Jack.. This will extent the life of the Mid-Drive motor/gears. The MolyGrease has to be lithium2 (about the thickness of creamy peanut butter) . So watch Bruno's video to get the correct MolyGrease. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/adKGhbeDq9vJhYk.html I did this to my new BBS02 before installing it on my etrike. I have put over 3k miles and the motor stays noticeably cooler, and much quieter from the start. My trike mechanics do this to all of the BBS02's they install (and offer this service on old BBS02) Peace my friend, Ride Safely. Robb PDX USA

Do not grease the clutch otherwise those teeth will stick and will not engage with the gear. That was probably the actual problem. You could just clean and degrease the clutch, lube it with dry lubricant and install it back and it would work fine.

Add tungsten disulfide powder to all the gears and inside all the bearings. It will stop wear entirely, and it will decrease friction, expecially when the grease is out of the way and there is only a film of grease and tungsten disulfide about half a tablespoon throughout will turn it into an unstoppable power train. And its non conductive, and it protects against all corrosion, and it increases thermal conductivity, but less heat is generated, so the stuff actualy works. moly does not work well. it is hype, and its a bad molecule. Tungsten is the good stuff, tungsten disulfide. Helps seals last virtually forever, its the best oil additive and its the least popular because its a great secret. It would put bearing companies out of business basically. Ooohwaah.
