Inside The $1.5 Million Beechcraft Baron G58 Plane
0:00 - Intro
Passing up a Beechcraft Baron G58 simply because the first Baron flew in 1962 could be a major mistake. Introduced for the first time in 2005, the light twin-piston G58 is the only Baron still in production today and is fitted with the modern Garmin G1000 Nxi. Here is everything you need to know about the Beechcraft Baron G58.
0:56 - Cabin
As a pilot, you’ll enter the cockpit by climbing onto the wing, but passengers can step right into the cabin through the double doors. The Beechcraft Baron G58 features a comfortable 137 cubic foot or 4 cubic meter cabin. In addition to the pilot and copilot, the spacious and comfortable cabin can accommodate four passengers with more leg room for all the occupants. The seating is arranged “club style,” which means the seats face each other. The interior is fitted with hazelnut leather seats, a beautiful British tweed carpet, and an executive writing desk that will ensure productivity on the go.
The Baron G58 also features an XM satellite entertainment system: passengers have a remote control for the XM music, and their own input as well, so they can listen to their own music in the back. The plane also has tinted window inserts, which help to cut down the temperature in the summer, hold in heat in the winter, and are very good at canceling out the noise.
A large one-piece wrap-around windshield and six very large side passenger windows are fitted in the cabin to enhance the visibility for both passengers and pilots. The squared oval-shaped cabin also features a nose baggage area for placing the luggage, which is fully accessible to passengers during the flight. In fact, the two smaller seats in the rear can be removed to fit luggage or add legroom, which is probably the best and most comfortable way to go.
2:47 - Cockpit
The flight deck of the Beechcraft Baron G58 features a fully integrated Garmin G1000 Nxi avionics suite, and the GFC 700 autopilot system to reduce pilot workload. The cockpit has two 10.3-inch high-resolution liquid crystal displays for providing flight data, engine performance, and graphical navigation.
While the knobology is pretty much the same as the original, NXi offers optional wireless flight plan and database loading from a tablet, with improved joystick maneuvering for faster panning on the MFD.
The NXi offers sophisticated IFR and VFR chart options, including a night mode for improved readability in a darkened cockpit.
The optional Surface Watch safety ensures a taxiing pilot doesn’t wander onto a runway by triggering an aural and a visual warning to prevent an incursion. New to NXi is a visual-approach option offering graphical guidance to any airport, even those without an instrument approach.
4:40 - New Features
The Baron G58 features an ice and rain protection system, which encompasses automated pneumatic de-icing boots, a standard electro-thermal propeller de-ice system, and standard heated stall warning vane and fuel vents.
The aircraft also includes a stand-by alternator and secondary backup battery for providing the required electricity to the engine when the primary battery’s function fails.
The aircraft is also fitted with a throttle-controlled retractable landing gear, which is equipped with an electromechanical extension and retraction system.
5:24 - Engine and Performance
The Baron G58 is powered by two air-cooled, six-cylinder, fuel-injected Teledyne Continental IO-550-C piston engines with a TBO of 1,700 hours that produce 300 horsepower, and a three-bladed McCauley constant-speed metal propeller. With this combination, the Baron G58 can fly at a maximum cruise speed of 202 knots or 374 km/h and a fuel burn at 75% power of 26 to 32 gallons or 121 liters per hour.
The Baron G58 has a maximum range of 1,480 nautical miles or 2,741 kilometers and a ceiling of 20,688 feet or 6,306 meters. On takeoff, the performance of the G58 is impressive, with a maximum rate of climb near a jetlike 1,700 feet or 520 meters per minute. The plane has a takeoff distance of 2,345 feet or 715 meters and a landing distance of 2,490 feet or 759 meters. It has a maximum payload of 1,435 lbs or 651 kilograms, a fuel capacity of 194 gallons or 734 liters, and a maximum takeoff weight of 4,500 lbs or 2,500 kilograms.
6:58 - Purchase and Maintenance Cost
While the base price of a new Beechcraft Baron G58 is $1.5 million, a pre-owned one ranges from $900,000 to $1.4 million. The Beechcraft Baron G58 has total variable costs of roughly $157,000, and total fixed costs of $37,000. This breaks down to $430 per hour.

Uh-the Standby Alternator is NOT for "the engines"-it is for emergency power in the highly unlikely event of a dual alternator failure. Keeps the primary flight instruments alive.

Hooray. I flew the B55. At last the throttles, pitch and mixture levers appear to be in the conventional order (from L to R).
