I think Gareth put aside his ego and has continued to do so to this day, even when repeatedly pressed on it during Creator interviews. Gilroy however takes every opportunity to twist the knife, and definitely tries to claim it as his movie.

The movie much like the other Disney films breaks all writing rules. It was literally two movies crammed together and allowed no actual audience connection to anyone but the main character. A major mistake for a movie about a team of people going into battle. The entire first half should have been removed and the second half, behind the enemy lines should have been the film, while using flashbacks to fill in the backstory while also placing the team in more precarious positions to get out of to allow the audience to see them BOND and actually feel something when they died. It was so bad that now, suddenly, the death star now blows things up with explosions that move...slow.

To non-fans and people that dont think. Death Star slow moving explosion that makes no sense other than the writers are so shit they dont know how to write a dramatic death scene. Darth Vader that moves like a video game boss that a couple days later can barely move fighting Obi-Wan. Darth Vader seeing the plans being handed over to a ship he takes over the next day and says "You intercepted those TRANSMISSIONS". Amateur garbage.

jumbled up script, nonsensical human behaviour, bad dialogue. Random pet peef: Why is there a console with a switch sitting right on a beach, like switches in 90's shooter games? Forget it, doesn't matter, the characters are so forgettable. Who's that? Well, one can wield a stick blindly and he has a tag line. that other guy has a big gun. I mean... look how well written and acted other shows are. Look at the attention to detail in Foundation. Look at the human layers in Battle Star. Whatever. You're bar should be raised. "It's not as bad as episode II" is really not a badge of quality. SW has access to the best artists in the world with unlimited funds - how can anyone applaud the outcome?

People keep saying that the exhaust port was a plot hole, but in the movie it's explained that in additon to the things mentioned in this video, the port is ray shielded and the trench is heavily armed, showing that although the designers didn't consider one man fighters to be a serious threat, they still took it into account. And the rebel pilots' reactions to the briefing show that it's a desperate plan with little chance of success. The only person in the room who seems confident is a naïve farm boy who only last night was staring into the sunset dreaming of excitement, adventure and really wild things.

@davidh.4944 7 ай бұрын
People also don't seem to get that the exhaust port was _not_ the weakness set up in Rogue One. The instability of the main reactor was. The port was just the only means the Rebellion could find, in the short time they had, to set off the chain reaction from the outside. It was really a very clever way to tie R1 in with the original canon. The rebels could know that there was a vulnerability that could be exploited, and even generally where and what it was, but they still had no idea how, or even if, there was any way to do so. Fortunately for them, arrogance and poor planning had also led to some engineer failing to properly shield a small thermal exhaust port from outside attack.

I don't feel like the theatrical cut we got needed to be changed, I'm just disappointed we never got to see the scenes that were cut in any form. Deleted scenes were never included on any release of the film. Ever since seeing that conversation with Krennic and Vader in the trailer where Krennic says "The POWAH we are dealing with here is immeasurable", I've always wanted to see the rest of the scene. That line and the way Ben Mendelsohn delivers it is just too good.

I find it funny that they were worried it wasn't as good as Force Awakens as I find Rogue One to be a much better film - while unnecessary, it tells an interesting tale where as Force Awakens just retreads the same ground as previous movies. It isn't unusual for a trailer to have shots that don't make the final cut, or even for there to be shots done just for the trailer, but wow there seems to be a huge difference between what was being promoted and what was finally released. I think the finished product is a good film but yeah, would be interesting to see the original cut to see what Disney originally agreed to make and what the cast all signed on for. Sounds like it wouldn't be that different for the most part but some interesting changes. You never know, Disney + always needs content and this would be a quick and easy thing for them to put up there so I wouldn't be surprised if it gets released sooner than later.

Gareth Edwards is a class act. He has always been humble and spoken with a positive attitude about this film. Also, he WAS fired. Back then Disney cared much more about ensuring positive spin on their films and TV than they do now (so many train wrecks and publicity nightmares!). Having now watched The Creator it's safe to say Edwards struggles with telling a good story. He is an excellent director but clearly has trouble with narrative, therefore the reshoots and Gilroy's rewrite seem like they massively improved the movie. Rogue One is the best thing with the Star Wars brand on it since Genndy Tarkovsky's Clone Wars cartoon and that's thanks to Edwards AND Gilroy. I don't think I need to see a director's cut and I think Edwards agrees. I want to see Edwards work with better screenwriters in future because he has such a good directing style but his stories always fall short. Rogue One is definitely his best work so far though.

The comic adaptation also extended scenes quite a bit: extended intros for Jyn and Bohdi, with Jyn's cell mate casually promising to kill her and Galen convincing Bohdi to defect and we see Bohdi sneaking away from the city and meeting the partisans. There would also be a moment of Chirrut sensing Bohdi as he left the city, implying he had some Force abilities. We were going to see how badly Bor Gullet was messing up Bohdi's mind, with his memories being scrambled by the creature. An extended death for Saw where he took out a small holoprojector to look at a picture of Steela. A brief scene between Galen and one of his scientists when they're told Krennic has arrived. A bit of Baze getting ready to assassinate both Krennic and Galen before Chirrut talks him out of it. A really nice scene between Bohdi and K-2SO where K-2 points out to Bohdi he chose to defect while he had to be reprogrammed, lamenting his own lack of personal choice and also explaining why K-2 tells him 'You're a Rebel now!' Mon and Bail reacting to the imminent attack on Eadu. A scene between Mon with Jyn and Bohdi before the meeting, where the 'I Rebel' line was going to be turned into 'Let's Rebel' after Mon tells them not to come with her into the meeting. Alan Tudyk also mentioned two alternate deaths for K-2, one where he died alongside Cassian and Jyn and another where Krennic kills him.

I think the best version possible would have included that beach scene. Yeah, the theatrical version is probably better than the original director's cut, but only because he was playing it safe, the one time Dishey was actually willing to take a chance. Rogue One is probably the most liked of the Disney SW films for two scenes that weren't in the origianl screenplay; all the characters dying, and Vader at the end. Although Jen's character seems to have been a bit more cocky and obnoxious in the original draft, I still kinda' miss the line, "This is a rebellion isn't it? I Rebel".

Rogue one is definitely one of my favorite SW films. Hearing you explain the changes, I think the theatrical cut is probably the best cut. I also like Solo. Unfortunately I think Solo was cut down by "The Last Jedi", which disenfranchised many die hard fans, with its treatment of Luke. Also, I think creating a movie like Solo or Black Widow, after the characters on screen deaths, cuts the interest in those movies. BW should have came out before End game.

I totally agree about Solo's poor performance due to the abysmal Last Jedi. Solo's bad reception was heavily biased because of such a bad reaction to what Rian Johnson had done. Really unfortunate - Solo is fantastic.

"Solo"'s poor performance had nothing to do w TLJ. It had a lot of cringe and nonsensial moments and pointless scenes. Simply not a great story. I'm a huge SW fan and literally fell asleep twice. Solo would have been better served as a short series like "Obi-Wan". It simply wasn't that great as a stand alone movie compared to "Rogue One", or even many of the TV series. Rotten tomatoes has Solo at 69% and TLJ at 91%. Audience scores are simply bitter SW fans that try to skew the film and can't handle that Luke Skywalker's charachter followed his path perfectly despite what Mark Hamil thinks. TLJ had as many issues as the other sequel films, but blaming it solely for any missteps is so 2020. Give it up.

It's sad that due to the reshootings Alexandre Desplat had to leave the production with a good portion of the score already composed. I do like what Michael Giacchino came up with last minute, but it leaves me wondering what the score could have been. It's said that some of it was adapted to Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets but it's difficult to know which parts were originally for Rogue One.

I quite like the recurring theme of hubris throughout the ages in Star Wars. The Jedi and senate hubris refused to believe that anything could possibly deceive or oppose them successfully. The empire had that same hubris and now we are seeig it again in the re-established Galactic Republic in the Ahsoka show. It makes those scenes all the more powerful that show Padme dumbfounded by democracy dying with thunderous applause, or Qui Gon's uttet disbelief in what the council says to him in The Phantom Menace. Its probably my favourite aspect of Star Wars as a whole - who is right, who is wrong, who is doing the right things for the wrong reasons and the wrong things for the right reasons, who is blind to what is going on and who has their eyes wide open and tries to either oppose it or use it to their advantage

@@TraceguyRune Mace, and the distrustful and nearly adversarial treatment of Anakin by the council played directly into Palpatine's plan, and was a primary reason for Anakin's fall; it was practically a self-fulfilling prophesy. They never acknowledged the reality of the situation of Anakin being in the order, instead keeping him at arm's length while Obi-Wan fumbled to deal with him. They became absentee keepers because they never wanted him, but they still used him for the war while simultaneously acting as if his instability was an exterior problem that they couldn't help with. It wasn't in the main plot, but Anakin's story with the council is also similar to troops being used by governments and coming away with unaddressed PTSD.

The only thing I'm a little bitter about (that's surprisingly not mentioned here) is that we'll never hear Alexandre Desplat's original score. The bigger plothole that Rogue 1 fills is: How the hell did the rebels analyze all those plans and find this flaw in such a small period of time. Now we see that: A) They had the specific part of the plans they needed and B) they knew there was a flaw to be found. This is what a good prequel does. It improves the original film. I was a kid in Jr. HS (Middle School) when the original "classic" Star Wars came out, so I grew up with the original trilogy. This might be sacrilege to some, but IMO Rogue One is the best of all the movies. The "other" two trilogies could have been so much better, but in the end they were really lacking and disappointing in many areas. As for the streaming series, the first season of Andor was fantastic, with The Mandalorian being a worthy second. However, The Book of Bobba Fet and Obi Wan were very disappointing. So far, Ahsoka has had some good and some disappointing episodes, so we'll see what season two brings. Overall, Kathleen Kennedy almost destroyed the Star Wars franchise with her more "modern" vision of where it should go. Thankfully there are other very creative talents that have saved her from herself...

Rogue One is an interesting case study in a project that is one of my favourite Star Wars movies on paper, but also one of my least favourites in execution. It's a movie where all of the filmmaking choices and corrections that are mentioned in this video are almost visible when you watch the film. For example, the Vader scene should be an incredible scene, but when watching the movie, it almost feels like an insert that was an after thought. Another is all of the beach sequences seen in the trailers that were cut from the movie, where when you are actually watching the movie, it feels like something dramatic from the third act is missing and wound up on the cutting room floor. It's too messy of a film that just lacks *something* and where the filmmaking becomes noticeable instead of you just being immersed in an emotional and riveting story. It feels like a Frankenstein of a project that just crossed the finish line. I wonder if they were actually happy with it when they had to complete it, or if they just thought they salvaged it enough to make it passable, because that's how I see it. I absolutely *adore* the show Andor, and I feel like THAT is satisfying in the way that Rogue One should have been, and depending on the day, I might tell you that Andor is the best piece of Star Wars content that's ever been made.
