These parents defended their unusual choices. In 2016, video of a 6-month-old learning how to swim sparked fierce reactions on social media. In 2015, a mother defended herself after she bought her three children over 300 Christmas gifts. In 2016, a mother got attention for skateboarding and doing tricks while wheeling her baby in the stroller at the same time. Inside Edition Digital’s Andrea Swindall has more.

I started teaching my daughter to swin in our pool at 6 months. She mastered turning onto her back in just 3 days. By her 1st birthday, she could swim the length of our long pool. To me it's a crime to own a pool and not teach your children to swim.

Absolutely it's a crime for people to be irresponsible pool owners. People freak out about this mom but if you don't like it then it's not for you & you don't have to put your kid through it.. but try to swallow the irony if your kid ever falls in a pool. 😕 I would never wish that on anyone..but that mom actually HAS been thru it & knows exactly what it's like so I for one would probably heed her advice.

I watched a documentary where this woman's story was covered in much more detail. Her daughters were pre-teen and teenager while her son was not two or three years old yet. I'm assuming that's where the difference comes in. The mom said during the year she would buy her children the necessities like clothes, etc. but it was really only Christmas, that she bought the kids gifts (besides their birthday) and they weren't ones to go on long vacations. Although that many gifts still seems excessive, she still included a lot of things that they would need/use throughout the year under the tree. It was their family's time to spend money and enjoy the holiday instead of doing it all year long. 🙂

Babies' anatomy causes them to automatically close off their airway when water comes close. It's a core part of the drowning -prevention method. It has been done for countless generations and may have saved so many already if it were more widely known and practiced.

Yes. It saved me as a youngster. It surprised me as a kid when my classmates didn’t know how to swim starting in kindergarten. I’d been in and out of the pool since I was less than a year old. But then again, both my parents were swimmers most of their lives.

People can give their opinions without being jerks about it. After all, if you post on social media, you can expect opinions. In my opinion, the only one I had a problem with was the Christmas presents. But that was her choice. I wish people understood that children want their parents' presence way more than presents from their parents. I think it's detrimental for kids to have too much but then again, that's my opinion. As long as the hair dye wasn't toxic ..🤷‍♀️

When you teach your 6 mo old children water safety, it's to turn over on their back and float. It's what I taught my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. It's a class through the YMCA and is great. You must teach your children to survive since they can be out of your sight 10 seconds and fall into the pool. It's a wonderful program. I've seen too many children who have drowned as a healthcare professional and vowed not to have my family be a statistic. My daughter started on a USAA swim team at 5 yrs old until she was 17 yrs. She loved it and it helped her severe asthma.
