How are protective masks created?
Today you will see how protective masks are produced. Let's see how it's made!
Recently, we all have had to wear masks in public places. Although in certain sectors, for example, health care or some production plants, masks were also required before.
They are worn to protect our upper respiratory tract from airborne pathogens or harmful particles.
To see how these masks are manufactured, we visited their largest manufacturer in Poland. In the plant of a surface area of nearly 15 thousand square meters, located in Mińsk Mazowiecki, about 85 million masks can be manufactured each month. They are delivered, for example, to retail chains, health care facilities, schools, or residential care homes.
So let’s see how the process looks like. We will start with a three-layer type II R mask. It is characterized by a high level of antibacterial filtration and protects against droplet distribution pathogens.
It consists of two layers of spun-bond nonwoven and one layer of filtration meltblown textile. Its outer layer can be of any color, usually blue.
The materials are unwound on the line. Individual layers must be precisely arranged one above another. The filtrating textile is placed between the two layers. The layers are positioned by heads, moving smoothly to the left or to the right. The nonwoven position is controlled by special sensors.
Then the rollers form folds, i.e., the characteristic accordion shape, so the mask can be easily fitted to the face. The stiffening wire is also unwound, for shaping the mask at the nose base and ensuring its tight fit.
The three layers are sealed by ultrasounds and the masks are cut to the required length. Then the conveyor transports them to the zone where rubber ear straps, used to secure the mask around the ears, are sealed.
The finished masks are stacked in packages of 10 pieces and transported to the film-wrapping station. They can also be packed into carton boxes.
Another type production of which we will analyze is FFP2 masks. They may consist of three to six layers. Apart from spun bond nonwoven and the filtration textile, they also contain thermally insulating Hot Air cotton.
Similarly as on the previous line, first, individual layers are unwound, and they are arranged evenly on each other. Then the wire stiffening the mask at the nose base is inserted. The layers are sealed by ultrasounds. The pattern on the mask is pad-printed or applied by an ink-jet printer. An indispensable element of the mask are, of course, rubber ear straps, securing the mask around the ears. Then the mask is folded in two and its shape is cut out by a rotating knife.
The plant in Mińsk Mazowiecki covers 60% of the demand for masks in the Polish market. Currently, works are in progress to start the production of anti-bacterial and biodegradable masks.
