From what I know, 2 cycle engines are designed to run at full throttle. I run mine at full throttle almost all the time, I have some small areas that I use less throttle like inside corners and around trees, but mostly it is full throttle. I check my spark arrestor when I change the spark plug and it has always been clean. I hit it with a propane torch and brushed it with a brass brush once just to see if there was any difference, and there was not. I have a 5 year old Echo SRM 225 that's still going strong. Great video, easy to follow for those not familiar with this procedure.

I just acquired one of theses srm 225 trimmers from a friend he already got a new one. It will not start I took the carb apart and partially rebuilt it with new diapharms but still no go so I'm ordering a new carb since there inexpensive and trying that. I have been watching your channel alot and I have learned so much. I showed my dad yesterday what I learned from your channel on taking apart the carb and he was impressed so thank you so much for your videos.

hey man, thanks, this was a life saver, i thought my machine was a dead one, and i had the same model as you shown there, echo 225, i tried everything, but could,nt understand what was wrong so i looked it up, and when i did whar you said,about the muffler screen being clogged up, and yes it was, i cleaned it with a old tooth brush and some mix gas and it was super clean, put in back in the weeder and start her up, and it was life brand new, super power, thank again, and keep it up, you help alot of people ..............GOOD JOB

I was told by my dealer to always run at full throttle when working it. These little engines have a centrifugal clutch that engage fully at full throttle so the clutch doesn't slip and wear out sooner.

The screen does two things. Acts as a spark arrestor (to eliminate a leaf fire, etc.), and acts like a cat., to burn off HCs. Small Eng Saloon did a test where red armor oil would clean up the screen after two tank fulls of gas mix. Chicanic did a video stating that the Stihl oil clogs the screen and causes carbon. I run my trimmer at slow speed.

I like to adjust the throttle for the cutting conditions i'm currently in. for example, those little gravel/rocks near a ditch line/culvert pipe, or next to a flower bed or garden I like to use less throttle, maybe only 1/4th throttle while trimming. It prevents throwing all those tiny little rocks at your face (which on most commercial straight shaft trimmers the head turns counterclockwise) which hurt really badly, and it prevents chopping off flowers or plants. now for open areas like a bank or waist-high grass, it's Wide-open Throttle the whole time. Another thing i did recently is i changed the 2 cycle oil i use. I used to run Stihl HP Ultra mixed at 50:1 for my FS-85 trimmers, but about 2 years ago i changed to Opti-2 oil, and it eliminated the screens getting clogged. Great video! I know it's from a couple years ago but still relevant! thank you!

Mine started running bad like that yesterday...head barely turning...I DID EXACTLY WHAT YOU SHOWED TO DO AND MINE STARTED UP LIKE BRAND NEW ON FIRST PULL. Much Mahalos from Hawaii! Your video was very helpful, and solved the problem of the 225 SRM that was just over a month old! I removed the clogged screen, and it ran excellent! It was purchased to replace one with the same problem, so I'll do the same thing to the old one to see if that was the problem with it.. I was told to run the fuel richer so to not burn up the engine in the tropical climate here by mechanic years ago, so did so all these years. I "Babied' this new one I bought, and apparently it was carbon build up within a month. After following your instructions, the new one ran great, and I will run it from now on "Balls Out, Full Throttle", etc. I did so today, after the removal of clogged screen and cleared out choke biomass! It performed effortlessly Thank You for this extremely helpful video!

Perfect! Was ready to rebuild the carburetor then saw this video. Removed the screen, put in a new plug and it runs like brand new. Screen was completely blocked, just threw it away. I would have rebuilt the carburetor and it still would not have run. Saved me a lot of time and frustration.....and money!! Thanks!!

The only problem with removing the spark screen is that it could cause a spark to escape from the engine or cause fire I would replace or burn the carbon off

I’ve had my echo for around 7-8 years and it started having this problem recently. I was kinda bummed thinking I was finally gonna have to get a new one and decided to look on KZfaq to fir a quick fix and give it one last try first and came across this vid. @@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE Worked like a charm. Cranked up and revs up to full throttle now. I had like 3 pin holes I could see through throughout the half of the screen that was exposed to exhaust. I used a small wire brush and cleared out the soot and crust until the screen was perfectly clear. Put it back together and the rest is history. You my friend are a God send. Thank you.

My uncle has one of these and it's never been cared for but always worked, I sort of adopted it last year and used it silly all season. I was never impressed with the power and my god for such a small displacement they are cold blooded little motors but always ran like a champ. Anyway, I popped the screen off today and it couldn't have possibly been any cleaner, like literally brand new looking which surprised the hell out of me. It always has a fuel odor out the exhaust so I assumed it would need a cleaning, nope. I left the screen out because I'm a rebel, and removed the dummy plug for the High jet and actually leaned it out slightly and it made a huge overall difference, snappier, sounds better, smells better. Before it wouldn't really reach full rpm steady with the full length of heavier whip till it was half worn. It does now and sounds stronger. I will run it a few times and check the plug just to make sure its not too lean, but so far I would say it was definitely worth the time to do it. I don't want to sacrifice the light weight and excellent fuel economy of this Echo for a more powerful much heavier trimmer. Tune this one and be happy. I figure the removal of the screen will negate the possibility of the extra heat leaning it out a bit may cause but that's something I need a few runs to determine.

What is the plug on the high jet? Is this something where the carb needs to be taken apart to do? Mine is just 2 years old and not run more than maybe 10 hours total,run like a champ but this evening it was not revving as high as normal and had a bit of a bog at full throttle.

@@Ron_Masterjohn If you have removed the guard and run longer than stock line it won't rev up till the line wears down, also if you use heavier than the .80 size line they won't turn up as quickly either. But the plug, is a little plastic cup, inserted into the hole that's just under the primer ball. Removal is very easy, as long as you do it right. Take a small drill bit, 1/16th, and drill a hole into the cap, it's recessed into that hole, it's a small hollow cup shape plastic cap. You can push at first to get the bit drilling, but ease up as it drills into it and you will feel as soon as you hit the actual brass screw, since its hollow it sinks right into it once through the top. As long as you don't go ham on it you can't really hurt anything, then you just need a slightly long, thin screw that you can thread into the hole you drilled, and just simply pull it right out. You only need to thread it into the hole you drilled just enough to catch you threads, a sheetrock screw seems like a good choice but it too big and a finer thread skinny ass screw is best. You want a very skinny screw because it's hard to perfectly center the hole you will make in such a little area, and if the screw just fits, once you thread it into the hole you drilled, it can bind up your extraction from the threads against the side wall of the hole. Finding the right extraction screw is the only hard part, it's probably best to just go to the hardware store with you 1/16 drill bit and get something just barely bigger. The low jet is the same procedure but is located on the top of the carburetor that your throttle cable goes to, the hole in what I would call the butterfly valve. Adjusting the screw, you will need a small flat screwdriver. It seems to me that all two strokes need adjustment once broken in, Sthil, seems to run them rich from the start and are fine, but that's just my experience I haven't had a ton of either and I am not a service department, to be honest I'm more of a Husqvarna guy, and they all have enjoyed some extra once broken in, they seem to enjoy a different tune in winter to summer too, but I like optimal, most people probably don't care. I recently got a 525ls weed whacker and I am over the moon with it. I still love my echo, but I'm dealing with a pretty large property, and I can run any line and plenty of smooth power. Not a toy, 3 times the fuel consumption but I can cover some serious ground with it. Don't be afraid to mess with yours, you can't hurt anything. Good luck.

Thank you for your video. I've had my SRM210 for 15 years, always starts never a problem. It ran great last week. Today it just would not rev, no power. I checked the exhaust and a mud dauber had plugged the screen with mud. Cleaned it up and back to full power. Thanks!

Depending on how tall the grass is, I usually try to keep the engine running at 1 constant speed and when I need a little more power I'll rev the engine up when it is needed.

Fixed my problem. I did a tuneup with a new spark plug, air and fuel filter and it was running sluggish. This fixed it. It runs a full speed. If run the trimmer at full speed when I am using the blower and the edger. I sometimes do not run it at full speed with the weedeater/string attachment when I go around trees.

This fix solved my problem. When I got down to the carbon filter, I flipped it around because ½ was still clear but was blocked by the housing. This let me keep the filter but allow air in through the other side. Thanks much for the great video.

Here in Texas we have small little dirt dobbers that love to build nests inside those mufflers. Without the screen the bugs can build their nests right inside the exhaust port! Best to just clean the screen and reinstall it

Great video. The spark arrestor was preventing my echo weed eater from reving up. I sprayed the arrestor with carb cleaner and then used a cigarette lighter to heat up the mesh arrestor which burned off the stuck on oil. Once cooled, the remaining carbon could be easily removed with a wire brush. I wanted to keep mine on because I often work in very dry grassy areas and don't want to worry about starting a fire.

Thank you!! I replaced the carb and was still running at too low a RPM. This had me thinking it was getting choked some kind of way. My screen was clogged big time! Took it out, running like new! And a new carb, spark plug and air filter now on my 3 year old SRM-225!

I use mine at full speed but I had too rich of a gas mixture for too long and possibly old gas as well. I’m going to use the Echo 50:1 premixed from now on. But she’s running like new right now! Thanks again!

Thank You. I believe this is my problem. I use mine at frame idling to up to about 75% of full power. But I always give it a few short bursts at 100% for a few seconds before putting it away. I think my problem was caused by seven seasons of no spark screen cleanup.

I found that when running a mulching blade head (which I do most of the time) short bursts are better than running a full rpm. Most of the mulching happens during the wind down of the rpm. Otherwise the head just bounces off the material.

I think you put the air filter housing on backwards. On my Echo PAS-225, the choke is at the back, next to the pull starter. Makes it much easier to pull the starter, and quickly adjust the choke. BTW, I use my trimmer mostly at full throttle. That's how it was designed to run.

Mine does this. I’ll have to check it when I get home. Mine is an SRM225. I was running it to chop ferns with the cutting blade. I ran it at full speed if I’m remembering correctly. It’s been acting up for a while and I haven’t had the time to look into it. I hope this fixes it!

Excellent fix and video camera work showing close details. Thank you for making and posting this video. (I only throttle up to full speed [~3%-5% of run time]. Except when cutting large high growth areas that I need to handle. Then, the full throttle is more like 65%-70% of run time. I only have to do this (high growth area) ~ 2-3 times/year. I had the same issue: Mine was a bad diaphragm in the bottom of the carb. Also don't forget that a weak coil or bad crankshaft seals give the same symptoms. One of mine had 150psi but when running past idle the seals would leak compression. Some carbs must tuned to an exact setting or they won't run without the choke.

Same issue. Changed carb, spark plug, air filter, fuel filter, checked spark arrester, cleaned carbon from cylinder exhaust port, and it still didn't work. Idles fine but when I increase throttle it chugs and dies. Maybe it was crankshaft seals. Too bad I gave it away so I'll never know. 😞

Good video, shops have a heavy fine now for removing the spark arrestor. I’m a fan of cleaning it annually, and run it the way you want. It takes 20 minutes end of season.

My echo gt225 had the same symtoms but the issue was a tiny speck of dirt in carb....removed air filter cover, choke box then spray entire carb area with carb cleaner. Removed 4 screws holding bulb..(.not neccesary to remove fuel lines) the removed the one screw holding the carb on. Do not peel black portgasket off. Leave body gasket in place too. The put on eye protection...glasses....spray down body of carb at first...then spay in all openi gs(not screw opening..lol) the spray carb aluminum body the same way. Clean all parts before reinstalling ....mine ran perfect.....i had already replace spark plug and fuel filter before starting.....good luck

It did the trick on my 16 year old SRM 210 never clean it pretty much just changed plugs. 👍🏻

It runs like new now!!! Throttle response is instant. I removed that plug so I can adjust that H screw also. Thanks for the video, would have taken me a while to figure it out without it.

Great man, I never knew about this spark arrester screen and it seems by symptom to be the problem. But unfortunately, I messed up the spark plug wire and ignition coil by pulling to hard on the wire now i am waiting for the replacement as it has no spark now what so ever but was just running before i pulled on it and broke it. since i will have it apart i will also check this screen which i am sure now that it is clogged as it has the same symptom

I tend to half throttle mine as it cuts fine and doesn't kick up as much crap. Personally I would not remove the screen like you did, but then I tend to have a lot of bees & bugs that like to find places to hide or call a home for the winter

I am so happy that with your video, I was able to perform a tune up on my Echo trimmer and also troubleshoot what was wrong with it. I was able to identify and fix the problem which was runnimg but unable to rev. Mahalo nui loa.

Always clean exhaust ports and the screen, because the loose carbon will fall in the engine

I have an Echo PAS266es trimmer that takes different attachments. I use only the pre-mixed 50-1 Echo Red Armor fuel because Steve's Small Engine Saloon showed that regular gasoline, even non ethanol, has components (olefins) that are no good for 2 cycle engines. I always run it on full throttle while actually trimming, but I let it idle a bit walking from place to place. It starts on the second pull. Lucky me.

I had this problem of not reving up. Cleaned screen, new carb and fuel filter , lines. Finally i swapped out the ignition coil. Bingo , for my machine it was the faulty coil all the time .

Split shafts have their advantages but some disadvantages too. I like the versatility though.

My Yamaha inverter generator also has an exhaust screen, probably because it's a camping-oriented unit. It's the only 4-stroke I've seen with one.

I always remove spark arrestors. Dont plan to trim in a national forest. Usually run my trimmers about half

A lot of times when I clean out a spark arrestor I’ll take the muffler off and burn it out with the torch. Just an extra step. Also I run that baby wideee open. It actually helps to keep the line from grabbing sometimes. When I use stihl 4 mix I don’t sometimes because it has that low end torque

Half throttle due to noise. I have a pas 230 and it's been ok. Replaced throttle cable and carburetor yesterday. Might need the whole throttle assembly control.

Spraying the screen with gumout and letting it soak for 15 minutes or so and then start it up. Usually clears out the carbon buildup

I have an Echo SRM-225 that I bought brand new last season. We have a fence around our backyard so I use lower speeds to trim that, but for most of the rest of the job I use higher speeds or full throttle, so it gets a good mix of RPMs. Hopefully I won't have to worry too much about this problem on my own weed eater.

@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE Eh, to be honest I'll check it if I start having problems. Season 2 still running perfect, I have zero concerns about it at this point. If it ever sounds like the one in the vid, I'll definitely be cleaning or replacing that screen.

@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE nope. The spark screen was perfectly clear. Carb is clean, filters are all brand new, fresh gas....still won't take any throttle :( I'll figure it out hahaha

@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE The carburetor adjustment screws just needed some adjustment. I don't know if it was the air screw or not because there's two but the one that's part of the throttle (air screw I think) needed to be opened up about a half turn. Runs great now, especially now the carburetor is all rebuilt too :D

I use my trimmers at the throttle necessary to do the task at hand...but it always includes some to plenty of full throttle to burn off carbon...

I half-throttle mine a lot because I feel it doesn't need to be so strong. I checked my screen and it's clean. I don't know anything about these things so it looks like I'm going to have to learn how to check the fuel line, the spark plug, the air filter, the carburetor, the engine, etc.

Better off to clean or replace the screen. Keeps the stink bugs out. I clean the screen with a grill lighter and wire brush.

I pretty much go full throttle with my Husqvarna 326 and 128. On my stihl fs85 I run it at half or 3/4 throttle. Husqvarna's only cut good at full throttle

2 stroke engines need to be run at full throttle to burn off any carbon & to prevent varnish deposits in the engine,as far as the muffler screen goes, I would burn it out & refit it over here in Australia as it was very dry up until this February,there were major bushfires which killed a few people in December-January in the middle of our summer & a man got arrested & charged all because he was using an electric power tool which caused a spark to fly out & start a fire. In U.S. states such as in California it's the same deal where it's very dry !

full speed the majority of the time, but at times revving on certain areas, which I've found to be often more effective than just leaving it at full speed constantly! I have the HONDA UMK 425 UE Strimmer and Brushcutter, but I do wish I'd gone for the UMK 435 UE.

That Echo PAS 225 must be really old. Mine is probably 8 years old and the muffler is way more restricted. They have a plate over the screen restricting it then another one over that further restricting it to the point I am lucky if I have 15% of the screen used. There are 5 bolts holding on the spark arrester where you only have three on this one. Guessing this was to meet emissions ratings. I would remove them but I don’t want to mess with the carb to adjust for the massive amount of airflow my muffler would get. My only issue is it takes forever to fully warm up and start running to full revs. My arrester was not plugged at all. Again thanks for the video even though it was not my issue.

I just heated up a 3/32 screwdriver and shoved it in the hole. I was then able to turn it to the left and now my pb251 has full power again.

Another fix is to pull the brass plug out underneath the carb bulb and lean out the carb a bit. Run it at high speed and make small incremental adjustments. These carbs are set a little rich from factory. I'm considering removing my spark arrestor screen. Are there any CONS to this?

Just the chance of fire. If you do remove it, run the engine at night and rev the engine from idle a few times and you see little glowing sparks fly out of the muffler.

The carbs are set lean from the factory not rich, due to CA EPA bs. Remove the cap and open half to three quarter turn and you should be good to go.

I may have the same problem, but haven't checked yet. I have an Echo GT-225, but i'm assuming they're similar enough. Started bogging down a few days ago when i tried to throttle it. Never really done any maintenance on it since i've had it, so maybe it's just time. I usually do about half-throttle because i didn't want any premature wear & tear and it seems to burn fuel less quickly, but more recently i have been running it a bit harder. I'll be back and let you know if it worked.

I could kinda hear by the way it sounded that there was a restriction, but didn't know where; to start things off i fired it up first to see if the problem was still there and aure enough it was. A then took the carb off and tore it down and checked if there was anything amiss, aside from a dirt & grime that i cleaned up all was fine. Fired it up again, same problem. Next i went to the exhaust and removed just the cover where the screen was and took to screen off and fired it up again with it off.. Ran flawlessly, it was back to how it was before it started bogging; albeit a bit louder lol. Thanks, i really appreciate that you took the time to make this video. I'm sure you've helped plenty of people who weren't quite sure what was going on. As for cleaning it, i used three different methods. First a lighter, next one of those really small mini torches, then a gas stove; the lighter took the longest to remove the carbon, mini torch was good, but ran out of fuel, but i found the stove top to be quickest. Would've used a real torch, but i don't have one. I put it back on and it, again, ran flawlessly. Just wanted to add that in case anyone was curious. Subscribed.

Air cleaner cover and choke plate carburetor mount is put on backwards. The choke lever should be facing the recoil starter.

Buy a ddm muffler for a goped use some hi temp gasket maker and boom more power . You can also modify the headkit but that's complicated for most .
