I must say the 8K footage looks amazing, when you compare it with the sony a6700 I was like wow it it very close on image quality! didn't expect an action camera can deliver those features in 2023, insta360 is a leap forward than DJI or GoPro that stuck with traditional form factor and functions...i mean why not being innovative when you can. having 4k 120fps is on the same page already, but those features are unique on the ace pro.... i have placed my order, thaks fo the review!

I was less than 24 hours away from purchasing a DJI Action 4 when this was released so I waited for the Ace Pro's (unsponsored) reviews. I do like the slightly smaller and cleaner form factor of the Action 4 and the red border around the Ace Pro's lens is annoying to me (personal preference) but I prefer the colours of the Ace Pro footage which is the most important point.

Thank you! The footage is stabilized in-camera with the Ace Pro, so there is no need for post stabilization like with One R / RS.

I've seen white balance issues on some other review videos. One had the sky significantly bluer than the same footage from the DJI Action 4. Did you notice that or anything that could account for it?

Might be the colour profile being used. There are a few built in, not just the HDR mode.

Yeah, agree. There was talk about the Pocket not having the removable battery. So longevity wise, they're a bit apart. Though the durability of the screen/flat ribbon cable has been a talking point as well. I can't wait the few days until mine arrives in time for some track days (night time here in the Middle East) . This will be my first 'action' camera and I hope I can do something about the 'softness' on the Ace Pro. (It seems the focus distance is one thing, the softness overall compared to Go Pro/DJI seems another thing). 8K however looked on par with Go Pro 4k. Maybe Hybrid Shooter can comment. (I Know youtube loves to compress things), but there's a huge jump between his B roll camera and this action cam.

@@andreas9119 The softness is one of the things fixed by FW updates that I have talked about at 0:42. Just use medium sharpness setting. You can basically forget what you heard in release-date reviews. 8K from Ace Pro is far, far ahead of GoPro's 4K, definitely not on par.

I agree, one of the best, thorough reviews, unbiased it appears, lots of great info. Thank you! I've been leaning towards the Action 4 because of reported user friendliness. But Hero 12 has been on sale at $349 USD for a while now. But man, I hated my Hero 8 Black, not sure I want to go back. $449 is getting steep, but the features and video quality look great. I don't care much about low lighting personally. The user friendliness seems to exist on the Ace Pro. I've heard some reviews say there's really no overheating or glitchiness. But the camera just came out, and not a ton of reviews just yet. But I appreciate this well edited and very informative review of the Ace Pro and comparison to the other two action cameras!

@@Yuchai_Thailand Not really. If you want action camera specifically for close up shots, you might want to get an older one, such as Hero 8 or Osmo Action 1. Those have smaller sensors, so they can focus much closer.

Great comparison. Is have so concerns after watching your video. 1- some clips seems to be out of focus, specially when blogging. 2- horizon leveling on insta makes a much larger crop on image than GoPro horizon block in linear.

@@TacBlades As long as the screen is locked in folded position, it is just as durable as the normal screen. The mechanism is very solid, so it will also survive reasonable amount of damage. "Insta terms for adverts only wanted comparison against hero" this is a blatant lie. There was actually an OA4 specs comparison in the PDF with enclosed information to help creators when comparing Ace Pro and Osmo Action 4. Next time please check source of you information before spreading this kind of "fake news".

You do look out of focus in the sound test close to the end of the video. I hate that so many action cameras dont focus closer and need filters when you have to vlog with them. Great camera for povs tho

Yes, but people also hate poor low light performance of older action cameras. Low light and close focus are unfortunately contradicting requirements without autofocus.

The vlogging stabilisation is weird. Makes it look like you're moving around while the scenery is rock solid. Is there a less aggressive mode? Also, does anyone in PAL regions care about 25p these days unless they work in broadcast TV? Anyway, great review as always. I'm very tempted by this.

Great review once again. As a vlogging camera, this might be the best option, but as an action camera, the GoPro 12 and DJI action 4 might be better due to the replaceable lens protection cover.

I recently bought the AcePro. I was impressed by the image quality, ease of use and user experience, but I had two significant issues. Firstly, the USB door was broken upon arrival. It never attached properly on device. i saw another KZfaqr and some Reddit users had the same problem. In contacted Insta360 who sent me a replacement door. Secondly, after minimal usage for a few days, the battery took about 3.5 hours to fully charge. The socket, plug and cable are all OK because they charged my Action 4 from 1% to 100% in 45 minutes. I returned the AcePro. I accept I'm probably unlucky and got a faulty device, but as this is my first Insta360 purchase, my first impression is that they have quality control issues. I'm not confident that a replacement unit won't also develop similar problems in future hence the full return. It is unfortunate.

i had to activate this with MY PHONE. took me forever to accomplish it... why is that, and the information they gathered just to let me use the camera is just nuts.. now im wandering if the camera is really mine or is china just letting me use it a while.. can this camera be operated OFF GRID no gps, no internet , NO PHONE connections .... no china control ??????

That is not China specific, non-Chinese companies such as Apple, GoPro or Samsung won't allow you to use their device without the same activation process either. Once you activate it, no connection is required.

That is a compromise between revealing detail and making the screen too dark. If you don't like, just don't use Pure Video mode, then you will get exposure similar to the GoPro.

@@markr041 Not without underexposing shadows, which would also be a “user error” by that logic. That is why the dynamic range - the range between the brightest and the darkest part of the frame where the camera can capture detail, is so important. Also, the camera should be able to the exposure correctly, so no, it is not a user error.

@markr041 No, neither has real Log gamma curve. In reality, they are equivalent to D-cinelike at best. That is actually a good choice because action cameras don’t have sufficient SnR to shoot real Log.

@@TheHybridShooter you had previously stated that even large glass lenses will struggle to resolve 25MP on MFT and 40MP on APSC. How are plastic lenses going to resolve a 40MP 1/1.3" sensor? Or was the assumption of pixel density being a problem wrong? It would be nice if you could make a comparison with the 3 action cameras and how much detail they capture.

I like your reviews but consider this: an action camera is meant for action, it is not for walking review. The most action you show is driving a car. If you do your review in a real adventure you would see it all very different. Ace is an action camera that is not good for real action, I can name one main reason : the lens cover is not replaceble. You can throw the camera away if you scratch the lens. There is some poor support of insta360 for the first year, however you have to pay the postage and wait without camera for the repair 🙃🙃🙃 everyone who uses action camera for real adventures and not for walking in the streets and parks must use something like GoPro or DJI. Do not get fooled by the marketing. Review action cameras in actual actions and then see whether they are any good for what they are advertised (= not for walking and talking).

Thank you! I disagree. More people use action cameras for vlogging, travelling, car shots and all-round use rather than for "actual action" these days. They definitely are for walking and talking at least as much as they are for action. It is the same thing as with SUV that are mostly used for city driving. Therefore, I don't intend to change the way that I review action cameras. Replaceable cover would be nice, but it will be possible to buy a protective cover soon. That should solve the issue.

I usually appreciate your objective presentations of equipment, but not this time. You didn't mention many disadvantages of this camera, especially the non-replaceable lens cover. This disqualifies the Insta360 as an action camera. At most, it could be a vlogging camera. But not for action. From what I see, none of the camera-provided KZfaqrs talk about this strong disadvantage. Has Insta banned it?

No, there is no ban, I just didn't mention it. There are 40+ points covered in this video, not everything makes it into the video. I don't find it to be as important as you, it definitely doesn't disqualify it as an action camera for me, I will just get a lens cover. I am not aware of "many disadvantages" that are not mentioned.

I've gone with a lens and screen protector for next to nothing , along with a small D clip carabiner case. I plan on using it in a car, so for some it's not a major issue in tandem with Insta's stance on customer paying shipping/they'll replace lens if anything happens. Plenty other reviewers with nearly every model Go pro said they've never had issues. So unless you're a dirtbiker and shooting rocks at your lenses, you should be ok.

Also You haven't notice the lack of 10-bit recording, that GoPro and Action 3 have. It is not an issue (bug), but should be noticed in honest review. Especially by such an accurate reviewer like you. After watching several dozens of Insta360 reviews I increasingly doubt the honesty of top KZfaqrs @@TheHybridShooter

The insta 360 1” sensor was the worst camera ever sold by any manufacturer. Just seeing it next to the ace pro reminds me of the waste of money 550usd I think I spent on that trash bin smh

There is no camera called "Insta360 1" sensor". There was One RS and One R with 1" sensors, but both were very capable devices, so you are probably not talking about those.

Have to say having watched some of your videos before, for the first time I am disappointed.. I don’t think this is a fair representation as it fails to address one big failure, that being that the front lens cover cannot be removed. If that gets scratched as is likely for an action camera you will have to live with it or send it to have the lens cover replaced. Additionally I note you chose to compare this with the GoPro and not the DJI action 4, maybe because as noted in other reviews the Ace Pro does not stack up that well against it. I would hope your review is not another of those tainted by the supply of the camera from Insta themselves.

All you tubers who got review units compared it with go pro 12 because it is inferior. I will choose dji action 4 over ace pro is because I can get adventure pack at same cost.

The reason why every new non-GoPro action camera, including Osmo Action 4, is being compared to the GoPro is that the GoPro is the most popular action camera and the general public knows what it can and cannot do. That is why it is being used as a reference.

I am also disappointed by your comment. This review covers about 40 points and I don't think that implying that the review is "tainted" because it misses one point is particularly fair either. I will continue to compare every action camera to the GoPro for the reasons explained above. I definitely don't think that the Ace Pro does not stack up well against the Action 4 (which I also got from DJI).

@@TheHybridShooter To be fair I did not suggest the review could be tainted based on the lens cover alone, although it is a pretty big point to miss out. I was also interested to find you based this against the GoPro without even a mention about the DJI Action 4. I appreciate that you may well review the Ace Pro against other action cameras, but others watching your review may make their purchase decisions based on what you present. I am aware of the allegation that some reviewers who were provided with pre-production units had a removable lens cover, but given explicit instructions not to mention it. Maybe the removeable lens cover had to be fixed in final production in order to maintain the waterproof integrity. You make no mention in your review whether you were provided with your camera by Insta or you purchased it yourself, hence my comment. Reviews so far seem a mixed bag with some questioning its use as an action camera and liken it more to a vlogging camera, if the intention is to cover both then likely there has to be compromises.

@jamesmartin532 You can get a lens cover if it is that big of a deal for you. It seemed more like you were telling me why I am comparing it to GoPro, rather than being interested in my reasons. I don't intend to make comparisons with other action cameras, I stand behind everything that I have presented in this video, so I don't see an issue with that. At 0:29 it is clearly written, that the review unit was provided by Insta360. The instruction was not to show the removable lens cover, because the final version will not have it, there was no instruction to not talk about fixed lens cover. I don't watch other reviews, but I guess that 0:42 should explain why the reviews are a mixed bag.
