What’s up everybody. In todays video, I will be installing oil “catch cans” on both of my diesel trucks. My wife’s truck is a 2018 Cummins (Non-Deleted) and my truck is a 2016 Cummins (Deleted & Tuned).
The purpose of a catch can is to prolong the life of your turbo, because by factory, the combusted gas coming off the top of the crank case is routed back down to the turbo and unfortunately, this combusted gas coming off the crank case contains dirty oil and sludge. A “catch can” will capture this oil and sludge, allowing fresh air to be routed to your turbo or you can route the air to the atmosphere using the included breather/filter. This is a very inexpensive upgrade that can save your turbo from prolonged abuse.

10/6/22 Update: I did get a check engine light on my wife’s truck after a few days. I assume the computer does not like the bottom hose plugged. I plugged in a OBD2 port scanner and cleared the codes and had no issues after. If it ever does come back on I can always add a hose from the “out” port back down to the hose below, remove the plug, and connect the hoses with a sleeve and 2 small clamps.
10/21/22 Update: The check engine light came on again. I added the hose from the “out” port of the catch can back down to the bottom hose that I originally plugged, reset the codes, and have had no issues since.

Aftermarket catch cans are a great idea. Only potential issues I see are that if the catch can overflows and hot oil comes out through the filter, that oil could catch fire as it drips on the hot exhaust manifold. You are also more likely to drip oil on the exhaust when taking it apart due to being mounted so closely to the turbo instead of higher, which is going to make dumping it out more involved than just unthreading the bottom section of the can.

You have to gut the ccv filter if you havent. The pressure the turbo relieve will try to push out pretty much every seal the motor has when the motor doesnt have the turbo to suck the wir through the filter.

Very nice Camera work, and good explanations. On my F-150 Ecoboost engine, my catch can "out" line goes to my intake manifold fitting, and of course the PVC line goes into the catch can IN side. and my turbos are fed from the air box for the Ford 2.7 and 3.5 engines., FYI Ford guys & Gals. But almost same easy Install. Cheers from Motown!

Works best if your truck is older of if it’s is deleted and/or tuned. Some of the newer trucks with all the emissions equipment can throw codes if you use a catch can.

good video thanks, looks as if the atf stick on the wifes truck is going to be kinda hard to pull?? do u think some sort of media can be used in the bottom of the catch can to absorb the oil or would it block the exit to the top filter???

I’ve seen others add a steel wool type pad on the bottom. I deleted my crank case filter which was saturated from previous owner. 🤷🏽‍♂

i would personally run the catch can with the line back to the intake. For 1 , if you get an aftermarket air intake there should be little to no negative pressure in the intake system , meaning its not really pulling a ton of air through the PCV but instead just relieving pressure. Second you WANT to have slight vacuum on the crank case , any pressure in the crank case is technically bad , too much with blow out seals and gaskets , as well as cause a loss in engine performance than CAN be measured on the dyno. the catch can is going to catch 90% of your particulate if you keep it clean , draining it at every oil change. With the reduced vacuume on the pcv system by upgrading the intake system and filter as well as keeping a clean intake filter , and adding this catch can which is serviceable and cleanable i would think there is absolutely zero reason to worry about a harmful amount of particulate making it to the turbo. Possibly super fine oil mist but by the time it hits the turbo even the mist will have been filtered if you buy a high quality catch can that has a bronze or metallic filter element / media in it.
@McCallieOrchestra
@McCallieOrchestra Ай бұрын
That would nullify the EGR delete on his truck. The point is to breathe cleaner air into the engine instead of oily used gasses. These diesels make more than enough positive crankcase pressure, so much so that blow-by is a serious issue and pressure needs to be decreased. When you watch videos of trucks with diesel engines for sale, they often unscrew the oil filler cap and set it atop the tube to demonstrate how severe the the blow-by is. That's why many Cummins owners upgrade their valve covers with ones that have multiple ports to help ventilate the excess pressure either to a catch can or the atmosphere.

Why not use both ports, I mean the catch can is catching all the gunk, iam going to run my out on the can back to the turbo intake, this will pull some vacuum from crank case, seems like other way it will bleed off just fine, but at high rpms iam not sure, thanks for the video,...it did help me with routing everything 😁 cheers

I did throw some code so I added a hose from the out port back to the turbo intake and that helped. My wife's truck is in the shop now for 2 weeks so far with leaking oil from the primary so it needs a new gasket and new engineered bolts for some reason as they said a new bulletin came out from the factory to use new style bolts. Still don't have it back yet but when it's done I'll look at the catch can again.

Have you had any issues with excessive pressure after install? I did filter delete and I’m getting oil coming out of my dipstick. If I hook it back up to factory it’s fine but I notice I’m leaking oil at my turbo. I recent ordered the catch can and am going to install it to see if that fixes my issue.

You have to gut the CCV Filter in the valve cover. In stock form, the turbo aids in drawing through the restrictive filter. You need to gut it if you vent to the atmosphere.

First time 6.7 owner, i bought the same catch can as you yet to install it though. i have a little elbow and a ccv filter that had came on the truck and would like to put a catch can on. I have a aftermarket S467 turbo with second gen manifold. Im not sure if the oem ccv is stripped id imagine it is ill look before i install. But my question is if i plug the out would that cause harm to the engine at all. I know with stock none deleted youd want to route it to the turbo. But im just wondering what i should do with this

It’s hard to say, but if you’re not deleted, you might throw codes on your dash. You might have to route the out Port from from the catch can down to the turbo hose.

It did throw a code, still ran fine though. I just cleared it. I eventually took it off as I needed to get some recalls fixed. But, I wonder if plugging the top port instead of a small filter would create better pressure to stop throwing codes?

This was my question. I think I'm going to route mine back to the turbo. The catch can should in theory catch all the oil before it gets to the turbo. But if it's routed to the turbo it'll still create vacuum and not throw codes

Yes, I then tried to connect the “out” port hose back down below and eventually it threw a code. I ended up taking it off. One thing I didn’t try which I might is plug the top vent hose (remove mini filter) and plug the hole. I wonder if that allows too much vent and the censor notices and throws a code but not f it were sealed more maybe it wouldn’t?

Did you plug the top (remove filter)? The newer trucks have very strict electronic censors. If you can’t clear the code, you may need a tuner to override this censor or you may not be able to use a catch can.
