YOOOO!
hope your all doing well, today were installing a hive mini thermostat on a Baxi 830 Combo boiler, and although many boilers and stats have different connections, essentially they're all the same.
feel free to message me on instagram if you'd like any information!

Thanks for the video Shaun installed plenty of the normal sized hives never the mini ones so your video has been a good insight for me. Couple of points to note on the normal sized hives that are single channel ones the wiring instructions are wrong on the back of the receiver the normally open and normally closed connections are the wrong way round. Nice to see the ferrules being used as bare stripped flex falls out of the connections if they are not mega tight as they are poor quality and as you say hub on first until it downloads any updates then once the yellow light starts flashing switch the boiler on to switch the receiver on and put the batteries in the stat. Sorted! Thanks for the upload.

@@Cablesmith can I rack your brain on something see if my suspicions are correct?? So basically steam got into customers socket which blew , they got someone in who wago’d the cable and filled it all in before checking it was working (spoiler alert it wasn’t) upon testing I’m getting a reading higher on the incoming than the outgoing. My guess is there’s carbon build up and the wago isn’t connected properly as it’s not connected to the copper but the carbon does that sound about right to you before I go ripping through this wall tomorrow morning lol , literally just thinking clipping half inch off each side of the cable reconnect the wago and that should effectively solve the issue to the ring main ?

Lucky you didn't link the live to the common terminal. The switching side is all low voltage 12V DC - would've needed a new boiler pcb

The switching side on a baxi 800 isn't low voltage it's 230 volts one cable comes from the switched side of the clock if fitted on the boiler the other is the heating call wire. The only low voltage connections are for an outdoor temperature sensor and an open therm controller which are away from the mains connections

Worth noting - The single channel Hive switch operates at either low voltage or main voltage, whereas the duel channel operates at just the high voltage.

The 4 on the receiver back plate is for a dual zone channel receiver, For heat and hot water.
@Cablesmith
@Cablesmith Жыл бұрын
Ah right I assume that would be in the instructions for whatever receiver it’s for, my instructions just said not used but that’s for a combi only

Great video Sean,I have a Bosch combi boiler with a Siemens rj10 wireless thermostat and I was thinking of changing it to a smart thermostat so I could control it when I was away,do you think Hive is one of the best or do you recommend a different make
@Cablesmith
@Cablesmith Жыл бұрын
I couldn’t really comment on hive much because this is my only experience with it. I will say tho, the responsiveness of the stat was a little delayed but it wouldn’t put me off it. I personally have had a nest for years now it’s it’s been excellent. And hardwired stat too so no batteries. The nest feels a lot more premium and solid also.
@pikricky
@pikricky Жыл бұрын
@@Cablesmith Thanks for the reply Sean,I checked out the Nest as well as it had a good review,unfortunately I don't have any wiring in the walls for a hard wired one so I have to go down the wireless route

Hello ive used the exiting cable from my boiler to my old reciever howber it only has 4 cables and not a earth cable. Does this matter?
@Cablesmith
@Cablesmith 8 ай бұрын
it’s typical of a gas fitter to do that, the cable should be earthed yes

I put a hive in mine and noticed exactly the same, all the instructions are online (took me a while to find) and nothing in the box which I thought was mad.

I have the old version of the wall thermostat and I see that they have a new mini thermostat. However, they did not fix the biggest flaw of the old thermostat - lack of an always on display. Also, combis generally don't switch 240V. The black/grey is more like a relay switch - there should be a wiring diagram in the boiler. Nice work.
@Cablesmith
@Cablesmith Жыл бұрын
Yep I noticed the display thing, my nest is off but it displays as you walk near it which is handy. as for the switching, this Baxi was in fact 230v on the switching.
@sidremey
@sidremey Жыл бұрын
@@Cablesmith Yes, you're right - I just read the baxi 800 manual. I see that it supports OpenTherm which is supposed to be better than 240V switching because it allows the stat to modulate the temperature of the boiler (i.e. run it at less than 100%). Nest supports OpenTherm but Hive does not so Nest might be a better choice for those boilers that support OpenTherm. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aaddq7dq3ZbKn40.html
