Installing a Sailboat Engine Solo Ep. 12

Lost Pearl’s new engine finally arrived and in this episode I set about getting it installed. There are a bunch of hiccups that prevent me from getting it fully installed into the engine bay at the boatyard so I have to do the final mounting to the transmission myself on a rock and roll mooring ball.

An alternative to original style boat motors is an air cooled Chinese diesel. You save a lot of weight and money. Reliability is so much better without salt water cooling. I have the smallest 168F diesel, and it is superior for keeping the battery charged and small output to an existing prop. There are a variety of larger sizes too, but I encourage boaters to shrink horsepower. Tips: Mount it on a thick aluminum plate. Avoid lowest idle and zooming over 2000 RPM. Watch oil consumption during break in as it will be very high. My 20 MM shaft wants an inch adapter to fit a seven inch pulley and a drive coupler.

I haven’t heard of these Chinese diesels you speak of. Air cooling would be tricky as there is no easy way to vent the heat on my boat. Interesting concept though

@@OnnoKok Sichuan Sifa MB168F. It has top quality castings, steel gears, and meticulous measurements. Air cooling? Dry hot air. Open the front hatch. Open the companionway. Run a fan. A small price to pay, to satisfy the gods of reliability and lightness.

hey man I hay a choey lee 41 in rock and roll harbor and I'm i the exact same situation. I need to repower and I'm trying to navigate how and where etc. I would love to buy you a beer and pick you brain. or a decaf mocha latte or whatever. awesome video. arrrgh.

@@OnnoKok with the Isuzu, don't ever let it overheat. They're good solid motors but they don't like to be abused. I know you wouldn't and all, but...

@@RodFleming-World thank you. My biggest fear is not noticing a blockage with the raw water pump or something. I’m going to be adding a water temp alarm in case it overheats.

@@OnnoKok good idea. The alloy cylinder head will definitely warp if it gets too hot and then, no end of bother till you get it skimmed/replaced. They like to run quite cool, these things. You've got a nice big engine room which will help with that. BTW if you have a thermostat in the cooling circuit, use a 160 F rather than 180F. (Some people just sling them but strictly you should use a blanking plate with a 1inch hole to maintain design pressure, if you do.)

@@RodFleming-World the thermostat that came with the engine switches at about 176°.
