A very big project for us has finally come to fruition, the replacement of our old Perkins engine with a brand new 85Hp Turbo Diesel engine from BETA MARINE USA! Thanks so much to Beta Marine USA for their help with fulfilling this project, and special thanks of course to all of you who helped us fund the project last season, helping us get yet another step closer to bringing our Pacific dreams to reality! Love to all you guys, we've had a rough few weeks putting this all together, but I hope you enjoy the video that summarizes all the major steps we went through.. next step, sea trials!
Cheers,
Captain Rick, Maddy, Ricci, & TIKI

It's so nice to see that young Ricardo is sitting up and taking nourishment, as the old saying goes. Here's hoping you make it through the big ditch and into the Sea of Cortez to shelter from pacific storms. If you don't go that route, Panama does not lack for great cruising grounds. (I'm probably preaching to the choir, lol.)

When moving boat with a tender it is always much more efficient to push from the stern or side tie from the hip then to tow by a line. When towing by a line most of the energy is diverted to trying to keep the tender in front of the heavy boat rather than into moving it.

Well done Rick, I don't know how you felt when they were working getting the old Perkins out and the new Beta Marine 85 engine in, but my heart was in my mouth and I had a twitchy bum. The Beta sounds sweet, very smooth, they are a very good engine. Good old fashion engineering,I think you made a good choice. Happy Sailing.

Well done! I renewed my 40 year old engine this year, and I used the same manufacturer (Volvo Penta) to reduce the chance of fitting issues - the conversion brackets lined up perfectly and I had it fitted in a day. A Beta would have been cheaper, but I was worried about the alignment - having seen your problems, I'm glad I spent the extra!!

Well done! I have learned from years of experience, that when planning a new major refit job, one needs to double, or even triple, the estimate of time one will need to complete the task over the "engineering" estimate. Not your fault that it took so long. I think it is a miracle that you got this job done without putting your vessel on the hard. Those massive cranes, which normally handle much larger loads, were masterfully operated so you had the best of results. In addition, I know that all the hook-ups of the cooling, exhaust systems, and prop shaft alignment and connection, took way more time than just the lift out and lift in of the engines, that you showed us in this episode. What a relief to have that job done and out of the way.

Yeah... for anything resembling a drop in replacement, you'd need a Perkins of the same model. And not even then, since over the years, Rick's engine received some modifications... ;-)

Captain Rick. Glad to see the engine swapped, but….. I would reach out to Beta Marine to see if they can provide alternate mounts. I wouldn’t leave the engine supported on those bolt extensions for very long as they haven’t been properly engineered to withstand the forces and vibration of the engine. I might be wrong and they could last for the life of the rubber mounts themselves but better safe than sorry.
