I call it a lock nail but it also comes in handy in a few other applications such as making a header for a door and having to sandwich a piece of osb in between the 2x6s. If you just straight nail you don’t get them to suck tight and stay tight.

@@carsongoodman5581 I haven't used nails for framing for decades. Construction screws all the way. Same with hanging drywall.
@carsongoodman55814 жыл бұрын
oltedders for drywall I would have to agree but nails definitely have an advantage in some places and screws do aswell. I use both in framing. Nails can be set very fast and locknailing can give the same result as a screw, they are also cheaper. No charging batteries. I mostly used screws for mitered beams or for things like ledgers and joists. From the ceiling up in definitely using a nail gun for hanging the rafters and for sheathing the roof.

I used cyano for the first time on some door molding on a recent bathroom remodel after watching your last video about it and as a DIYer I'll probably never go back to the old method. It came out perfect and was so much faster and easier. I can see why pros might not want to with the extra cost but when you're doing it rarely as a DIYer it's definitely worth it.

When I'm running baseboards, I try not to use a tape measure and introduce errors. I'll hold the (overly long) piece in place, and use a scrap on the other surface (above the piece I'm marking) and make a mark with a very fine mechanical pencil (0.9mm), and put a line (away from the length mark) showing which way the miter is to be cut. . For the short runs, there is usually a cut off piece that is long enough to have a few inches trimmed off, so the same process on that. I will also go around before I start with a Starett miter gauge and write down all the angles directly on the wall where it will be covered (inside and outside corners) so that I have the setting for my saw for when I do the outside miters, or for doing the inside copes.

That's a good idea, holding the scrap piece up so you can measure to the long point of the miter, then being able to cut the miter first and pull your measurement from the long point. I will definitely try that next time I have to cut tall base that my saw can't handle without cutting flat

Some advice? Keep some wax paper close to keep from gluing to the floor. Stand your pieces, easier to align the heights I like to check my fits to the casings first, scribe and cut if needed. CA glue is awesome to work with. I have used it in exterior applications as well. It works well with the new vinyl boards as well

I was big on just using pva glue but lately Ive been doing a whole lot of base and found the CA glue method alot faster and I'm getting nicer results. One thing I would say this when you have that springing affect where you just push the peice in and even if the the miter holds its best to go back to the saw and fix your angle by half a degree or whatever. It will look better, your peice will lay more strait against the wall, and their isn't stress on the joint. It would suck if you came back after its painted and the miter opened up.

Definitely keep that bead away from the outside edge though, because if there is any squeeze out, you have almost no time to wipe it off before it sets (especially when using activator). @jamesalexander83684 жыл бұрын
The laminate floor is going to move, a lot, so what you put there won’t work. I suggest you remove the baseboards and apply a thermoplastic caulking where the plates and subfloor meet. Silverfish usually mean there’s a moisture issue
@vancouvercarpenter4 жыл бұрын
He's right about caulking to the floor. Not the best idea. Also, its VERY difficult to make it look good and often just cracks later. Might just need to live with the little dudes. Maybe try naming them and talking to them. It will help you both feel more comfortable:)

Is 1.75” nails long enough to get into the stud through plaster walls?
@simonmonty7171 Жыл бұрын
I know your comment is a year old so I sure hope you found the answer by now but if it helps anyone reading lol They usually recommend 3 times the thickness of what you are nailing when it comes to baseboard most are around 1/2 inch thick meaning you need a inch and half. Considering the baseboard is around 1/2 inch, the drywall usually also 1/2 inch where I'm from it leaves pretty much 1/2 out on the other side of the wall and if you hit stud then it's solid enough for baseboard considering you usually put latex caulking after installing the baseboard which also serves as glue.. it's not going anywhere. If the baseboard or the drywall is thicker than what I previously mentionned then I'd suggest longer nails than an inch and a half.

When I do a measurement that is 64 1/2 plus a little, I will think 64 1/2 plus 1 or 2, or minus 1, thinking of the 64ths of an inch between the typical 1/16 inch marks on a tape. So in other words 64 1/2 plus 1 64th or 2 64ths
