It's time to install the laminated beam to support the roof, so we can open up the back of this barn.

That is a massive opening on that lean to building but to manage that on your own is a real accomplishment - well done.

WHAT a job! Aren't tractors the BEST? I know I've been able to do so much more with mine than I could ever do without it, but holy smokes! I'd NEVER have attempted a job like this without help. GREAT WORK! Rebecca's going to be so proud!!

Wow, impressive figuring out a way to get that done! And without having to take out the fence by the persimmon tree, just by the skin of your teeth. That looks really good. Suggestion for you - when you make your saw cuts in the concrete blocks, consider making them one hole inside your load-bearing column, and then fill the hole with rebar and mortar to strengthen the wall. Might even want to do that before cutting the wall out. Then, put a solid metal bollard on either end to keep the tractor from ever touching the wall and knocking your support out from under your columns. Those are tight quarters. You’ll end up losing a couple feet of opening but the risk of knocking a concrete block wall down is not insignificant and the repercussions would be severe. Good luck!

Adapt and overcome is the motto of the Marine Corp and you did just that with the opening. I noticed you took it slow and easy and was careful of what you did and by yourself, you did a very good job. The tractor was just the ticket to get that header up there where you could secure it and it worked out well and now you are closer to getting the barn ready for the livestock.

Great job. Very happy you added enough Jack studs to support the load. 6ft opening needs 2. 12 ft opening needs 3. Anything over 12 ft must be Engineered in my jurisdiction. The supplier can do that for us. Also, that Header could have been placed as single layers and nailed in place. It is easier, especially when working alone. Very pleased that you were working carefully and nice job. 😀

As a thought, a smaller hand-held laser level may work for you if you turn it on the side so the beam angles up, move it to make the beam hit the end of where you want your beam to be and mark the block/board at ground level. Then move to the other end of where you want your beam, repeat that same alignment with the laser beam aimed upward, mark the base, then measure between the marks. I have no doubt you will make everything work, and will do whatever it takes to make that happen, but this may be worth considering for future cases where you are working alone.
