INSTALLING NEW TRANSOM MARINE PLYWOOD CORE | FULL BOAT RESTORATION - PART 3

Hey guys, hope you are enjoying this great little boat restoration! In this episode we install the brand new marine plywood in the transom of the voyager LTD!
We used epoxy resin and filler to combine the ply together and glue into the transom, some may disagree (most use polyester) but we believe the epoxy is a great substitute if the surfaced is prepped well as its lighter and stronger.

I wish i seen fiberglass putty and woven/matt glass on the face of the stringers mating to the transom. Great work though

Well done! Been considering this project with my boat - discovered the transom was not up to snuff when I started planning a video to fill some holes on my transom. Congrats on the 1k subs!

Amazing work! It's incredible watching you guys turn a completely rotted transom into practically something brand new. If you don't mind me asking, what is the rough costs to do something like this? I have an 85' bowrider and I notices cracks around the bottom of the transom so I suspect it has the same problem.

Just saw your video. Why not use coosa board or some other composite? I bought a single sheet and can replace a couple of transoms with it. Will NEVER rot and also stronger. Price has come down for composites as well.

Hey Bob thank you for watching, really appreciate it! i decided to go with ply because yes the cost is a factor but i have a good amount of experience working with ply and not familiar with composite materials. The state of the transom wasn't actually to bad being 40+ years old, if i can get another 20/30 years out of her im happy! :)

Well done mate, good video. Im about to embark on a similar quest myself and was wondering a couple of things. Did you consider laminating the 2 pieces of ply first or would it have been difficult to fit them in ? Could you drill some bolts through with large washers and tighten to bring the 2 pieces of ply together. then remove once set?

Hi Tony thank you for watching the series, yes defiantly considered, and more or less fiberglass between the ply boards is a better way of encounting this. As i only had so much room working from the outside i deciding to epoxy fill between the ply to ensure it bonded. Glassing between the layers works well especially if your doing transom from the inside, as your not limited with thickness! i just clamped tight to minimize holes in the transom to repair at a later stage but i don't see an issue, maybe some research can help you with that question. I'm far from professional but with the experience i have had this is the best advice i can give you :)

Richard Woodard all good Richard hope it goes well, we decided the transom had to be done on the outside as I wanted to change the fibreglass, if you can do it from the inside it would be more beneficial!

Your thickened epoxy (the white stuff) didn't look like it stuck to the hull very well. Too many contaminates.

The actual video is fine but utube with all the adds and crap make this a very painful exercise. These fools have time to waste and I like many others don't. I don't wanna see anything other than what I've requested.
