We are back in project mode this week as Billy brings you along for the installation of our new Rainman Watermaker. We found out years ago that having a watermaker is the single most important thing in being able to extend our time away from the dock and civilization. We went with the Rainman AC Electric naked high output model for many reasons but one of the main ones being that it is the same model we had aboard our last catamaran "Adrenaline" which worked incredibly well. Let us know if you have any questions about why we chose this one in the comments :)
Check out Rainman here: bit.ly/Rainmam

Really great video of a well planned installation. A couple of comments/observations: 1. The RO mounting bracket is textured on the back for gluing so you don't have to use an intermediate plate if you don't want. 2. It's fine to share the intake through hull. Rainman doesn't like to compete for water though, so make sure it has plenty of flow available when making water. 3. If you use the Rainman before the 7 day autoflush timer cycle completes, the system will flush when you turn finish making water, then reset the timer for 7 days again. If the timer loses power for other reasons, on power resumption it will trigger a flush cycle and reset for 7 days again. You addressed these points, but it might not be clear to people.

People don't buy watermakers because water is "expensive" - they buy them so they don't have to go refill their tanks. Billy didnt' talk about it but it gives you FREEDOM to use water as you wish without worrying about when you might have to go somewhere and fill your tanks. Most boats have tanks that aren't large enough for extended times on the hook. Want to take another shower? No problem? Want to wash the boat with fresh water? no problem. That's why people get watermakers.

It makes the beauty of remote anchorages, extended stays and the ability to have some good luxuries instead of a camping feel. Laundry, showers and the lack of water anxiety is a making the life on your boat a home. Congratulations!

RO takes everything out of the water including things you need like fluoride and minerals. You can purchase packages that will add these necessities back to the water. For tank, water we also have a Waterdrop G2 Reverse Osmosis System under our galley sink for drinking and cooking water. We put hydrogen peroxide in our tank to inhibit bacteria growth in the tank.

I have always built my own water makers from all standard off the shelf parts. I have a 7" color touchscreen plc controlling my water maker. For redundancy I have a engine driven high pressure pump. Whenever I am running the engine I can make water.

Sorry for the additional comment but something else to consider. Many jurisdictions particularly those that have natural reefs have regulations on releasing brine into the water. Most vessels have brine collection tanks and something called a diffuser system that constantly mixes seawater with the brine solution to get the concentration below 40,000 mg/L, a level considered safe for discharge. It's not entirely necessary to have a diffuser system if you have a brine tank and release the tank off-shore in deep waters where the brine solution becomes so diluted that there is no impact on the reef environment. Just be sure you check your local jurisdictions on the continuous release of brine into the ocean and I would advise against it if you are moored in a shallow natural reef area. The added benefit of pumping it out of a tank instead of letting it trickle out down the side of your vessel is the impact the brine will have on the finish on your boat. You really want to pump that stuff away from the hull if you can.

Great video, great details and clean install. Only additional thing I would’ve done while testing the system is turning the pump switch to on without the panel to make sure it works, that way if you’ve ever lost the panel, there is no question that the pump switch works or not, just for a peace of mind.

12vdc water makers do not inherently make less water than AC. Production is a function of high pressure pump size and that means the size of the motor has to be adequate. A pump driven by a 1hp dc motor (regardless of voltage) will make just as much water as a 1hp ac motor.
@wjhann4836
@wjhann4836 6 ай бұрын
Perhaps he compared packages. So there might be 'only' 12V packages with smaller pumps. On top: (I don't know how much power you need for a gallon of water) If Billy wants 40 gallons per hour - that results in a big motor (shown in the video) and at 12V level would require huge cabeling between the batteries and that motor.
@hanfordcreek5309
@hanfordcreek5309 6 ай бұрын
Yes, the trade-off is in amps. Another plus for AC is, if you DIY (which I highly recommend ), AC motors are cheaper and more easily sourced.

This. Clearly they chose the brand first and then picked what they had available… because there absolutely are other brands that manufacture high output systems with DC power. Which is fine, they like the brand for the numerous reasons mentioned… but the claim about DC systems being inherently less productive is false.

To vent the heat out of that compartment with the pump (I had heat issue in camper compartment) I mounted a computer fan in the inside and used a S/S shower grid between the fan & bulkhead and the 4 fan screws hold it in place. What I find interesting are these water makers that make drinking water by pulling it from the air. They basically act as dehumidifiers, which could be another advantage. Right now they don't produce as much water as a regular water maker. I don't know the hit as far as electricity use compared to a regular water maker. All that could change as tech advances.

Love maintenance and installation videos! At around 30:18, with the membrane pressure very low, it looked like the green light for water quality was good? Super observant of you. Very good point. My guess is that he had been using the system before the recording of that video segment and there was still fresh water in the system. If he had just turned the Rainman on, the LED would be showing red for at least 90 seconds. If he had been running it unpressured for an extended period, the TDS probe may be dry at the end. The system uses conductivity as a proxy for TDS, so if it's dry, that is basically no conductivity, which would equate to 0ppm. In normal operation, the LED will be red when you start operating the system.

The issue with teflon tape over teflon paste is the tape could get inside and cause issues to systems components at least in hydaulics that is. I'm sure it's not good for water systems as well. Another great what and how to video. Is this watermaker proportional size to the size of your boat? So for a boat that is about 32ft or less mono, would a smaller watermaker suffice for a solo sailor? Also the cost of mantiance (filters, tubing ect) would be an interesting insight. Always top-notch work guys!

IMHO the size of the boat should be neglected. The mayor dimension should be the people who need the water. Perhaps you may look back how much water you needed in the past and calculate the watermaker according. - Too big, you may get into energy problems - too small you have to run it endless without having the necessary water. And the filter system in front has to be changed often. About the daily costs, Billy is the right man to answer.

@wjhann4836 thanks for the info. I'm just gathering info right now. I plan to get a boat in the future for carribien winds. So I'm asking questions now so in the future I'll have a small idea of what to expect.

@@0PsychosisMedia0 The only question I can't answer in any way: How much energy 'cost' a gallon of water. Normally that's a limiting factor why smaller boats still limit their water usage while using a water maker. As always: there's no free lunch.

I don't need AC where I live but I don't understand why it would need a raw water intake? In my limited experience a condensate drain yes but what does it do with raw water?

It uses water for heat exchange, instead of air for heat exchange like a normal ac unit on your house.
