Hey Devil Dog, Did my bump stops, steering stabilizer, sway bar links, and shocks on my 99 TJ this last weekend. The suspension is all stock so I didn’t have to use my spring compressor to get the front springs out. Tried to get the butt end of the stops out as you suggested. What a Cluster F***. I guess mine weren’t as dry rotted as yours. Took an hour and a half to get the first one out. Sat back and thought about it on the 2nd one. It was time to improvise, adapt, over come. Got out a pry bar a bit longer and a propane torch and heated the tip of the pry bar with the torch and melted through the bump stop all the way to the bottom of the cup being they are very dense rubber. Did that and basically cut the bottom of the rubber into 6 pieces them pried the cut pieces out of the cup. To be honest, it took longer to heat the pry bar then to pry the cut pieces out. Worked out very well and very time saving. Truly less frustrating. Also on the rears, I didn’t even pull the springs out, did it in between the coils of the springs and was able to put the stops back in through the coils and then pried the bumps into the cups with a pry bar using the spring as a fulcrum for the pry bar. Just a little added info to help your viewers out. Semper Fi brother, keep it up, great content, great and informative videos.

on the spot inside the front coils; on the axle, the "plate where the bump stop... smacks into"..... .. on yours is I see that it is flat plate on axle. Is that OEM? Asking to try to determine type bump stop mod was done to my TJ. Someone else did the lift before my purchase. There are kits that mod the bump stop setup by adding spacers to axle plate the stop smacks into and other kits that just add a longer bump stop from above and change nothing on the axle. But I dont know what OEM looks like. I have some disk in there but don't know if they are added as a kit... orrrr?? Presently have one bump stop that the cup rusted off and bump stop fell out. Both my stops and cups are a bit messed up anyway.... so trying to decipher what I have so I can order the right stuff. thanks in advance.

Ok, so....TECHNICALLY, what I replaced in this video, is called the "jounce". The flat spot on the axle on THIS Jeep is OEM. (IF) you have round discs on yours, those are most certainly bump stop risers, added with a lift. They drilled a hole on top of the stop, added discs and ran a bolt through them. This Jeep was bought with a 2" spring and 2" body lift already installed too, but no bump stop risers were on it.

To be honest, I wouldn't replace the cups or jounces. We've really built this Jeep over the summer and I'm not putting ours back on, so.....

@@ShockWaveOffroad In my case..... I have an oil pan clearance issue (TJ sports an MB 5cyl Turbo diesel). There is a ding in the oil pan as it is.. I think the bump stop mod is necessary to make the ding not turn into a bash and leak. Thanks for info.

@@ShockWaveOffroad did yuo replace the rubber stop with OEM lenght? If so how long is it? Again just trying to figure out what I got so can work forward. Mine are actually yellow as well so not stock.
@ShockWaveOffroad
@ShockWaveOffroad Жыл бұрын
@@coachgeo So, in my video description, there is a link for these exact same "bump stops". As for the length, I'd guess they're around 4 inches. That said, they should all be the same length. The discs on the axle pad you mentioned are there to make up the difference in the lift. The link in the video description should take care of your issue.

Very nice video! I do like those OEM+ switches. What shocks did you have on Grunt before the Fox shocks? Do you notice a big difference?
@ShockWaveOffroad
@ShockWaveOffroad 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, buddy! The old shocks were Pro Comp. The fronts weren't too bad, but the rear shocks were completely wasted, LOL. It does feel considerably more stable on the road, but I expect the biggest difference will be when she takes it to URE.

I'm curious why you didn't leave it in place before putting spring back on? instead you put the spring on and struggled fingerings that bumper back up in its hole.
@ShockWaveOffroad
@ShockWaveOffroad Жыл бұрын
I understand your confusion. However, with the jounce in place, there wasn't enough droop on the axle to get the spring back on. Every time I tried, I ended up knocking the jounce back out anyway, LOL! Won't have that problem now, cuz this Jeep has long arms and LOTS of droop.😁 Thanks for watching and the question! 🤘🏻

That's not a bump stop, its a Jounce, the bump stop is the metal cup that the jounce mounts into. Also, would it be possible to squeeze the jounce between the spring coils and not have to deal with the spring compressor? Thanks for sharing the video, Do you know if the TJ bump stop is screwed on, or is it a single piece with the bump stop extender?
@ShockWaveOffroad
@ShockWaveOffroad 3 жыл бұрын
The stop is a single piece with extender. I think it would be EXTREMELY unlikely to squeeze the "jounce" through the coils of the spring. You can try if you want, but I would think you'd waste more time than just pulling the springs.

I have a 2003 Sahara with a 2in BDS lift and just replaced all four of the Jounce without removing the springs/shocks. They fit between the extended springs with just a little soap. I used an old wood chisel to split up the old jounce and then to pry them out. A little more difficult to get the old ones out with the springs still in place and in the way but much easier than removing the springs/shocks/brakes etc. Hardest part of the entire project was rotating and lifting the 33x12.5s back onto the jeep! I'm getting too old and weak for that. :)

Hey Devil Dog, Is there any way to secure the jounce in the bump stop cup or just press in by hand with no adhesive or anything. Thanks for the Good Gouge, doing my bump stops and shocks this weekend on my 99 TJ that I daily drive, with 262000 miles on it. The video was very informative and enjoyed it. Semper fi
@ShockWaveOffroad
@ShockWaveOffroad Жыл бұрын
Semper Fi, bro! No need for any adhesive. If you look on the jounce cup, there are a couple indents that point up. So, when you press the jounce in, those indents hold it in place. Subsequently, that's why they're a pain in the ass to get out!😂🤣😂 Glad you liked the vid. Thanks for watching and the question! 🤘

Em friggin LOVES them!! I had Fox on my JK before I traded for a JL. I'm on Falcons now. Honestly, wish I'd stayed with Fox. But, the type of springs you have play a part in mono tube shock choice, too. Still, tho....I would not hesitate to recommend these shocks for your TJ! Thanks for watching, and the question!!

What's wrong with daily driving a TJ? Does this mean Grunt will come out and play? I believe the switch blanks were for the rear wiper and defroster for the hardtop and the overdrive off for an auto transmission.
@ShockWaveOffroad
@ShockWaveOffroad 3 жыл бұрын
Nothing at all wrong with daily driving a TJ, my friend! I just simply meant that given the reliability of Jeeps in general, and the age of a TJ that it's awesome that some people are still using them as a daily. Grunt may come out to play at URE this summer, but places like Windrock are gonna hafta wait until some more significant upgrades are made. I believe you're correct about the switch blanks, but the 2 TJ's and 1 LJ I've owned were all soft tops, so I wasn't sure. Thanks for watching and the comment. Hope to see you soon, buddy!🤘🏻

You'll do better than you think. As far as the Jeep goes, anything with smaller than 35" tires is gonna work for it. At least on 16 and 51.
