Hi Everyone, my name is Vasil. In this Episode I will be replacing the old starter and solenoid for my Johnson 25 HP outboard motor. The old starter and solenoid stopped working due to age and abuse. These are vital components to this engine and need to be in good working order. This engine will be my propulsion device on this boat until I am able to replace the inboard diesel engine.
Just like most boat projects, this one requires some creativity. So join me as I change the damaged components and get this outboard motor running again.
Thank you for watching!

There are many tie points around where you are working. It may be a good idea to tie the dingy to the outboard bracket and at another point so the dingy won't rotate. I learned a lot about the solenoid and starter. Thanks for making this video. Always enjoy watching your work and can't wait for your maiden voyage! Oh yeah, ask for a thumbs up near the beginning of the video. I don't want to forget to do that so I need a reminder. to get that deep bolt into the right spot, you can use a socket extension and the correct socket. Get a strong neodymium magnet and put the magnet into the socket and the bolt will not fall out. You can use the extension to get that bolt back in. I did this while reinstalling bolts in an alternator swap in my Toyota Sienna. They make bolts almost impossible to get back in.

Lots of great advice, thank you! The magnet is a great idea, I’m always nervous about dropping things from that dinghy lol. Good call on the thumbs up, any help with the content is much appreciated. It would be nice if I could tie off to keep that dinghy from rotating, however it’s just too dangerous to use a short rope. If is big wave comes by it would lift the dinghy and then slam it back down really really hard. At times there are waves that lift the stern of the boat 4-5’ and I would be coming along for that journey if it was tied off.

Great idea of taking pictures, could save you hours of figuring. I'm shocked at how inexpensive those parts are. Ok Vasil, doing the mechanical work on an outboard while standing in a dinghy is impressive, I mean seriously. Your outboard must like you because I have found they are as temperamental as the owners, it takes a certain level of patience.

Nice Work. I am surprised that it started without carb work. Do they sell ethanol free gasoline in California? It is available here in NC but expensive. Great video!

Thank you! I’ve been told that some of the boat yards sell ethanol free gas, something to look into. If I do find some, the price will likely be very high like you said. We’re already hovering at $5 a gallon for regular gas here in California.
