Hi everyone! My name is Vasil, and I am restoring my 1974 Columbia 45. In this episode I will be breaking down the costs and logistics of transferring this sailboat from its current location on a mooring ball to a dry dock about 10 miles away. Here is the cost break down:
-cleaning the bottom $400
-haul out $350
-pulling the motor $150
-pulling the mast $300
-transport to dry dock $1700
-first month/last month $1700
-deposit $4500
-unexpected expenses $1000

You can still move your boat with all that fouling on there, you'll just be slower and burn more fuel. From my understanding it's quite easy to pressure wash it off. My boat had been sitting in the years for 6 years and was covered and still sailed and motored very well. I also commented on your outboard videos earlier. I'm in the same boat as you basically. I have a bracket mounted with an outboard on it, a 25hp 2 stroke and my transom doesnt touch the water like your ship. I tested it this weekend and it works great, even in waves. The more throttle you apply, the lower the transom will go into the water. The bow will rise a bit and my transom submerges an inch or so. Kept full throttle on higher waves and prop didnt come out of the water once. If you want I can send you a video of it working and some pictures. Its very similar to your setup.

Hi Jasper, sorry for the late reply. Seems like you got your outboard bracket dialed in! I'll be posting some videos of how my bracket is functioning with the outboard. Good to hear that the boat will still move with all the fouling.

Aaron, the math works out in my favor if you consider rental rates in San Diego. It's now the most expensive city in California. Boat life for the win! I'm staying the course, things just take time... lots and lots of time. lol.

in the same process on the coast of Virginia - - - all those costs are much more expensive there than what we have here ! I pay $130 a month to have my 40 ft boat on the "hard: for diy repairs , to pull / splash $150 . If you could get it to Mexico , Guatemala , etc you could get all done for easily 75% less ! you will need at minimum $150k + to do that boat yourself in So Cal

Those figures are astronomical! I know it's much cheaper in other places around the country/world. I'm just stuck here in San Diego at the moment, it's home base. Lot's of struggles ahead.

I agree with jasper8598, I would save the money on scuba and move the boat first. Clean the hull after you get it out of the water with a pressure washer. If you do it immediately, it should come right off. Sounds like you have allot on your plate. My advice is to prioritize thoughtfully. Good Luck!

I've never heard of anyone removing the fouling on the hull while the boat is still in the water. That's usually only done with ships that are too large to be dry docked. Cruise ships, container ships etc.

You are so right, prioritization is key! Good advice on the pressure washing. Just need to make sure the marine will let me do that when the boat gets hauled out. One marine notified me that the hull needs to be clean before they pull it out, not sure what the rest of the marinas will say about that.

Interested in how things are going hopefully you're still rocking it's probably a way out of your wheelhouse but if you could somehow get to Astoria pulling your boat out would probably be more like 500 and storing a per day would be more like 25 per day

Aaron, I am still rocking. New episode is going to drop in about 2 hours. Other places would certainly be cheaper, but it looks like I'll be stuck here in San Diego for a while, not a bad place to be, just expensive as all hell!

The only reason I would think to take a boat to dry dock is to bottom paint it, or work on through hulls. If you only need to work on the boat other than the hull, you should get a slip for faster repairs. Even mooring like you are should be fine if you like the current pace of repairs. I am going through the same struggle on doing bottom scraping. I had a guy doing it every month, but he has since stopped. It's hard to find someone to do this, so I may need to do it myself. And if I do, it may be a good way t o make some extra coin.

I would love to be able to do all the repairs in the water. However, I think the Columbia is way past that point. I needs a complete rebuild. The keel bolts are my biggest worry with the ballast coming in at 10,300 lbs. That's not a job I can do while it's in the water. Bottom scraping is a complete pain in the butt, especially when the fouling paint has worn off. It builds up SO quickly.
