We are moving along with the Wood Boiler installation and today I need to get this hot water plate heat exchanger installed above our water heater. These plate heat exchangers can be purchased on Amazon or a heating and cooling distributor for under $200. The purpose of this unit is to transfer the heat from the wood boiler to the domestic hot water. It works by using a series of plates to transfer the heat without crossing water streams.
These units work best if installed within 5 or 6 inches from the top of the hot water on the cold water supply side. I prefer to use all solder joints with this install but you can also use PEX or SharkBite connectors as well.

I never got around to installing my mix valve haha. It will scald you. We have young kids and don’t have an issue. It comes in handy getting a head start on anything you are boiling water for tea, spaghetti, scalding chickens, ect.

Oh man. As soon I saw that heat exchanger. I honestly thought you were making beer. I am a homebrewer and we have the same thing but we call it a Wort Plate Chiller. Instead of heating a liquid, we use it to chill down wort or unfermented beer. Also a counter flow chiller might work for you. 😁 just saying.

When putting the tape on the threads, you have the tape coming off the roll, from the top of the roll. (Roll is being held vertically.) If you turn that roll over, so the tape is coming off the bottom of the roll, it is a lot easier to keep the tape tight as you apply it.

Potable water.... So..We love your videos. Please don't hate us. Understand the difference between potable and non-potable. That heat exchanger is way too small. Glad it failed. You should not have potable and non-potable water going through an exchanger which can fail and contaminate your water. Plastic is plastic. If you distrust it, don't drink out of anything plastic. Pex is safe. Love your copper soldering skills. It is cheaper than push to connect. However, don't forget to pay yourself for your time. Keep up the good work! ♥

Order a mixing valve. I went cheap and all you do in the shower is constantly tweak the water from too hot to cold. Remember mama ain’t happy ain’t no one going to be happy.

Nice job! Sorry about the leak. It's after the fact, but a quick & simple way of leak testing the heat exchangers before installation might be to pressure up one side (shell or tube) with an air compressor and attaching balloons to the other side fittings. Any leak would blow up the balloons. Of course you'd need to make up the fittings for this test. Temperature could also affect the leak, so you 'd want to go above the normal operating pressure for the pressure test.. Looking forward to the next vid. Many blessings.

I already saw in the comments section, but thought I would repost. Using a brazed plate heat exchanger on a domestic water application is not a good idea unless you are using a double wall unit. The magic of a double wall unit is if there is a hole in the plate the water will drip between the plates in a cavity (without fluid) and onto the floor so you will know there is a hole in the plate, and the fluids will not mix. Over time the solids in the water will wear through the plates of the single wall unit, the fluids will mix and you won't know. There are a few manufactures who make double wall brazed plates. (Alfa Laval, bell and gossett, etc.) With that being said I would make sure the new one you get is a double wall brazed plate.

Never leave solder in pipes or connections as this will introduce turbulence and the water going by will eventually cut thru the pipe. Also when cutting any pipe you must chamfer the inside to make a smooth transition from one connection to another for the same reason. Pex is the only way to fly as copper is not forever and if joints are improper will leak over time. I have seen copper become less than paper thin and leak from elements in the water causing corrosion. Copper had its heyday but not anymore.

I always have problems with those small cutters. I get them off kilter somehow, and instead of sitting in one place, and cutting, they tend to screw/thread themselves along the pipe. LOL

It's basically all good, and it's going to be okay the leak can sometimes close when it gets hot you could try that, but !!! first take a look at the flue gas outlet make that right, bracket the pipe properly and put it straight on the boiler, this is this way a big risk of carbon monoxide, make this the right way

You run the rick of coolong the water going to the air heater . This will make cold air blow in your home ... A simple solution would be a contact thermostat on the water lone before the air heater, in line with the electrical lone of the fan . When cold woter comes the fan shats down.

It's a preheater so would only be active when the tank is filling. And it won't cool boiler water enough that you'd ever notice from an air heater.

I’m planning to install a wood boiler in my garage and pipe into my basement, about 25 ft, and heat my existing oil fired hot water loop. My garage could by below freezing so I need to use a heat exchanger and run antifreeze in the outdoor loop. Do you know what temperature drop you get Accross your heat exchanger?

When you have the heat exchanger like you do it has to be going into the hot side of the water heater. Is yours ? Also I would of out quick connects on the heat exchanger because those ones will get scale and plug up over time. They have to be removed every other year and cleaned. I just replaced my 3rd one in the 10 years of running. This year it seemed to be going good but I burned 3 taco pumps and I bypassed the heat exchanger and it’s been running flawlessly. Now I am waiting for my side arm heat exchanger to get here and I am switching it out. Good luck on your plate.

if your heat exchanger is leaking on the outside, chances are it could be leaking on the inside causing cross contamination into the domestic water FYI

If the heat exchanger is leaking, there might also be an internal leak, making your wood boiler reservoir overflow.

I check med it under pressure with the boiler lines off for awhile and didn’t see any water inside so I think it is just leaking to the outside. I will replace it soon….

Will you add a circulation pump to the water heater. It seems that exchanger will heat incoming water, but will not heat the water that sits in the tank. Will that just stay as propane and be that necessary loss, thanks for sharing
@SSLFamilyDad
@SSLFamilyDad Жыл бұрын
As long as it is close enough to the tank on the incoming line supposedly there is some convection that happens and circulates the water a bit but the propane can come in to keep it hot if needed
@pre176
@pre176 8 ай бұрын
@@SSLFamilyDad I don't see how that would ever work without a recirc setup. You've only got one tap on the cold line that goes to the bottom of the tank. The hot water sitting in the HX is less dense. There's no way it sinks, and even if it did it's got to coexist in the same pipe as the cold water that needs to come up to replace it.

Speaking of healthy piping, is there Lead in your solder? If so .. you showed how the solder gets into the part where water also flows.... So if you also did that on your drinking water solder joints... ahem. 🙂 "healthy" ?

Be much easier using the copper pipe inside a copper pipe hot water heater attachment like Central Boiler sells or build your own gravity flow system. I made my own instead of buying one.
