A really great and remarkable experiment! Incidentally, I have a high-end Windows 98 SE PC with Core2Duo E8400 with 3 GHz, 1GB DDR2 800, GeForce 7900 GT, 2x Voodoo 2 SLI via ASMedia PCI to PCIe bridge and another SB128 PCI because the sound stuttered or hung on many other cards under 98 the whole P3x, G3x P4x G4x chip sets.... And I only got SLI with Voodoo 2 to run on the PCI bridge, on the native onboard PCI slots Windows 98 with SLI is constantly frozen at system start. But I have to be honest with you, yes, it's great that it's technically possible to get Windows 98 running on such Coffee Lake boards. However, it hardly makes sense because of the graphics cards, because they are the bottleneck in such a powerful system. Even an old core processor of the first generation is mercilessly slowed down by a GeForce 6800 or Radeon X800. Therefore, there should be an urgent need for subsequent Windows 98 drivers for newer cards so that the performance can be increased at all. But thanks for the effort you made, it was really impressive.

For me, Windows 98 on modern systems makes perfect sense in a dual or multi boot set up so you can go back in time... on real hardware. I really like this idea, and on my main computer by using 4 separate cards (a PCI Voodoo 3 as primary video, a PCI to SATA/ IDE, a PCI-E USB 2.0 card and another PCI card for sound) - I can basically boot in any Windows ever made with full functionality. Since a I have room a big RTX card I still can use my PC for gaming, video editing etc.

A dual core cpu for win 98 se makes just as little sense. Windows 98 can only make use of 1 core and 1 thread, just like the games of that time.
@chrisrudi7162
@chrisrudi7162 8 ай бұрын
@@mealot7613 That's why I wouldn't install a 3 GHz Core2Quad and only used the Core2Duo model. Pointless since 98 can't use the four cores. However, the energy requirement and heat generation increase for nothing. Therefore, for modern 98 systems I would always use processors with as few cores as possible or disable them if possible.

I believe Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge at the best platforms to run 98 and XP. They have PCI slots for Windows 98 compatible cards and support XP native.

Yes, socket 1155 it's Windows 9x/XP friendly, mostly because there are free PCI slots. The next gen - Haswell - it's also quite compatible. Even if the PCI support was removed at chipset level, there are many H8x, Z9x boards with PCI slots by using a PCI-E to PCI bridge chip, usually from ASMedia. I have an Asus H81 Gamer with 4 PCI-E and + 3 PCI slots. (tested with Win 98SE)

Now we debunked the myth about PCIe on win9x platforms. 😁 Stay on a lookout for Rasteri's TPM LPC to ISA adapter. I believe intel drop the special signals on the LPC bus after the Haswell/Broadwell chipsets but i believe AMD's bristol ridge and newer may contain the required signals on their platform.

there is severe compatibility problems with win9x and the way QEMU interfaces with KVM PCI Passthrough with alot of hardware, although later versions of windows NT/XP and linux don't have these issues with passing-through said hardware. several have tested this including myself on the winraid & msfn forums.

Nice. I did try installing 9x on some of my systems and some could successfully do so very easily. The ethernet/sound/video is the biggest issue. I have some pci ethernet (8029as) cards so that's not huge, but it's damn hard to get a compatible pci/pci-e gpu / sound card :(
@O_mores
@O_mores Жыл бұрын
Windows 98 it's actually very compatible up to socket 1151 v2 as you can see in this video. Try a PCI-E to PCI adapter and you can get decent sound like Creative Audigy and PCI gigabit cards 100% compatible with 1998. Such an adapter is like 10$ and it's all hardware conversion. For PCI-E video I recommend ATI x700 and X800 series.

How well does this machine play dos games? And does it have any stability problems with games? Would you recommend someone to build a system like this? For Windows 98?
@O_mores
@O_mores Жыл бұрын
Yes, I would recommend to install Windows 98 on a H310 motherboard. Windows games should run perfectly fine. You should avoid a PCI-E only configuration since you can find motherboards with 3 classic PCI slots, like Gigabyte H310 D3. And yes, the system it's stable once you know what hardware and drivers to use... I reinstalled Windows 98 on the same platform without a single BSOD or unnecessary reset. This wasn't the case when I tried for the first time. DOS it's a different story - the biggest issue it's sound, both in pure DOS and in Windows. In pure DOS you simply can't get sound with a PCI sound card using its original drivers. (PCI Aureal Vortex 2 might be an exception) In Windows 98 you may also get into trouble with DOS sound emulation, but in the end should be doable. Somehow, Windows Me it's much better at DOS sound emulation, at least when using Creative drivers. On my main computer (Ryzen 3900x) I can play DOS games inside Windows ME with sound, the DOS setup tools are detecting the sound card, and everything works out of the box...
