Absolutely he would. And he could play any one of the three guitarists part and sound great. Awhile back Tom is the type that don't brag or showoff. But Ed king a few years ago right before he passed he told Tom he was the only one on KZfaq that got it right. As far as picking out all the nuances and little things that was originally in the songs. Ed was also fixing to show Tom and let him hear a original version that Ed wanted on I believe it was the song Saturday night special. But he passed away before he had a chance to show him. That's incredible there's probably a small handful of people that knows this much less ever heard it.

I can’t get either hammer-ons or pull-offs to work without having the gain dialed up… Is that normal, or???

This is NOT a CHEAT or a HACK. it's called "technique." All you kids think EVERYTHING is about "finding a shortcut." A "cheat." Because you don't want to put in the work! But, if you're at the level where you can, and want to play something like this... SURPRISE! You've been playing enough to have developed a technique! Yep. Just keep working at it, and you'll develop more! Next thing ya know, you'll be a skilled player... Just like your grandpa. You CAN do it!

Good advice and great place to start....But beware, MANY players have fallen into the rut of pentatonic triplets with a wah-wah lead sound.....YAWN!!!!....It gets old real fast. OVER relying on hammers and pull's can really limit your dynamic's at high speeds. As far as the pick hand?...I can not recommend Troy Grady's "Cracking The Code"....It will change the way you play and view the right hand picking FOREVER!!!....YES, that good.
